If anyone is interested, my blog this week discusses this subject in depth: http://atlairwaves.blogspot.com/

I really likes the column, but what are your suggestions for what 100.5 should go to?
My personal suggestion: Music too hard or too new for River and too old or too soft for Project. There HAS to be some kind of niche there.

I feel like they've already tried this though, and it gave them a share less than 2.0

Now they seem to be in a death match (again) with River to see who can play the most Led Zeppelin and Rush. It's Z93 vs. 96 Rock all over again!

I guess the real-time PPM data for newer/active rock wasn't favorable vs. Project, and they don't want to try and fill the gap between River and Project (for whatever reason), so we're back to going mano a mano with River. How many markets have 2 classic rock stations?

IMO River is vulnerable with their thin playlist, but Rock 100.5 doesn't seem to be trying to go deep. Maybe a little harder, but River keeps getting harder themselves. River is now playing the album (uncensored) version of "Walk On The Wild Side" as well as Whitesnake. Rock100.5 is also playing a lot of old Who and Stones, which River is dabbling with.

Is Cumulus just mailing it in until catchers and pitchers report and they can put 680 on 100.5? What other formats would work on that station (with or without TRG). IMNSHO Journey would work on 100.5 (but not with TRG). No, 99X would NOT. Soft AC? Soft AC would enable Q100 to go more full CHR.

Now here's an idea: What if Cumulus took a page from CC's playbook and turned 680/100.5 into something like Houston's The 9-5-0 Radio Mojo (KPRC)? TRG in the AM, bring back the Rude Ride Home, but with sportstalk in the other dayparts instead of political talk? Make it a men's station.

Alternatively, keep 680 and 100.5 separate and do the man-talk thing on 100.5 only...and put Huckabee on 12-3. Heck, see if you can get the Kimmer to come out of retirement for PM drive.

Huh? ??? Soft AC has nothing to do with CHR - it targets people in their 50s
It would reduce the pressure on Q100 to include so much Hot AC programming to try to be everything to all people. If the objective is to take listeners from Star and B98.5, divide and conquer.

I think Soft AC is mostly 70s/80s ballads - if you look up the one in Miami on AllAccess, it basically has no currents/recurrents

Anyhow, it basically only works where there are a lot of retirees, so I really don't think it's an option

I don't think Lite or Bull has ever gotten the numbers soft AC Peach 94.9 had.

But wasn't that 10 years ago, when soft music tested well with people that were in their 40s back then?

IIRC The Peach was plucked before PPM started, and the Lite was turned off around the time PPM started. I am sure someone has the exact dates of all three. I can only guess the "branding" of Peach was too old for CC to sell. The 6+ ratings do not count in most of the agency buys. The "older" demos are not as attractive as the younger demo's. From CC's viewpoint which billed (s) best Lite or Bull? You will notice CC kept the WPCH calls.

You are correct. Peach's numbers had been too old, and the station first tried the "Today's Peach 94-9" positioning. Later, CC played music for focus groups and asked the participants to name a station they would hear the song on. When a younger song was played, the participants would say B98.5, even though Peach also played it. When they played an older song, people would say Peach.

That led to Lite FM, although in truth CC AC's all over the country were moving to that branding.

My point was the viability of soft AC in general, not Peach's branding. People are still getting old, last time I checked.
