OK, I have a question. Do people really care about the Rod Ryan show anymore? We are jaded being radio geeks and geek-ettes but I am curious from a simple listener's point what do you think?
I was pondering this as I realized that WRNO doesn't even make my 6 buttons on my car stereo anymore and I haven't even listened to his show since before Katrina and I used to listen to him everyday.

Just wondering. Is it a viable show anymore? Out of sight out of mind?

Right after the hurricane, it was a little repetitive being completely local stuff, but now they've gotten back to having the skinny, interviews, phone calls etc and it's a good show again. I may be just a lowly listener, but I KNOW (as opposed to no) alot of people who do love him and are loyal listeners. He takes phone calls, does interviews, plays games and engages the audience unlike W&J who just get on their soapbox and talk in voices. As for WRNO being a useless station, well to each his own. Fortunately, most don't agree with you and they've consistantly rated high, even over the beloved 106.7 when it was still the end. So not everyone thinks the station is useless and a waste (not wayste) of signal.

The only comment that boardbitch got right was the fact that KKND almost never beat WRNO in the ratings.

> The music at WRNO has suffered tremendously since Clear Channel acquired it in 2002. I worked there from 1999 until being laid off for "budgetary reasons" in March of 2005. It was Centennial Broadcasting when they called me and asked me to return for my news, commentary and other radio duties. About a year later WRNO was sold in a "friendly sale" to Beasley. Months later another friendly sale happened as WRNO was sold to Wilkes, who then turned it around quickly to Clear Channel. A lot of friends seemed to make money off of this heritage station, but I digress.
In late spring 2002, when all employees of WRNO and KKND were informed of the station swap, it was decided that Ginty (whom I like and respect) would remain with 106.7 and this kat who was hired for 94.7/94.9 would be given to WRNO.
Jim Owen was hired by Muriel Funches shortly thereafter and kat was given the task of being music director, even though she openly stated to me she never worked in classic rock before and didn't know much of the music. She said she hated Creedence and Zebra for one thing, and then when I noted to her that cold ending songs were being sliced off in the last half second, all I got was a face full of venom. I offered to help with the music, among other things, but was cursed out. Though she never worked for WRNO before the swap and was thrown into our station she made it clear she wanted a title, at least assistant p.d.
In fact it was about this time last year, Kat issued a memo to all of Clear Channel New Orleans saying that she had been named as Program Director of Bayou 105.3. She cited in this memo Jim Owen, whom she blamed for not making her P.D. as well as an increase in pay by Entercom for the reasons she was leaving WRNO. This was shortly after Clear Channel fired W&J. Well, naturally the sales department went nuts and there was some intense negotiation with lawyers for about a week, then Kat issued another memo a week later saying that "like it or not, she's at WRNO to stay". I issued my own email to management about that situation and immediately Kat began screaming, as usual, for "Hooks to be fired! Or at least demoted, pay cut, etc.!"
Kat, from the Northeast somewhere, is the music director for WRNO and is responsible for the same repetitive, pre-programmed, unimaginative music that you hear. 99.5 WRNO had NO program director from the time that CC got it in late Spring 2002 until they laid me off in March of 2005. Jim Owen was the G.M. of RNO, NOE and the other so called "non urbans". He absorbed some of the P.D. duties. Kat was the music director.

I want to add this regarding the music at WRNO. I openly stated to Clear Channel New Orleans that WRNO should not play the edited versions of songs.
For over 25 or so years WRNO had played the album cuts of the Who's Who Are You?
with the word Phuck in it. We played the same version of the song when I was at 92.3 WCKW from 1990-1998. Hell, even at my first station, owned at the time by former WWL employee Ken Sasso, which was KAPB AM&FM, we played that album version. Other quick examples: Pink Floyd, Money, with the word bullshit,
Charlie Daniels Band, Devil Went Down To Georgia, that says son of a bitch, not son of a gun.
Steve Miller Band, Jet Airliner, Funky (BLEEP) going down in the city, not funky kicks. Now the most liberal region of the South, the New Orleans area, is subjected to edited versions of these same songs which are still played across this nation even in small towns.

My advice for WRNO, as I said in a previous post, a good housecleaning, top to bottom. New G.M. who isn't too old and tired, new music director who knows classic rock. New air talents. Get rid of all Texas based morning shows. We don't need condescending prima-donna posers from out of state pretending they are in it with us, or telling us how to vote, but I'll have a lot more to say about that very soon. Finally, I wasn't kidding recently when I suggested the FBI open a field office at CCNO.

May the Force, etc.

Re: Hooks commentary on this subject

Good post Hooks. I enjoyed my very brief time working with you.

Re: Hooks commentary on this subject

I meant rated high in the target audience. Speculate all you want about who I am or where I work. I told you, I'm just a lowly listener. I used to work for a station (NOT WRNO) and I picked up from there that the PD or MD doesn't have the end all decision on what is played, so make sure you spread the blame around to the GM and corporate too.

As for Rod being an out of state prima donna, he lived here for 7 years so it's not like he's speaking without experience. No, he's not going through the same thing the rest of us are, but neither are W&J. I don't understand why people attack and degrade. At least he tries to include the NO audience instead of ignoring them and concentrating only on the Houston audience.

I guess we'll agree to disagree.

KAT ROCKS/WRNO WEAK

>
OK, I don't know anything about all that internal crap going on over there and Hooks is funny as hell on-air. However, I can tell you all this, KAT is a true radio pro and a real rocker. Not like "alternative rock" dj's that yap on and on about how drunk they were the night before. Also, I wasn't dissing Rod by any means. I loved his show when he was here and after he left. I was just curious as to what people thought. I know I listen to WWL now and never did before. KAT rocks, has worked in markets that crush our size. She is a pure rocker who is knowledgeable about all the artists and she relays information that listener's actually care about. She does a great interview, listener's love her and she is awesome on-site at events. She is cut above ALL jocks in N.O. In regards to the music? Not Kat's fault. Hello Clear Channel. The people who are sucking the soul out of music. Also, KAT had to deal with the lukewarm water man Jim Owen. He is boring and safe doing whatever he has to do to kiss *ss to coporate to keep a job. She lives and breathe's ROCK and she is one of the only pure things left in radio

i dont care where hes at. hes boring!! yak, yak..all talk!!

I don't care who you are, I'm just not letting CCNO get a free ride on this message board anymore. I use my real name and identity which means I have more credibility than you.

Yeah, right.

New Orleans should have their own morning shows. People in Louisiana are tired of being told how Texas is better for them. From San Antonio trying to steal the Saints, to corporations that would rather service what they consider a "backward state" from afar, I predict a continuing anti-Texas backlash among citizens and listeners. Also, when I mentioned prima donna posers, I actually was refering to w&j.

I was thinking the same thing. The statements here and later in the Marconi1 post certainly read just like the person at CCNO who I knew.

..i hope 1053 does get jacked..at least

Thank you, sir. If radio had more people with your professionalism, courtesy, integrity and morality, then we could post more positive things such as brilliant statements made by on-air people, a fantastic idea or concept from a sales or promotions person, or the dedication of a true radio engineer worthy of Starfleet. It was also my pleasure working with you and I do hope our paths cross again.

FYI: Any on-air talent that goes from New York, Boston, San Francisco, Miami, etc. to the smaller market of New Orleans simply can't cut it in those cities.
No one on-air leaves those cities to come to New Orleans, it's long been considered a major step down. How long was Kat employed in those cities, and why did she leave them? Maybe people that worked with her in those bigger markets can enlighten us. Where exactly did she work before and for how long?

If you truly don't know anything about that internal stuff as you wrote, then how do you know about Jim Owen, etc. and Kat's constant battles with him.
As I said, she blamed Jim Owen for not having a title last year when she issued the memo at CCNO that she was accepting the position of p.d. at Bayou 105.3 and was leaving WRNO. Yeah, that's professional.

note to the NAB..satellite radio..its worth paying for!!</P>

My final thoughts on this thread

> > > I'm not saying I won't answer a response in this thread, but I have a few more things to mention about WRNO then I'll move on to other topics.

First, in my opinion, Katrina was the second Kat to ruin WRNO.

As someone who was there I wanted to explain why WRNO has the morning show it does now. When Clear Channel fired W&J after weeks of negotiation through the holidays, Kat immediately began screaming for R.Ryan to replace them. Not because of any kind of great numbers at KKND nor in Houston either.

When CCNO swapped stations with the cluster at 201 St. Charles Ave., WRNO went to Howard Ave. and KKND went to Wilks. I honestly felt bad for them because there are a few mini Clear Channels out there and Wilks, if you can believe it, in my opinion, was worse than Clear Channel, and that's saying something.

RNO seemed to make out better in the deal than KKND, especially regarding swapping the station vehicles. I didn't know it at the time but there were apparantly some very hard feelings at 106.7, with some of the anger directed at me because I was so gleefully ecstatic to be free of Wilks Broadcasting. Imagine, being glad to go to Clear Channel.

It wasn't an easy process for those of us at WRNO either and a last minute surprise and disappointment, in my opinion, was that Jason Ginty was remaining behind to work at 106.7, and Kat who was on 94.7/94.9 Extreme Rock was thrown to WRNO.

Most everyone in Clear Channel welcomed WRNO coming over, especially in sales because WRNO's demos have more money, to put it bluntly, and was also a more successful heritage station in the center of the dial. There was one lady though, in sales that would stare me down and make Sith faces at me because she missed her buds at 106.7. I tried to be nice and polite, a year passed, two years and more and every single encounter I had with this lady resulted in her making these Satanic eyeball popping faces at me, Manson lamps as they say on the Sopranos. Every instance I had to speak with her no matter what it was regarding had her angry and red faced and furious. I got a message from Cox Communications saying that they had contacted her numerous times to get me to voice their live spots. Mr. Levins was able to reach me and naturally I was more than happy to cooperate and do what it took to make it happen. When I asked this lady about it she said,"they don't want you to do their spots." I responded with, "Mr. Levins from Cox Communications indicated he's being trying to get me to do their lives on WRNO for quite some time". This infuriated this lady again. She screamed,"Fine!" and proceeded to be irritated about me doing the lives.

In all my years in radio I worked with a lot of sales people, some very good, some not as good and a few novices that didn't know what was going on, but until I went to Clear Channel New Orleans, I never experienced someone working against me; actually acting as if I was an enemy who needed to be excised from the station, despite ratings that I wish I could legally brag about here.

You would really be surprised at the politics and petty decision making pervasive in radio. It's cheaper to pay someone to voicetrack a morning show from out of state. I was informed from the start not to even consider applying for the morning show position in any capacity. Kat, the sales person she lived with, and Muriel Funches, their friend who visited their house, wanted me out.

In my opinion Muriel Funches was a continuation of the previous O.M. (whom I did not work for, but I know radio people have heard the stories). I'll add this one: I was told that previous to Muriel's arrival an air talent from Blues 1280 AM was making a SIX FIGURE SALARY. I love the blues, they would've done better to put it on an FM.
Muriel hired her friend for the position of Clear Channel New Orleans promotions director. The problem? She had the same position in Chicago. Yes, she would fly back and forth between the two cities, stay in hotels, arrive in stretch limos as ALL Clear Channel executives did. What a waste of money and resources.

One of Muriel's favorites was the sales lady who hated my guts since day one, friend of R.R., she and Kat lived together for quite some time. She didn't want me doing any of her remotes and Kat was actually responsible for scheduling the remotes for talent on WRNO, and was not to be questioned. Time and again, especially in my last months there, I had remotes scheduled then cancelled at the last minute with no explanation.

In my 20 years of Louisiana radio I had never experienced a work environment with such overt hostility. My advice for a sales person considering a position at CCNO--If you can't take yelling, screaming, fussing, and cursing, they apply elsewhere. I had never been in a work environment that tolerated such rudeness to coworkers, and I don't mean just me. I had never seen a place where select workers could curse out others including their supervisors and was ignored despite complaints. I understand that Entercom employees got a little taste of this when they bailed out Clear Channel.

Yes, I'll say it again. WWL bailed out Clear Channel when they didn't have to.
I believe every station off air during Katrina/Rita should receive a zero in the ratings for every day they were off, regardless of reason. It's only fair, and it makes sense.

Do you know what supplies Clear Channel provided when I was there for the smaller storms that passed through? Peanut Butter and crackers; employees were also told they could buy stuff from the snack machines--as long as the power was on.

I never signed the non-compete that Clear Channel presented to me TWO YEARS after acquiring WRNO; and a year later when I was laid off for budgetary reasons and staff changes I refused to sign a multi-page severance agreement that would have given me a months severance but I would have given up a ton of legal rights including the ability to post on this message board. I didn't sign it and I'm thankful every day I didn't.

Finally I'll say this...

If it's transmitted from Texas, turn it off!

And thank you sir, but I do believe I'm out of the business. I can make just as much money doing cable drops and broadband installs without the hassles and politics.

So you think she's screaming for new rock right now then?

I'll say this: several of us at Clear Channel wanted a new rock station in the cluster, however both Citadel and CC, due to the station swap, were prevented from having a station with the format that they exchanged. In other words, Citadel wouldn't have been able to have a classic rock station and CC wouldn't be able to have a new Rock station, for a period of time. I believe that time has elapsed and both companies can now have a station to compete against the other. I must add that what I said here did not mean that KKND couldn't play some Ozzy or WRNO Metallica. The Classic Rock and new Rock formats do share some artists. However, the previously mentioned GM of CC, Jim Owen, absolutely did not want RNO to be "hard rock"--Guns & Roses, Metallica, etc., even on Friday night.

I was one of those that was hoping that somehow we could put the new Rock format on 104.1, but that was not to be. I believe that CCNO would do better with WRNO by opening up the playlist, rockin' out at night, playing the album versions and not the censored, edited versions of songs, etc. The versions played for decades before CC. If they were smart they would also find an FM frequency to devote to new Rock.
Since it was obvious that new Rock wouldn't find a home on 104.1 for a variety of reasons, I also suggested that 104.1 would be a better home for the Sportsradio format, and the Hornets games, which don't belong on WRNO.
The Hornets would've had a signal that goes from New Orleans to Lafayette. 1280 AM is so small that 3 or 4 halogen lamps in the city can block out their weak signal.

During my time at CCNO all the stations were very strictly divided between Urban and Non Urban. Jim Owen the GM for the non-Urbans and Carla Boatner for the Urbans. The powers that be decided that 104.1 would be a "suburban (white) hip-hop station" for the white kids in Metairie and other places that never set foot in a housing project but wear all the hip-hop garb and get off on Eminem.
Q93 did not play Eminem, for whatever reason.
I'll also say that Q93 was the only CC station manned 24/7, all the others had at least some voicetracking.

I want to close by saying there were a number of good people I worked with at CCNO, and I want to name a few of them. These are people I liked and respected, and still do. I know I'll leave some names out and so I'll apologize in advance because no matter what the time on this post says, it's about 4am as I type this.

Eddie Edwards, WNOE. Saturday nights were the best nights of the week on WNOE.

CJ & Monica Pierre, Q93. Monica is also from rural Louisiana like me and we share many political viewpoints (this current World War 3, etc). I loved her positive energy.

Bruce Alan, WNOE. A hard worker, great board op, and a good guy.

Gerry V., 1280AM. I regret the timing of our duties did not allow for us to get to know one another better, but he's a pro.

A.J. Appleberry, WYLD FM. Another pro and a smart p.d. whom I respect. He's good and he knows his stuff.

Ray Romero, traffic. Another hard worker. I joked with him that I made him a movie star after the folks at New Line Cinema asked me to locate a voice that would give some local sports mentions. This also caused hard feeling for crybabies across town that were considered but rejected for the part. Glad I could be part of it.

Randy Savoie, 1280. I gave him too much grief during my time there, even on the air. He's someone who deserves better, even though he pronounces his last name incorrectly.

Casey Carter, WNOE. A real sweetheart whom I miss, but I'm really happy she had much greater success in Jacksonville. I know I could always go there for a radio gig.

Janessa Dawn, WNOE. I miss you too, wherever you are. I know that you will find happiness outside of radio.

Jeff Jordan, production. Quit gossiping and get back to work! I know that when you get your medical degree your kindness will be appreciated by your patients and their families.

Loretta Petit, AM940 WYLD, WYLD for Jesus. Folks, I can't tell you the number of laughs we shared together daily. If you can just imagine, me, Hooks, doing my rock n' roll Hestonesque prayers mornings on WRNO and in the studio next door Loretta Petit in the gospel station praying that the Lord wouldn't knock me down with a lightning bolt. I miss you Archbishop Loretta Petit.

Now let's see...Clear Channel management, well, uh...let me think.....okay, I suppose it's possible that Jim Owen might make it to Heaven one day. Jim, the Lord told me he's pissed at you for letting me go and your station will never have the ratings it once did. He also said he'd like you better if you would stand against the wickedness of Clear Channel.

CC Sales:
Ron Asseo: R.I.P. You were WRNO's biggest cheerleader when it came over. Sorry I couldn't make the funeral, but you know what it's like being a rocker.
When I get up there in about 80 years, we'll get together with John Lennon and smoke a blunt.

Ken Petrie: You were great with us at 92.3 and I was thrilled when you joined us at WRNO. I'm glad we were able to share the memories of Anne Rice's historic Memnoch Ball 95.

Heather Rapolo: you're just too damn sweet! Tell that boyfriend of yours Jeff Jordan to quit gossiping and get back to work!

Others in CC sales....uh.........well, hell, 3 names is plenty enough for salespeople.

Promotions:
Dale Evans. He was only at CCNO a short time, but he was a rocker that loved WRNO, which is why he was only there a short time.

Others in promotions....let's see...jaded, angry college age interns that used the promotions closet and prizes as their personal toybox as compensation and only cared about Q93. I hope the fast food chains that employ you keep their doors locked.

Engineers:
Paul Burt. Given way too much grief from people who wouldn't have been qualified to work in radio before Telcom 96. You could call him at 4:30 am with any tech issue, and there's not a lot of radio engineers that will do that.

Jon Buffaloe: someone else who's a professional who was treated shamefully by others. Anyone who would ever yell at this man should burn in Hell.

Tom Courtney: When you would say that WRNO is your baby and I would respond with "someone call child protective services!", I was kidding, mostly. You know I can't dislike you.

I'm sure in an hour I'll think of more names I should've posted, but this is getting longer than Lord Of The Rings.

May the Force, etc.

Hooks

"(Yawn...) What, the console is one channel again? Just hit it."

Nevermind that it was KKND's old console and Gawd-knows what skan^h^h^h^h entertainment-worker had previously been sitting on it for Rod's show :)

J, you were a joy to work with yourself. Keep the fire burning.
