Rock 104 Flipping?

The problem with three country stations in a market the size of Gainesville-Ocala is the "country pie" is only so large, and with each new entrant, the pie gets sliced even thinner till it isn't profitable for anyone.

Rumor has it Orlando is getting another country.

Do you care to share which Orlando station is rumored to flip to country? I've said all along Orlando has room for a second country outlet... Who gets "blown-up"?

WHTQ, but would Cox want two countrys?

Interestingly WHTQ was country as WHOO-FM just before becoming AOR WHTQ in 1987. I believe WHTQ is prime for a format change, but as I had suggested on the Orlando Board sometime ago, I believe moving WPYO to the 96.5 frequency would be a better option while taking the vacated WPYO 95.3 dial position to simulcast news-talk WDBO-AM. Ideally Orlando's second country outlet is WPCV provided Hall Communcations started marketing 97 Country to Orlando and Central Florida. Right now that 100kw blowtorch is basically a Polk County local country station.

If WHTQ were to flip to country, who would pick up classic hits in Orlando?

Regarding WPCV, they own the area between Orlando and Tampa. They certainly have a very strong presence in the areas around Disney, but they are considerably weaker in the northern part of the metro. Areas around Altamonte and Sanford are fine in a car, but sketchy on a portable radio or clock radio. That, and the fact that they don't reach the beaches, keeps them from being a true Orlando station. If they wanted to make a try for being a local Orlando station, they could invest in a new tower. Presently, their antenna is 310 meters , but they could go up to 450 meters as a C0, which would improve city grade Orlando coverage by about 20% and that's quite significant.

actually there's four country stations when you count wdvh am/fm which at least does real well in gilchrist county

You're right, of course--and they're holding down 15th place with a 1.8 at the moment... about 1.7 more than The Big 103.7.

So that's three established Country stumbling blocks in their way. Versus no Active Rockers (and FWIW, no full-market CHR signals, either).

And that's the kind of strategery they're teaching nowadays at the UF College of Journ & Comm.

Makes you want to send your kids there, don't it?

Last book, WRUF-FM had a weekly cume of 69,000 12+.

Let's divide that by 4 (we'll assume an equal number go to Buzz, Wind and the new Gator Country and the rest is divided amongst the rest of the market) That means another 17,250 listeners for Buzz and Wind. If that's not the best news those 2 rockers have heard all day-- I dunno what is.

"If WHTQ were to flip to country, who would pick up classic hits in Orlando?"

That's difficult to say right now; possibly WOCL as this would be an easy transition from classic hits without skipping a beat.

Absoulutely! There's no doubt WPCV is number one in their own back yard. It has the best signal of any station in that area. WPCV also always pulls at least a 1.2 share (Adults 12+) in Metro Orlando and double digits in the Lakeland-Winter Haven book every rating period, and that is with no marketing, promotional nor sales efforts in Orlando. Imagine what 97 Country might do if it targets Metro Orlando in addition to what it already has.

I also believe Hall Communcations had looked into raising its tower a few years ago, but the problem was finding a new TL that met local zoning requirements while also passing FAA muster. The present tower near Haines City is at maximum FAA authorized height, possibly due to nearby Orlando International (MCO) in South Orlando, near Kissimmee.

Has anyone listened to the online version of Rock 104? Curious to see how it sounds.

So, because I live in Ocala, I have to hope the breeze is blowing just right to hear a real rocker like 98 Rock or WJRR?

OMG, I'm moving to Bushnell so I can pick up 102.5, 101.1, 97.1, 97.9. Lord knows we don't need another country station in Ocala or Gainesville.

All the Ocala/Gainesville FMs are flipping to country, including all the non-coms.
