Rock goes begging for advertisers

I heard the "spot" yesterday. Rock 100.5 is literally begging people to advertise on the station. The ad basically pleads with teh listeners to let the station design a "successful" marketing plan for local businesses. Case in point, a "sales guy" claims he came up with the hugely successful UnPlugged in the Park series and he could do the same for any listener who owns a business.

One has to wonder if the flip has driven 99X sponsors away. either that or the sales guys can't sell the product. Has anyone paid attention to the spot load at Rock 100.5? How many spots do the run per hour? Are they doing long sets with no interruption? Has it been over an hour without Mistress Erin saying how much she loves the Pink Pony South?

I now all stations do this type of ad to drum up business, I just had to post due to the desperation factor.

TRG said as much and blamed it on the station being new. Hence, all of the SSSteve PSAs.

TRG 3.0 show still has that new car smell. Well, maybe a late model, but clean, used car smell. …OK, maybe an old used car that’s just been detailed. Anyway, the show has only been on the air for a few months so what are the sales weasels using to base rates? I'd think that some advertisers might wait to see real numbers.

How will Rock's lack of sales affect Q100 (at its new frequency)? ;D

How will it afftect? If less money comes in, then less money can be spent. YOu can only keep them seperate for so long, then you got to do something to keep the wolf from the door. The Cloud Company took one approach to this, the Fort Company took anoher. It will be interesting to compare their results in about April of 09.

106.7 may be suffering birthing pains as well. I have been hearing spots begging for advertisers as much as three times in one break. :'(

Here's another take.. Not only are these two stations new, the economy isn't exactly in great shape at the moment. Potential advertisers are watching what they spend and where they spend it, so until some positive official numbers come out, their bean counters won't turn the dollars loose.

I am also one of the many people who has been turned away by the state of terrestrial radio, though I have to say Rock 100.5 sounds good and it's refreshing to hear stuff on there that I haven't heard in years on the air. I actually have been finding myself compelled to turn on the radio and listen because I enjoy what I hear on there, and as a listener, that's what it's about. Also been good hearing TRG back on the air, though I admit most of my morning in-car listening is music from CD.

If they get ratings the ad $ will come. TRG will be good draw for them much better than Imus followed by satellite programming. It is a tight economy and people are going to be cautious with spending on an unknown entity.

I've heard other stations do that in a bad economy. And of course, when advertisers have less to spend, they're more likely to go with a proven product.

With traditional non terrestrial radio business down 17% and local down another 8%, it's no wonder they're using commercial inventory to pimp advertising. Radio is all about cash flow and (at best), a flat recovery isn't expected until 2010. Radio stations will have to go even further to enhance an already dismal profit margin.

Profit margins aren't dismal. They are still large. Revenues are down, and in public companies, share price means more than profit margins.

Most agencies will not spend a dime on a new station (even a new package of an old favorite in Rock 100.5), until 2 books are in. Good economy or bad. Even local agencies who can hear the show and can see the upside from that and the trends will not stick their necks out until they are certain. Get used to the begging spots for most of 2008.

A buyers view: The Atlanta radio market is too chopped up. Search, word of mouth, email, and local promotions work! One client used topic specific boards to promote a local retail event - didn't spend a dime on media - and the location was slammed. Overall our client’s budgets are in line with '07. The media choices have changed. For example: Targeted e-mail yields measurable results. You can see open rates, click throughs and track call-ins. We still use radio but only go 2 maybe 3 stations deep not 5 or 7. A traditional/non traditional blend of media is working. The challenge for radio, TV and print is that second tier stations or publications aren't even considered. An exception: A rep that approaches the first call with studious knowledge of the clients business and its challenges; one who brings a stand-out idea to the table - no cpp, no new morning show hype - and develops a results driven partnership where the clients customer and the stations P1 audience match.

In other words, a rep who went to CSS classes and took the lessons to heart.

As an aside, I'd like to know the source of these numbers:

..down 17% and local down another 8%,..

Which would indicate that local radio stations' billing is down 25% across the board. I don't think it is.

I think a smart buyer would jump on 100.5 now while they are on sale. The ratings are high but they don't have the proof yet. I have a sneaking suspicion that they will beat the bert show in total listeners if not the first rating period then soon. George Stein has been doing that. It seems he is one of the only sponsors in the morning. I don't notice things like that easily but I've heard his ads so much I'm ready to go buy a motorcycle and a beer.

Wasn't that what Stern would say to try and not get fired early in his movie. Get the ratings and the ads will come.

this is the best thread ive read in months ;D 99x had lots of advertisers. 12 million $.maybe they shouldve left it alone?? or least put rock100 on a diffrnt signal and not killed x?
so they r begging 4 advertisers? rob roberts will have 2 buy 1/2 of the city tequila shots now to get some advertisers.

this thread gets 2 thumb up & a bong hit from me.

If you think that they assumed from day one they would out-bill X don't kid yourself. They went out and got TRG for the long-term. Had 99x had a good morning show generating the kind of ad revenue a morning show needs to make to carry the station then 99x would still be here today. Sean left a station already in decline and with no better alternative for the mornings than the Regular Guys, 99x was dead in the water. Much easier to build a rock station around TRG with thewir heritage and not worry about them out aging their audiencel i.e S & V on Star 94.

The bottom line is radio sales are tanking everywhere; even within the top 5 in any given market. The problem is with national sales (-17%). Marjor market stations are accustomed to selling a large share of their inventory to national. The savy account executive needs to reach out and grab direct market sales to make up for the lack of national money being spent. That is the reason for the "begging" for much needed local business.

tibbs i dont remember ever hearing 99x beg for advertisers. if anything they had too many commercials.
