rock 103 to flip

Yeah. I was not a huge fan of D&Z when they were on 103. They seemed to trade on lowest common denominator stuff.

But when they moved to 98.1, they broadened their act. The book stuff shows that they actually have depth as individuals. They discuss politics and local issues, yet manage to do it with a bit of an attitude. And, the numbers reflect it.

The show still really isn't my cup of tea. But I get that it is, indeed, a good show. In this World of homogenized satellite shows and lazy disk jockeys who do show prep by reading celebrity gossip, I respect what they do. They should be congratulated.

It certainly does reflect their success. D&Z are #1 25-54 Adults, #1 Men 25-54 Men! The only other morning show close to them is in their own building. WGKX Duanne and Abby are #2 Adults 25-54 and #2 Men 25-54 and one of the sales people told me they are #1 non-ethnic Women 25-54. D&Z are totally my fav show.

D & Z are winning by default. Its like being the tallest midget in the room. I hope for D & Z's sake Cummulus doesn't mess around with the station. Remember they have some high priced people in other markets like Imus that they could quickly subsitute for a highly paid local morning show

Molly, how do you grow by 4400 listeners in three months and say it's by 'default'? Every single listener could have abandoned the morning show on Rock 103, and it would only account for 1/4 of the growth. D&Z have attracted a solid following because they are live, local, interesting, topical, and still somewhat irreverent. If you put a bad show on the air, and there's 'nothing else to listen to' then people go back to iPods and CD's. Show me another morning show that's up over 91% in their prime demo anywhere in the country...you don't gain that much because you are a 'default' station.

Dear Radioguy. D & Z are good...not great and I still contend win out of default. Rock 103 hasn't had a listenerable morning show for all of 2011. From the last book I saw most of D&Z's growth was in AQH not cume. Even with their great 8.2 share WXMX had in Aug...their cume is down from June..so their growth is driven by a strong TSL. People are listening longer because they have no where to go. As good and loved as Bad Dog was, god rest his soul, he did most of 2010 from the hospital bed. He and Rick tried but they sounded disjointed. D & Z have no competition in the market. Maybe the new OM at Clear Channel will have some influence to develop a real morning show. Until then D & Z will win out of default.

Molly, when the AQH growth didn't come from Rock 103, and was steady, it shows that D&Z had a massive audience gain...maybe it was from the TSL...which is up to about an hour a day now. As for share, in the prime demo of M 25-54, it's a 25.7 in August....one of the highest in the nation, let alone tops in Memphis. No one sells off cume...AQH drives ratings, and that's where the bucks come from. Granted, they have no real competition now, but the success is not just due to Rock 103's demise. If D&Z are up 4,400 men 25-54, and Rock 103 is down 900, October to August, where did the other 3500 come from? I hope the new OM is given some leway in what she does....best of luck on that.
