Rocky Allen Gone From WPLJ

Well that didn't take too long......First John Gambling gets tossed at WABC and now I just heard that Rocky Allen has been released from WPLJ today.....Apperently Race Taylor will be taking the afternoon slot for now......I would keep a very close eye on 'PLJ because it looks like there is going to be a format change in the works soon.

Also heard that a couple of support folks from the morning show are gone. Rock and Blaine, John Gambling and George Weber and an engineer at WABC...probably 7-8 people from the WABC/WPLJ complex...and who knows who else!

I hear WABC simulcast.

the BIG Show with Scott and Todd in the morning followed by WABC for the rest of the day? Is that what you are hearing? Or will it be MY 95.5 FM?

Another oldies/greatest hits station in NYC? I don't think so. On the other hand, there also a lot of classic rock type stations at the moment.

Ah but the price is right.

Hell, they could make a huge profit just on the cost of personalities. Hate to say this, but this seems to be the mode Citadel is in. This isn't about radio anymore, it's about making money any way possible!

Anyone consider that the mythos attached to Scott Shannon might be wildly overblown? Like, radio pros and geeks are hyper-attached to the persistence and future existence of WPLJ because Scott Shannon is some kind of consummate music-radio professional--but that's part of his (and WPLJ's) problem now?

You got to face it--he's the ultimate 80s-style cringe-inducing radio-DJ-blabbermouth slimebucket. Maybe he's kinda, er, "dated". To look to him for solutions because he's a so-called embodiment of what radio does best might actually be counterproductive...

As someone said, there are two huge salaries at the head of programing at WPLJ. Scott Shannon is making a large salary as I'm sure the Vice Pres of Programing is too.

In other words, he's like the middle-aged Ryan Seacrest.

Getting back on topic, which New York station do you think Rocky will turn up at next?

Is he perhaps a good possibility to complement Star & Buc Wild on Pulse 87?

It appears that scott shannon has his hooks in with citadel. It is reported that in his basement he repragrammed a D>C station.I just looked at inside radio rating for plj.Pretty shocked that they were that low.Big problem was knew disney was selling them so why put ad money into them. They had heir price and that was it.I emailed citadel that all i saw was fresh and lite. When did u last see PLJ adds.I mean you could do a crossover between wabc news and rocky.Rocky had some funny stories. He really blew it when he went to ABC morning. He was the top drive show in afternoon time. Many a stressed XMAS shopping evening was made better listening to rocky and blaine

I think he'd probably end up at Fresh, if he stays in the market.

Rocky at Pulse 87? You have gotta be joking.

Rocky at Fresh? Not really that much more plausible. Fresh is there for listening in offices and businesses...passive listening in other words.

I could see Rocky ending up at a country station if someone decided to go that route in NY. I could also see him going to NJ 101.5.

I could see him on CBS-FM. Then again, they seem to be going for cheap hires. If they were interested in picking up other stations' scraps, they probably would've gotten some of former Lite personalities.

real oldies would make sense for 'plj-----if they don't go country!!!!!perhaps the hot country format their 24 hour network unit offers---this way they fill a hole w/o DJ's.AFTER ALL, WE ARE DEEP IN THE BUSH ECONOMY with its move to no frills!!!!On ave z and coney island ave, expensive cars are parked in the 99 cent store where their owners buy groceries----citadel will go the same route and maybe even bring TIMELESS FAVORITES (that is running on wnnj-am newton,nj)to 'plj!!!!

Country? Maybe. If PLJ's billing drops enough to where a country station would probably pull in similar numbers, I could see Citadel going for it, but very low maintenance...few or no jocks, on the cheap.

Real oldies? No way. 50s and 60s isn't going to cut it in NYC, from a billing standpoint...they might as well just stick with PLJ and play fourth fiddle behind Lite, CBS-FM and Fresh.

Standards? Absolutely no way.

CHR? Would be a great idea to take on Z100 (and to a lesser extent, KTU, Hot 97, Power...even Pulse!) but that kind of format would require a big investment to run...it would not be cheap, and I think Citadel is looking for cheap at this point.

As for Rocky Allen...his type of programming would fit in with CBS-FM's target demo, however, as much as CBS-FM is still a station where personalities have somewhat of a prominent presence (by 2008 standards)...I still think the music there is king, and the type of show that Rocky does wouldn't fit into the format.

If 95.5 went country, maybe they could pick him up for mornings and voicetrack the rest of the day. He probably would also fit in nicely on NJ 101.5, but that station's lineup doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon.

Re: Rocky Allen Gone From WPLJ ,Crank it up a notch- RADIO!

They need to switch the station to an all 80s (maybe 70s thrown in there) kind of station ,like when they used to to saturday night at the 80s,with requests and all.In other words a forever kind of saturday night format.
It would be a big hit and make numbers for PLJ.This station has been loosing its "wow factor" and it needs to get it back. With the right personalities,(bring back rocky allen)yes women like him... and keep the talent that people like ,they can bring the numbers back! They arent trying anymore is what it boils down to!huge playlist And flush the format once and for all.Come on PLJ,show us some love.
The 80s format ranked HIGH in the xm and sirius ratings for all you people who think this is a dumb idea and if you think Im wrong, thats why sattelite and ipod are winning.People dont want limited playlists and DJ less formats.Hey look at JACK.....that flopped. Why ?a music format needs the "oh I havent heard that in awhile song or songs".Mickey by Toni Basil is not the only 80s song out there ,dammit.
How about a new format, call it Pirate and make the station able to play anything from Def leppard to Bjork?
Dam I hope they dont do something lifeless with PLJ....

Maybe WPLJ should bring back "Mojo Radio". ;D

All I can say is, think business. They make one schedule change, aka take off Rocky Allan, and you people think PLJ is flipping. Not going to happen. Have you looked at how much money that station makes? Citadel might feel that more time dedicated to music will be a stronger sell...who knows.
