I would consider this part of a AAA station. The Point is a much "harder" and plays Metallica and Disturbed but they also play new alternative music from bands like Jr Jr, Band of Horses, The Avett Brothers, and X Ambassadors. The Point is interesting because I think they lean newer "alternative" in the evening and overnight while playing it safe with alternative and adding more active rock tracks during the day. You can go on their website and see their playlist. Compare the 2:00 p.m. hour with the 2:00 a.m. hour and you will see what I mean. They tend to start leaning newer and more alternative after 7 p.m.

Again, maybe I'm wrong but I would label the playlist above as straight AAA.

Regarding active rock, Entercom's 93.3 the Planet in Greenville SC has played the occasional 70s song. I've seen them criticized for that here. I don't know if that's still true, but I was amazed to hear "Tom Sawyer" several weeks ago. That one's not even metal.

Yeah - Project 96.1 was an active rock station in Atlanta and it also played a little bit of classic rock. It was typically from HARDER classic rock artist like Sabbath and Led Zep. Entercom in Kansas City is actually pretty interesting. I believe Entercom has an active rock, alternative and classic rock station all in the same market. The Buzz, the alternative station, is about as true to alternative as you can get. Leans very indie and new vs the typical safe alternative you hear on Iheart Radio. Meanwhile, the 98 Rock is active rock and unless they hve changed a few things, they are all 90s and 2ks with a few 80s. Leans very new and leaves the classic rock with the classic rock station. I've heard Active Rock stations go about it differently. Many of your Iheart Radio active rock station and even the Cumulus ones play a mix of classic rock and new rock with a newer leaning. They avoid the prog rock 70 artist and stick with your text book rock artist of the 70s. However, you have a few that refuse to go any older than 80s and even those 80s cuts are few far and between.

Personally, active/alternative hybrid 2k and beyond. Kill the 90s and 80s and include alternative and active rock artist post 2k. Label yourself a modern rock station and play it all from Death Cab for Cutie to Disturbed. You have to admit, the playlist would be exciting and large while remaining modern.
