Rock 104 Flipping?

I'll bring the beer.

Bring several kegs. I'll need it to wash down all the crow I may be eating if this turns out to be the most ingenuous and innovative move in radio history.

You're not quite on target, yet. However, you do bring up a few very viable ideas well worth consideration.

Two guesses:

1)that they think they can pick up where WYGC left off (not realizing in the long years since then, listeners have probably adjusted habits towards WOGK that will not change now, and that there was a reason WYGC left the format in the first place).

2)The "moral crusaders" again higher up at the University level not wanting a station with what they perceive to be 'dirty lyrics'.

They would also have to sound as good as WYGC. WYGC was a VERY well-programmed radio station. Despite their mere 3,000 watts (which did not reach Ocala adequately), they sounded much bigger than they were. I worked at WTRS during the early 1990s and "GC-101" was simply a better radio station, hands down.

Nancy Keeney, where are you? UF needs to hire you as PD!

Just what the Gainesville-Ocala market needs......another country station. Lovely.

Harry Guscott is a nice guy, and has done a good job, but he was lucky in a way. HE HAD TENURE.
Which is really unheard of in radio. Who else has worked at the same place for 39 years? There probably are a few others though.

Guscott did the AM Sunday night oldies show (and was great at it) when I was a student. I worked at WRUF-FM also. My highlights there were doing the Studio 104 Disco show and broadcasting live while a tornado went through town. Both stations have had many tweeks and format trials over the years.
Some lasted longer than others.

Tenure is a good thing. Most kids these days don't know the word nor will ever experience it. Harry was a GREAT guy, congrats on a steller career. He gave an 18 year old kid a break like me and let me pull an overnighter. Still have the original air check cassette. Cut my teeth at Rock 104. Lot's of great people in radio owe their start to Mr. Guscott. Bob Leach on the other hand........

I remember Rich Fields doing PM drive. He's now the voice on "The Price is Right". Many owe their success to their humble beginnings at Rock 104....

Rock 104 is an institution, why do you guys need 10,000 country stations is beyond me. Were saturated with them too. I remember listening to rock 104 when we were at gainesville

If we get too many country stations, I think they will (eventually) lose money.

V A R I E T Y is the spice of life!! Especially on the FM dial.

The decision to flip Rock 104 to country was not mine. In fact, I was against it all along as most everyone else who knows anything about it. You cannot re-buiild 28 1/2 years of heritage and branding in a year's time. I'm sure the decision makers at UF felt they made the correct decision based on whatever information was made available to them in support of having a third market country outlet. If WRUF-FM remains with Country, expect someone in the market to flip to active rock very soon.

Lower Alabama has gone country.. look at them boots it's gone country.. WHWY.. (goodbye sports on 98.1) in Alan Jackson's voice

Were flooded with country stations here. As you know, we lost our 98KW sports radio to it. It's good, If you guys lose rock 104, I think that will put a huge dent in the GVILLE market.

Hell, we don't even have a true classic rock station here.

Everyone has "Gone Country".

Would be really curious to see national/regional/local numbers on what a country format does especially after a heritage station flips to country.

It actually varies from market-to-market. However, overall country does well across the board in all markets although not always number one in each market. I have often wondered why there is no local country station in New York. For years New York had country formatted WHN-AM 1050 and later country formatted WYNY-FM 97.1 then WYNY-FM 103.5. New York is also missing any meaningful local talk radio.

As for country in the Gainesville-Ocala market, it obviously does very well as we can clearly see with WOGK's impressive double digit numbers. However, normally any market only has one, and not more than two, local country radio station(s). Tampa Bay has two with heritage WQYK 99.5 and relative newcomer WFUS 103.5. Orlando has one with WWKA 92.3, and these are much larger markets than Gainesville - Ocala. Only time will tell for sure just how well country performs for WRUF-FM.

Jacksonville has two excellent country stations. There seem to plenty in South Florida as well. Rumor has it Orlando is getting another country. It sells well and many find the music less offensive and "safe."
