Rock 92 Tower Lights Malfunctioning?

Has anybody noticed how bright the WKRR (Rock 92) tower lights are at night? The tower is located just west of the first Randleman exit on Highway 220 S of Greensboro (35 49' 59.02" N 79 50' 2.00" W). The WFMY-TV tower lights look awfully dim when compared to the Rock 92 lights. To me it looks like the strobes on the Rock 92 tower are on day mode. Has anybody else noticed?

I'm available for a price...1st Phone..General/Radar endorsement

At least they are on. I went by the Pappas tower, which is not far from KRR, at sundown today and there were no lights. What's up with that. Pappas tower is the one with the candle opera at the top.... right?

As long as the owner of the tower has reported the problems with the tower lights to the FAA, they are in the clear. I think they have only just a few weeks to make repairs, and once repairs are made, this must report back to the FAA. Remember, any tower under 200 feet does not require lighting, but there are a few exceptions where the tower was too close to a local airport, and the tower under 200 foot had to have lights on it.

You get a nice view of all the towers down 220 as you head south on the Western Urban Loop approaching Bus 85 at Groometown Rd. You have Rock 92's white flashes and there is another tower that has bright red lights flashing. Quite a sight at 4:30 in the morning!!

The Rock 92 management says the lights are operating normally. I wouldn't think they have notified the FAA if they believe they are in compliance. This problem has existed since August. I believe the tower referred to as the "Pappas" tower is owned by American Tower Co. It has strobes on during the day and is hard to see at dusk. At night it has the old fashion "Red" lighting. It appears to be operating normally. I think the tower Mr. Chen is referring to is the new Channel 8 digital tower which is right beside their old analog stick. There are at least 7 towers 1000+ ft operating within 8 - 10 miles of the area in question and the Rock 92 is the only one with lights that aren't operating properly. At night when you are 5 miles away, you can tell when the lights flash when you look in the opposite direction. To me that's too bright. Its also good to know others have observed the problem with the lighting.

Pappas tower is actually owned by American Tower Corp. It was going to be a 8/20/48 co-ownership deal, then Fox bought WGHP 8 and they don't share towers.

The ATC Light Monitors are in the ATC building (48 a/d, 45 d and 61 d and a lot of empty space). It's remotely monitored by ATC's network.

It would be interesting if there was some EASY way to see if lights have been reported out. Right now, you have to call the FAA to get updates. Online would be faster and cheaper.

While I was with Pappas, the lights rarely worked correctly more than a few months at a time. Night Time Side lights burned out, beacons burned out. The Day-Time Strobes seemed to work reliably. It was a FLASH install. Flash switched owners several times over and they also had trouble keeping good guys in the field.

I was down 220 the other week and I am pretty sure it is Rock 92's tower that is messed up. The top half of the tower was not flashing at the same time the bottom half was. Channel 8's tower was flashing all at the same time.

Rock 92 Tower has been reported. It took a bit to translate AIR TALK, then cross reference the Tower's ASR with the FCC Website, then a Google Map.

From the NOTAM Website: !RDU 11/257 3A4 OBST TOWER 2043 (1347 AGL) 9.73 SW LGTS OTS (ASR 1006654) TIL 0812091956
Then enter the ASR into http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/AsrSearch/asrRegistrationSearch.jsp
Then Map It.

Remember that all we need do is report a problem with the lights, not necessarily the extent of the failure.

FYI, American Tower owns this tower according to the FCC database.

My mistake - Dick Broadcasting owns the tower. American Tower owns another tower at 62 and 85 that has been reported with light problems.

the 98.7 / 97.1 stick? Entercom owns that one and the only tower that is 1,000ft+ south of Greensboro is the 1900ft+ Candelabra right off Hwy220/I-73/74

i noticed issues with the tower about a month ago...I didn't know it was KRR's tower though that appeared to still be on day strobes at night, but I was on the new 40 loop where the old 40 new 40 and brian blvd merge together and saw it....I remember about a year ago another tower was on day strobes at night for a while...

WSMW's antenna height is 1257' & WQMG's is 1099' both on the Entercom Tower.
WMAG's " " 1499' appears to be on the WFMY-TV "
WVMZ's " " 997' on what some call the Bernie Mann "
WKRR's " " 1299' on the Dick Broadcasting Co. "
'
These heights would be the center of radiation for each antenna which would indicate the structures they are mounted on are at least 1000' in height. Also just eyeballing the 2 channel 8 towers, they appear to be taller than Rock 92's which would make them 1000'+.
These stats were obtained from Radio-locator.com and are listed as the height above ground level for each antenna. Assuming this info is correct and counting the tower owned by American Tower, that would make 7 structures over 1000'+ S of Greensboro.

Was Rock 92 an 89 docket frequency? The 89 docket was a 80s thing by the way where you had to broadcast from you city of license.
