Rock & Roll Jocks & Jocks

I was never really down & jiggy with the idea of a rock station airing live sporting events. With the possible exception of the occasional tequila fueled naked bungee jump off X-Game, I've always figured the best way to serve your R&R audience would be by simply cranking the tunes. I was more than a little surprised when WBLM took WBCN's lead and joined the Patriots Rock Radio Network.

OK, the Pats are a hot number and by airing the games you prevent a competitor from getting them, so I was willing to give it a pass. But when I heard tonight's 3 hour pre-game show leading up to an exhibition game I thought WTF? Perhaps there's more going on than meets the ear.

Is it possible that the powers that be at Citadel would consider following 'BCN's lead yet again by flipping the Blimp to an all sports format? Stranger (aka: dumber) things have happened......

Isn't there something in the contract that states you have to carry the pre-season games too? I agree that the pre (and post-) game shows are waaay too long. I supppose there are some out there who are really that into it, but I'm not one of them.

Nassau always wanted to do the 3hrs of Pre Game and 3 hours post game... thats $80 of job security, getting homework done for college and radio show (WWLR) / Nassau voice tracking prep :) Oh how I miss the MOO getting caught up in major snowstorms living in the haunted bedroom upstairs all night tiil the morning shift comes in for monday

Okay, WTF? Is this a new trend? FM Sports Talk? Blow up a heritage rocker for a fad format? What's next? 'TOS and 'KIT become sports talkers because they're in New England and Sox sells? I wish ONE station would actually flip AWAY from a sports format.

It's absurd for any sporting event...any, and yes, that includes the Super Bowl, to have 3 hour pre- and postgame shows.

I'm sure they'd do 6 hours pre & post if they could sell out the time at premium rates. Why do you think WCSH recycles the same news stories in three consecutive half-hour blocs from 5-6:30PM? (and much the same thing in the AM. At least there's the Today Show to break up that monotony) Their overriding sense of altruism? Their sacred duty to serve the public? To raise enough revenue to buy out Fred Nutter's lifetime contact? We're getting warmer.....

Gary Tanguay and Andy Gresh > "Back In Black" for the 100,000th time

Gary does a great job on the Patriots network, as well as imaging 'ZON (I worked with him at the old 'BGW on Hildreth St. in the early 80s) but 6 hours of Patriot talk sandwiched around a game?. I understand the $ angle, and that it brings in more revenue than a typical Sunday afternoon/early evening (and that IS the bottom line) but I'm willing to bet most PDs (not necessarily GMs or GSMs) would rather go with much shorter pre- and postgames; 15 minutes, a half hour, tops. I would love to see a breakdown of a typical affiliate's ratings for the pre- and postgame shows as opposed to the actual game.

Does anyone listen to radio for music anymore? Will they in 5 years? 10? With all the IPods, cell phones with Sirius, etc... wouldn't it be prudent for station owners to find something people can't get elsewhere? Seperate themselves from others while putting on a revenue generating, ratings grabbing format... And in the case of the Pats they play on Sundays or Monday nights... How much revenue are you generating during those dayparts playing music? The thought process is to put it on during periods where you won't jeapordize your brand and give your audience (and possibly a new audience to expose your music brand to) something different to listen to while making a boat load of money! OK, after Rights fees a Canoe load!
Just a question.

Yes, believe it or not, poeple STILL listen to the radio for music...and weather...and news...and to be entertained. I speak to a LOT of NON-INDUSTRY people from around the nation, and I'm amazed how important good, ole radio STILL is. I know MANY, MANY advertisers who SAY radio is the best medium for their businesses.

People are still looking for what I mentioned above. Yes, many stations don't do it right anymore...but many others are making a good effort.

Despite the Ipods, XM, and everything else facing radio...Radio will ALWAYS survive and will ALWAYS offer special things that NO OTHER medium can offer.

For those who love to poo-poo all over radio...I'm sorry to let you down...RADIO IS STILL ALIVE and WILL ALWAYS BE AROUND.

Curb: Point is not enough are doing it right. The ones that do are succeeding. Unless the trend to consolidate stations and make then a glorified juke box, music radio will likley become irrellivant. That's why station owners are looking for new programming streams to set themselves apart and provide a "destination" program. One that advertisers will support and will be listened to. i.e. the Patriots, Sports radio and FM Talk...etc. Just my opinion. I do think with the divestitures now and in the future a more locally focused music product can be successful. Hey, anyone notice the trend back to Oldies? Interesting

Oldies..good Times,FUN..etc

Like Comedy. Makes you feel good.

Times are tough.

Yeah, but who wants to hear the same jokes over and over and over again.

Well then, explain why Bob Marley sells out every venue he performs at in New England.

Speaking of Bob Marley (funny guy, btw) I tried his new beer 'Upta Camp'. Don't bother, unless you just want one for the novelty and collect oddball labels.

cute Biff...

george Carlin. Mostly the same routines for 40 years, with a somewhat different spin here and there.

Tested. Proven.

So what brilliant Totally New and Original radio programming format do you have in mind?

Here's an idea Jim C... counter program the conservative talk shows... That's sure to succeed! And when it doesn't bitch and moan to try and get the fairness doctrine back! Wait that's been tried right? HA!

different, unique, local, entertaining, engaging and yes LIVE! There's the recipe kids (IMHO)... go cook it up! Need a bold operator to make that happen. Maybe not.
