rock103/WRCQ

Is it just me, or is WRCQ unlistenable in the afternoons? Ever since Joe Johnson was let go and later moved to WROV 96.1 in Roanoke, this new guy they have doing PM drive, "The Greek" is a huge joke. I don't know if this is his first radio job or what, but he seems to be very nervous and inexperienced, especially with the constant um's and ah's (when simply talking about a just-played song or what's next).

I'm guessing that "The Greek" is Kelvin Culbreth, who used to be the PD back in the early/mid 90s. I used to work with him when I got out of the Army in 92 and did mornings for WRCQ when Metropolitan Broadcasting owned it. If it is Kelvin, he's very knowledgeable as a PD...as for on air, I haven't heard him in quite a while, but he was good when I used to work with him. Good guy. You mentioned that he's new...how new is new? When did he start doing PM Drive?

The Greek? Is that the same guy that used to be at 96Rock/WBBB?

Funny you mention that. The very first time I heard him, I wasn't paying attention and I heard him say "hey it's the Greek hope everyone's having a good Thursday afternoon" and the first thought that came to my mind, was D from 96rock, but then I listened more while he talked and could clearly tell it wasn't him

I wanna say he's been there since May or June. Before he came along, Ann Thomas was doing PM drive and Jay Rock was on middays. As a programmer, he's doing a damn good job, trying to get much more new rock in the playlist. I'll give him credit, he's better than he was at first, so I take back the unlistenable comment.

I heard Joe Johnston was let go due to letting an F-bomb slip on air (not sure if it was his own or a listener making a request or that had won a contest) any

Don't know Jay Rock, but I know Ann...like Kelvin she's a cool person, too. I haven't talked with Kelvin in years, so I don't know what his involvement was with Rock 103 before going back on the air recently, but he'll get things smoothed out soon enough. He knows the area and he knows the music, too. I'll have to check out their stream now that he's back.

He's on from 3p-7p, Ann is still 10a-3p and no night jock/overnight jock.

What happened to Al at Rock 103? He was the PD a couple years ago. Ann is a really cool person. I am glad to hear she is still there, and has survived all the layoffs. When I was at Q, Ann was only VTing Rock and doing remotes, just as I was doing at Q. We were both, technically, part-time.

Al was let go in August of last year, still don't know what happened there. He was a great guy, I miss him and Sean O'Brien, the former night guy/APD/MD.

wow! I am sorry to hear that. Al was a great guy and knew the station's audience and format. I noticed Q98 has Rick Dees in mid-day and Billy Bush piped in at night, so there goes any chance of anyone local EVER hosting those slots. Working at Cumulus, you don't know from day to day, whether it's your last day. They are even piping in a Wilmington morning show on WFNC AM. "Fayetteville's Morning News" from 6-8 and the talk show with Jim Wood from 8-10 got lots of response. Is anyone even reading the 90 second newsbreaks at the top and 1/2 hour on the morning shows on the Cumulus stations, anymore? The guy that followed me isn't on the Q site anymore and I am sure they don't send the news copy to Rick Dees to read for them.

Al Field was great to work with when I was "Senior PD" of the Fayetteville cluster back in 05-07. He did a great show, and had the respect of his talent. He also made sure I got my picture taken with all of the strippers when they came through the station. Priorities, you know? Those were the days...

This was all before "the cloud" came through and eliminated everyone on staff that was full time except for the PD's at each station. Once that happened (after I left), I heard that Al went on to greener pastures, and was selling insurance. I understand he is doing quite well doing so.

Is Al Field "Al the Vanman?"
If he is, he's on facebook.

I like most of what Rock103 does, but they were better when there was more 'freedom.'

I remember Al from my time at QSM and yes, he's on Facebook. I'd never have found a career in radio had Q98 not had live/local part-timers. I even did a live overnight shift for over a year. VT sucks!

I hear 80s music during the lunch hour. Is that Rick Dees?

I wish they had 80s music when I was going home. That new garbage is pretty hard to take. Although this time of year WBRF is doing bluegrass, which I don't like quite as much as regular country.

Q98 does Retro Lunch with the 80s from 12-1 everyday. It's interspersed with Rick Dees' comments and dropins but they do a lot of local giveaways then.

Also, Billy Bush isn't on any more. Now, they have Bill Barker on in the evenings. He's local, which is a nice change.

RE Ann Thomas WRCQ I used to listen to Ann back around the late 70's to around 1980 or 1981 when she was at WCAO and WKTK in baltimore. Does anybody know where she is now.

This station is a bit interesting for a Cumulus station. Almost appears they are sneaking in some alternative stuff along with the current active rock format. Wiki says they are mainstream rock. Not sure if that format even exists anymore.

Wikipedia, if that's what you mean, says whatever someone has decided it says. There should be a reliable source backing up everything, but that's not always the case.

The format does exist. 105.7 Man Up in Greensboro sounds active a lot of the time but has some classics that wouldn't fit that format, and some music that is actually borderline wimpy.

I wish I could try WRCQ on the way to the beach, but 103-X in Florence and WSOC in Charlotte have seen to it I can't do that.

The sparks up a good conversation about all the different formats and what they are suppose to define. Rock formats that I'm aware of (officially) include:
1- Album Oriented Rock - Not sure if this exists anymore. Originally, it was stations that would play deeper cuts. Curious of some examples if this does exist and a better definition.
2- Active Rock: Leans newer (post 2010) with a few harder classic rock hits. Some active rock stations play nothing older than 1990 (I'm thinking Entercom stations).
3- Alternative: Plenty of these .
4- Rock: Maybe this doesn't exist anymore. Not sure. Seems like I remember that title labeling a few stations on radio locator. Maybe just another word for Mainstream Rock.
5- Mainstream Rock: Yeah, maybe the Greensboro station would match this. The Man Up stations tend to stay away modern rock and focuses hard on 80s and 90s with a few 2k's and 70s here and there.
6- Classic Rock: Duh
7- Adult Album Alternative: These come in with different leanings. Some more older (Q1053 Savannah) and some newer (Lightning 100 Nashville). Some lean more adult hits while others lean more alternative. Some more indie than others. Some more 70s leaning than others. Never understood this format actually.

Note: Then you have some Niche formats. 1057 The Point in St. Louis comes to mind. It's an active leaning alternative station. Some would call it an alternative/active hybrid. I'm also hearing "Heritage Rock" used to define some formats. Those tend to be very hit based stations that cover 70s, 80s, 90s, 2ks. Likely more mainstream rock stations. Thinking WIXV Savannah.

I agree with you now the more I think about it - Man Up would be mainstream. Personally, I despise these stations. We have one in Georgia and there use to be one in Missouri. Very hit based that focuses on 80s and 90s with a few 70s mixed in and also a few 2k's. Little, if any, post 2010 cuts.
