Rochester TV

Mark,

I know nothing about Emily Smith moving to NYC. Although I don't seem to know a whole lot these days. I think people have forgotten that I rely on them to e-mail me tips for the website. I tried e-mailing Emily earlier this week but the e-mail bounced back. Your message was not delivered because the destination computer was not reachable within the allowed queue period. The amount of time a message is queued before it is returned depends on local configura- tion parameters. So who knows what's going on there. I have confirmed Cathy Orosz's departure from WROC and will be adding that to the site shortly.

Emily is going to, from what I heard, WABC in New York. Like I posted earlier I really never watch 10 anymore so I have no idea what kind of reporter Emily is, let alone what she looks like, but I do wish her well. And if the largest market in the U.S. thinks she's good, well then who am I to say anything in the first place?

As for Cathy Orosz, I think most of us in the business (or used to be in the business) figured out a while ago that she was among a list of people targeted for removal by the management over there at the castle on Humboldt Street.

I'm sure 8 can't wait for the arrival of Katie Couric to start as the new anchor of the CBS Evening News in September, figuring that she will give their local newscasts a ratings boost. If they believe that Couric is going to help their local product, then they (the management) are living on Fantasy Island. Sure Couric will generate a bump in the ratings for CBS as people check her out. But eventually those curious viewers will go back to watch either Charlie Gibson or Brian Williams. In the meantime Channel 13, which has a stable news operation, and to a lesser extent 10, will continue to dominate the local ratings.

The problem with the management at 8 is that they can't get it through their thick skulls that the Rochester viewing audience does not like change. And this "revolving door" policy when it comes to on-air talent sure isn't helping matters any.

Who is next to get the ax at 8? I think even money is on Dave McKinley. Why? Maybe because McKinley makes too much money and heaven forbid that the station keeps one of the remaining reporters on staff that has any knowledge of the Rochester market because it might impact their bottom line. Instead of looking 5 years down the road, these people at 8 are looking five minutes into the future.

In my humble opinion the only thing saving Channel 8 is the fact they are a CBS affiliate and CBS right now is riding high in the ratings because of their network programs. I know that years ago CBS officials courted WUHF to drop their FOX affiliation and join their network. But now that Sinclair has given Nexstar carte blanch' in running 31's operation, that won't happen.
