Rotten Weather...

Today's freezing rain and sleet are affecting our signals on WPPA and T102... online streams are working uninterrupted.

Besides having the walk the last half-mile up Sekol Road on Sundays at 5AM, and having to run WICK by hand in '98 after lightning fried the Cetec Schafer 7000 system, my most memorable weather-related experience was in June 2006, when we had flooding here in Schuylkill County, and ran T102's morning show for 5+ hours in a news/info format with just me and Jay Levan live on WPPA running things ourselves til others could get in.

I guess with how many places are automated overnights, there are no more stranded-in-a-snowstorm stories these days.

Any good weather stories?

I was working at WDLS during the blizzard of 1991 (or 1990 ... it's all so fuzzy). I was the only one with a 4WD vehicle, so I ended up working two 18-hour shifts one weekend because I was the only one who could get up Plymouth Mountain. I worked 7-midnight Friday, put the station on the satellite, went back at 6 a.m Saturday, worked until midnight, satellite, and then a 6A-12A shift again Sunday. And the only thanks I got was a warning about working overtime, which I was not supposed to do because I was full time.

Another good one was the blizzard of 1995, when I was working at WKXP in Bloomsburg (now part of Froggy 101). I lived five minutes from the station and had 4WD, so I did my morning show, automated the rest of the day, and just hung out at the station taking calls and throwing in voice tracks. Our afternoon guy was trying to come in from Williamsport, but he got stuck on I-80 when it closed down. He left his house at noon to try and make it in and ended up there until 5 a.m. the next day. State Police had to keep bringing gas cans to people so they could keep their cars (and their heaters) running.

Don't miss those days. I like getting snow days off (and holidays, and overnights, etc.)...
