ROCK 104 and LEX & TERRY

radiobum said:
Why would the only Active rock station in the market want to compete with already existing CHR or sports stations? Adult Alternative would be a natural fit (well maybe I'm prejudiced since that's what I'd like to hear ) but I'm not holding my breath.

If Rock 104 drops Lex and Terry I'm guessing it'll take WNDD about a half a second to pick them up.

Active Rock (demo: young guys) is a much tougher sell than CHR (demo: young women). Once you get past the beers, bars, strip clubs & auto parts stores, no advertiser wants young guys. Young women are the shoppers--they spend the money. Young guys shop only when there is a gun to their head.

Adult Alternative would be a hit in Gainesville, but not so much in Ocala. It would be a good move for 105.3 if they get blown out of the CHR world.

L&T have been losing affiliates right and left. "Wind" is doing fine with its current lineup, without all the hassle that comes with Lex & Terry. Hard to imagine them jumping into all that baggage if there is no compelling reason. Hell, they'd pick up two or three shares anyway, if Rock 104 bails out of rock. And even if they don't, they're already getting first-place money on every M25-54 buy that comes along.

If Rock104 were to flip formats, the only other format they would do would be FM sports.

Anything else would be a difficult launch.

Besides, Gator Football on a CHR???

a gator football game last only a few hours. why does anyone believe that would sustain a station's ratings the rest of the week ?!

Most formats are hard to sell without numbers...whether it's CHR or Active Rock. Sports is generally the exception.

Here in Tampa, 98ROCK went through a lull but has rebounded in PPM - they are rolling 25-54 persons and males. Active Rock's cell strength is usually 25-34 males...if you dominate there, it can drive your 18-49s and 25-54s in persons. Rock 104 has been in the format for a long time, which means that they have obviously sold more than beers, bars, and auto parts. Car dealers, home improvement, insurance, jewelry, etc are other advertisers for male formats. I have no idea how 104 is performing there but I would imagine that the FM and AM are being combo sold though.

I've always felt a full market CHR or better yet, Hot AC, would do very well. Hot AC is a friendly buy and if it's hip and not hip hop, could kill. Successful CHRs tend to be a bit more rhythmic - not the best buy unless they have a mainstream morning show to pull it back together. It's easier to jock on a rock station than a CHR - imagine the pain of the young RUFers trying to nail the post. I know I couldn't have done it when I worked at Rock 104.

When Entercom bought WRRX, I thought for sure they would take it CHR on the new signal (they moved from 977 to 973). I didn't think SKY would do well but boy was I wrong. Maybe it thrives because it's a full market signal but it proved me wrong.

Nobody carried Limbaugh in Gainesville so the opening was there for WSKY plus after stumbling for awhile ( i.e. carrying Dr. Dean Edell in afternoon drive ) they added local talk shows that people liked in AM and PM drive.

Imagine a young RUF'er knowing what the phrase "nail the post" means.

Can you imagine how bad most of those college kids would likely sound on a CHR ?! I would be surprised if there are any college-run CHR stations--even commerical ones--anywhere.

I recall hearing the old story that Kris Erik Stevens was 18 when he hit the air at The Big 89/WLS. Personal friends of mine were 20-ish when they arrived at Chicago's WCFL & Buffalo's WKBW during their CHR days. How old were you?

With a pool of 50,000 students to work with, chances are there will always be three or four people talented enough to, uh, "not suck" in a market the size of G-O (not New York or LA, BTW), in other words, talented enough to work across town in CHR, if they chose to do so.

What it would really take is an outstanding, experienced OM/PD with excellent teaching & mentoring skills... and organizational skills. Besides--to think outside the proverbial box for a moment--students don't absolutely have to fill the jock slots. Hire pro jocks and have the kids in the roles of producers... news/sports/weather...

Or maybe ALL the shifts are filled with professional ATs + a huge, revolving cast of students. A 24/7 on-air "party."

Lot of ways to play the game...

Or just keep it the way it is and pretend you're still in the eighties.

You hit a nerve with three ugly letters, C H R! The term CHR was first penned by Bob Wilson at Radio and Records, circa '81, to make them look more "relevant" than Billboard, who called it "gasp" Top 40." 'LS was pure Top 40 baby, back when we were proud of the term. All Hits All the Time! Top 40 became CHR about the time we let Album Rock Stations claim the "Rock" brand that Top 40 had owned since the late 50s. They didn't call WLS the Rock of Chicago for nothin'! I'm a Bucks and especially Rays fan now, but I was in the Mid Western Top 40 Trenches then! Long live the Big 89! Sorry, if this post digressed, it was intentional!
