Rock 100.5 - What A Difference A Week Makes

Rock 100.5 is now imaging as "Atlanta's Classic Rock." Some "Atlanta's Rock Station" is still mixed in for now. Last weekend, it was Active Rock.

They might be better off imaging as "Atlanta's Pot Luck Station."

Or rather, "We're Rock 100.5, the Lindsey Lohan of Rock Music on the Radio, we go up and down and still, NO ONE likes us.

Agreed. It sounds like a huge mess.

If they want to survive and refuse to go down the alternative route and getting rid of 99x, they need to become a true classic rock station. They have GOT to set themselves apart from the River so they need to dig deep and play some of the cuts you don't normally hear from classic rock artist. For example, check out this recent playlist from a classic rock station in Chattanooga. This station digs deep in the archives while still playing the best classic rock artist of all times. They get into the woodstock days playing the likes of Joplin, Crosby Steels & Nash and Joe Cocker but they also dive into the 80's hair bands as well. By far the best classic rock station on FM radio in the nation. Just copy and paste the link and spend about 5 minutes looking at these songs. You will get my point.

One more thing: Rock had imaged itself as Atlanta's Classic Rock at times back during the summer and fall. At that time, it was still mixed in with Atlanta's Rock Station. I don't think they want to get rid of Atlanta's rock station due to their website name being www.atlantasrockstation.com. Well, just a thought anyway.

It almost sounds like the folks at the station are in panic mode trying to get something to work before they flip the station and everyone gets sacked. IIRC their last experiment with classic rock resulted in these recent bad books.

Wow, really? I find it to be boring. I spend more time on it than any of the other awful "rock" stations in Chattanooga but very often find myself tuning away to try to find something else, usually without any success. I wind up back on KZ106 wishing there was something better in this town.

With regards to classic rock, check any other station out in that genre and it would be hard to find a station that plays as much of a variety as KZ 106. They dig deep with some of their songs. I have yet to find a classic rock station that would actually play Uriah Heep. KZ 106 does.

They need to STOP. Their underperformance was relatively quiet and unheralded prior to now, but in just a matter of weeks they've transformed into a laughingstock.

According to Rodney, John Dickey called last weekend's active rock experiment "guerrilla marketing" intended to gain buzz and tweak Project. Let me get this straight. You're going to "gain [listener] buzz" by completely changing the rock skew (for the 1743rd time since the station's inception) for two days on the market's lowest cuming English FM signal? How does that work, exactly? And that's not to mention the whopping three-day foray into music with the Regular Guys. I bet their Jaunary Week 4 PPM numbers are going to be FRIGHTENING.

Rock 100.5 is a debacle. Case closed, end of discussion. They've been flying by the seat of their pants from day one and as a result, their only recourse now is to blow the damn thing up.

Uriah Heep is good stuff. Have it in my collection, but rarely hear it on radio.

I don't get it - they already tried Classic Rock, and it gave them a share around 1.8 - it can't compete with The River

A lot of markets now have two Hot ACs, and two CHRs, so straight ratings-wise those would be the two safest options for 100.5 - but since Q100 is a CHR which leans Hot AC, I guess neither one is an option for Cumulus

Soft AC or Adult Hits (As Jack or Bob or Mike or John.......)

I think their weak signal really hurts. Yeah, not much that can be done but it's just not quality out in the suburbs. It really doesn't sound that great ITP either.

Ehhh...back when Q100 was on 100.5 it scored at least a 4.0 share - I don't think the signal has much to do with it

People think there's something wrong with that signal, but there's not. Compared to the 100,000 watters, it looks weak on paper, but it's good virtually everywhere it needs to be.

How in the world does The River have higher ratings than any other station playing rock music? Good gawd. I feel sorry for anyone who is stuck listening to that station every day, all day long (like at work). It would be as bad as stuck hearing Christmas music all the time. The repetition is terrible.

If anyone is interested, my blog this week discusses this subject in depth: http://atlairwaves.blogspot.com/

I really likes the column, but what are your suggestions for what 100.5 should go to?
My personal suggestion: Music too hard or too new for River and too old or too soft for Project. There HAS to be some kind of niche there.
