Rock 104.5 is retiring

I think the purpose of the loop is not so much to get the attention of "ooooh what's it gonna be...." but instead to really hammer home to all the Jacksonville rock radio listeners to move to 102.9. But I agree, they could do a whole lot better and keep it entertaining as was the case in Boston recently with 96.9 WTKK.

Funny that we, as radio people, are more forgiving when it comes to programming. I'm sure folks in Jax are sick & tired of the stunting already and are getting to the point of not caring what the new format is.

I agree that driving Jacksonville rock listeners to WXXJ is one of the prime objectives in continuously running this particular radio stunt loop; however, any former Rock 104.5 listeners who have not figured out by now that rock is gone from 104.5 will certainly make that discovery once they tune in to WFYV and find the new format in place of the former mainstream rock. As for WXXJ being Jacksonville's "replacement" rock station, I'm quite certain anyone interested already knows about X 102.9 and what it has to offer.

Just talk to someone who said to expect this to go on until at least Wednesday....however don't be surprise if this goes until Friday afternoon. I can see things better now after the talk because killing off a heritage station and having to replace it you need to draw some kind of attention to the fact something new is coming to 104.5

The same thing happened in 1986 when former religious WRYO 98.5 Crystal River, Florida became adult contemporary WKTK Crystal River - Gainesville - Ocala. Religion was dropped at midnight Easter Sunday and was replaced with ocean waves with teasers inserted every few minutes. The new format debuted at 6:00 AM the following Thursday morning, so in the case of WKTK, the wave stunt went on for three full days and part of the forth day.

Normally when a station is stunting, the teasers become more creative every few hours, oftentimes adding clearer hints of the new format the longer the stunt is in progress.

The most wasted use of airwaves I have heard....if they want to continue stunting I say freshen it up for goodness sakes.

MESSAGE TO COX....WE GET IT! Rock 104.5 is retired and you want rock folks to go to X102.9.....if people don't get it at this point then its their fault. Get the gravy train moving and show us what you have hiding behind Curtain #1. We just want the radio dial in Jacksonville to be fun again!

I agree that this once exciting stunt on 104.5 is getting very old fast and is becoming annoying and boring but I don't believe the permanent new format will not debut until either May 1 or Monday May 6. As for the new format, there are only two logical choices, which is "Easy 104.5", a Soft AC/Oldies format that will directly challenge WEJZ "Lite 96.1" as Jacksonville's official "at work" station, or "Power 104.5", a Hip-Hop format that is currently on the 225 watt translator 106.1 but has been very successful in knocking down the heritage, 100kW "93.3 The Beat" owned by rival Clear Channel. As in these situations, it is unknown what the final outcome but it will be interesting once the dust settles and it is clear what the new format will be permanently.

In other news:

Mark Sanchez threw a going-away party for Tim Tebow, but it was intercepted and run back for a touchdown.

Sorry. Just something to break the monotony of the too-long stunting.

Carry on.

Cox did similar stunting in Louisville a few years back when they flipped WRKA from Oldies to New Country. They ran a loop of several different formats. Most everyone in the market had them pegged for News/Talk. Sure enough it seemed that they came out of the stunt with a News/Talk station. Only thing is, they used talent from WHIO. Shortly thereafter, they flipped to New Country.

I look for a similar stunt with WFYV.

Why not 60's-80's Oldies? why is noone entertaining this idea? Isn't it a format that isn't served by anybody in the jacks markit "
