Rock 103 Mornings...

I was in Memphis yesterday for a while. I had CD's going and forgot to listen around.
I did, however, see a billboard for Rock 103. The focus was "Mornings with Tim and Bad Dog," and it featured a picture of just the two of them. It was weird to see that, and it made me wonder a couple of things.

How does the show sound without Bev? (My fault I haven't heard it-what with all the working in the morning)
How do FM100 mornings sound without Steve? I guess less Steve just means more Ron (shudder!)
How noticeable are the departures? Not to people in and from the business...but to the general public?

When I do listen to the radio in the mornings, I listen to Rock 92.3 out of Jackson. They've recently dumped John Boy and Billy and are currently running just liners with live news and weather a couple of times an hour.
I hate to admit it...but I kind of like it.
No jocks tryin' to be clever and funny.
The news and such is somebody from the group's newstation, and he just does his deal and lets the rock roll.
No stupid call ins, no time and temp pukers, and traffic as necessary within the news.
You can get a little Zepplin and AC/DC on the way to work in the morning without having to listen to a morning "zoo" tryin' to be the next Dees.
I know it won't last like this...but I'll enjoy it while it does.

I don't get to listen much anymore since I'm back in Atlanta now, but I've gotten to listen to my fair share of Tim and Bad Dog since everything went down. They sound fine together, but you could tell that they felt awkward for a while, and rightfully so. It was a different sound than whenever Bev was just on vacation. Hell, they've all been on the same show together since 1988. What's hard for me as a former co-worker of theirs and a LONG TIME listener, is when Tim or John make a wisecrack and you know exactly what Bev would say, you wait for it, and it's not there.

Haven't heard the FM 100 morning show since Steve left.

Part of me is glad I'm leaving this business. Part of me will always want to go back. :(

It sounds like Tim and Dog are adjusting much better than Ron and Karen.

I saw Steve a couple of weeks ago. He's looking at some offers, but it didn't sound like he was in much of a hurry to jump back into radio.

Yeah, I know what you mean.... I wondered how long it would take for Spencer to slip up after so many "This is Tim n Beeeaaaad Dog" but it finally happened last week - he said "this is Tim, Bev and Bad Dog" and after a brief second of stunning silence, his voice cracked just a bit on the next line. It's gotta be hard.

Seems to me, their first "slip up" was letting her go. Yeah, they'll adjust, but it will be like your wife making your Momma's soup...it's good, but there ain't enough spice! ;D

I gotta wonder if they'll take a ratings hit for this, and if so will the suits recognize they made a mistake? And if so will they try to correct it?

Naw...even when they've made horrible mistakes, they never admit it and keep moving.
The minor suits who screwed it up don't admit it.
The major suits who let the minor suits make the move don't acknowledge it.
They never go back and fix it.
It's similar to the "Code Red" or whatever it was in "A Few Good Men".
Besides, as we all know, to them, the on-air talent is probably their easiest-to-replace resource.
There is almost always someone who will do the same job for less money.(Regardless of their talent level)

Awww man...how can one not know who the Wes Man is?

Wes trained me on the automation system and the board when I came on part time back in December of 2005 and showed me the ropes around there. Helluva good guy.

Wes, I enjoyed working with you brother and I hope you land a good gig soon.

Thanks MC, ditto that. I'm still counting down the days, working a part ime non-radio job to stretch the cash, and developing a sad habit of World of Warcraft. Still kicking!

Wes dude, kick the WoW habit now - move to DAoC - at least there you can kill other people. I often put the faces of folks I work with, like sales people, insufferable jocks and the random client who doesn't know what the hell he wants in a commercial on the faces of enemy toons. Makes it much more ejoyable when I blow 'em away.

It's a lot more ... fun that way.

;D
