Rock 104.5 is retiring

Originally starting out as Easy Listening WJNJ-FM 104.9 in the late 1960s, WFYV has been on the air, first as Rock 105, for over 33-years after taking vacant 104.5 "C" from Saint Augustine and replacing 104.9 "A" Atlantic Beach with 104.5 "C". In Saint Augustine, 105.5 "A" was substituted to replace 104.5 "C".
 
I was looking in David Eduardo's Broadcasting Yearbook site & was looking through the FM Table of Allotments. I never saw a 283C for St. Augustine but did see it for Atlantic Beach circa 1976, about the same time 288A was allocated to S.A..

Most markets don't have an AOR anymore. AOR is a format that's been evolving itself out of existence for at least the last 20 years. Most of the heritage AOR's that are still around have either gone classic rock or active rock and resemble the stations they used to be in name and, in some cases, talent only. The majority of those that haven't chosen one path of the other have gotten squeezed by other stations taking the classic rock and active rock formats until they've been forced out of the format.

The 104.5 "C" allocation was moved from Saint Augustine to Atlantic Beach to replace 104.9 "A" sometime ago. However, it wasn't until 1980 that the former WJNJ-FM upgraded its facilities to the new class C frequency on 104.5 and changed its call letters to WFYV (FYV sounds like five as in Rock 105). This was a drop-in frequency same as 99.9 "C" was identified and originally dropped-in as Palatka's first FM service in the late 1960s; having gone on the air in 1973 initially as WWPF-FM, later becoming WIYD. 104.5 "C" was originally assigned to Saint Augustine as that community's second FM service, although it never went on the air in Saint Augustine, with WFOY-FM 97.7 "A" being the first.
 
This is where I'm finding something else (I enjoy your insights & war stories so it's not criticism, I'm just trying to figure out the events): the 1975 Broadcasting Yearbook shows 285A in Atlantic Beach & only 249A in St. Augustine. The 1976 edition shows 283 in Jacksonville (which it wasn't the year before), nothing in Atlantic Beach & 288A in St. Augustine. So, that's where it gets confusing. The Broadcasting Yearbook shows nothing for St. Augustine on 283 in the 1975-76 timeframe. Granted, it's an annual so it may have existed for a short while in 1975 but I haven't found the documentation yet. It wouldn't be the 1st time St. Augustine was screwed out of an allotment (it had Channel 25 in 1952) nor the last.

Philadelphia must be an exception then. They have an alturnative and classic rocker. they dont have any active rock, and AAA WXPN is very eclective so I dont believe WXPn is a true AAAA.
 
AAA is highly custom to the market, and a more eclectic format by nature.

I think WXPN's longevity and listener support base, along with the talent they bring to Philadelphia, would back up the assertion that it is, in fact, a "true AAA" for a noncommercial station in Philadelphia.
 
I hope Rock 104-5 will be taking it EASY... Just that Miami Station or to become a Dove clove. I'm feeling so Barry Manilow right now.

A recent domain registration of Easy1045.com was made. The question now: Is Cox going to go EASY or POWER it up on 104.5?

The more I have been thinking about this the more it seems Power would be better situated to stay at 106.1 because it is doing what it was designed to do....attract listeners from the urban core of Jacksonville. Why mess it up? The Soft AC/Oldies hybrid like WDUV and Easy 93.1 would be perfect and allow Cox to take on WEJZ. Just my two cents.
 
@JAWilson, I was just about to say the same thing about the domain registration. I believe they will leave Power where it is, they have put a lot of promotional cash into that brand, besides, why confuse and lose some listeners?

I think that they are going the EASY route and go after 96.1 as well.

Your two cents may prove to be right.
 
When I first heard Easy 93.1, I just knew Cox had developed a winner. Even though this is the N. Fla board, I posted dozens of stories about WFEZ and their approach over the last couple years. I often mentioned Easy 93.1 would probably serve as a prototype for the format in other markets. Today, I listen to Easy 93.1 more than I do any other station. It’s just that good and I’m very fussy.

Cox has a proven track record in launching new formats flawlessly. I have really enjoyed witnessing the evolution of WFEZ. Cox has another AC in the market that has gotten so hot/contemporary that they are practically a CHR today. The Coast - WFLC) I can envision that same strategy in Jax where Easy would be the older sister to WAPE. Woman have been long underserved in Jax. I truly believe Easy could/will be a great addition to the Cox cluster. An Easy format would not negatively impact anything else.

Super serving of a format always sees a station or two eventually falling by the wayside. While it’s normal to question certain decisions, there is no doubt Cox and local management gave Rock 104-5 many opportunities to succeed. Jacksonville simply has way too many rock formats and so the handwriting was just on the wall. It's another reason I believe there is demand for soft and easy favorites.

Other stations and formats have not been as fortunate as rock on 104-5 has been. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again. If key management does not truly love or sees potential in a format, if they don’t truly support it, success will be illusive. Todd Shannon has impressive radio credentials and proven results. I just hope he’s absolutely committed to the success of an Easy 104-5. Bias and personal feelings have no place in radio decisions. That has been the norm here for a long time. It should be about listener demand. It's been a very tough and depressing past radio year in Jacksonville. It's a year and a few days Magic 107-3 went away.For many listeners, there isn't a music station they truly can call their own. Hopefully, that is about to change.

I can just hear it now “All your favorite songs have moved up the dial to Easy 104-5 – Refreshing and Relaxing Music. Ahh! :) ;)
 
Wow, we used to listen to this while in Gainesville, ahh the memories.!

Jacksonville has so many formats, what to pick from? How about WAAP Classic Hits (in tribute to the old AM WAPE)

It won't be Easy and it won't be Power. Tipping your hat with web domains is not something that Cox generally does.
I think there is a hole for lite ac (or easy) but if it's anything like the Dove in Tampa, it's not a 25-54 winner. If it was me,
I'd put OKV on the big stick and do that Easy thing on 106.5...or urban ac...or young country...or surprise, Rock 106.5

On the other end, I would not be shocked to see the return of Planet Radio to CC...or at least some type of rock format, ala 98ROCK in Tampa. Rock goes away...the hole is open because X would have to shift a ton and piss off their core to cover the lane. Pretty sure Klinger is ready for a move back to Jax...
