Rowdy Yates

It appears he's quite the regional legend... but the Tulsa market seems locked down pretty tight.

He could work KVOO or K95.5FM, but KVOO just hired Kelley Cash, & K95.5FM just brought in Kelley's replacement... hard to think there's an opening either place.

From what I'm reading about him, he'd be a perfect fit at Big Country 99.5, but their voicetracked automation system is really doing the job and at low cost... I doubt that they'll want to disturb their current setup.

He might be able to blend at Star (depending on his sound), but I doubt they have any openings, either. Ditto for Mix.

So many of the other stations are so young targeted & looking for a "natural" (aka non-traditional) radio voice... I've never heard him, I don't know what he's capable of, certainly he is a significant talent from the awards, recognitions, syndicated show, and the sorrow of those who listened in Houston & those who worked for him.

Could Clear Channel afford to put a live / local guy on 93.5, Chrome-FM? Would he be a good fit at KWGS? Does he have any talk experience that might let him add a local show to KRMG or KFAQ? Any sports talk experience that would allow him to work at The Animal or The Buzz? Would it be worth his while to talk to stations outside the immediate area like BrightStar 100.1 or any number of country stations across Green Country?

Would he perhaps have better luck offering his voicetracking skills from Tulsa to any number of stations nationwide until something opened up here?

I'm afraid it may be a bit of a waiting game for an opening to appear in Tulsa radio... although you can bet he'll be on plenty of PDs' radars!

...Then again, who knows who he's already talked to here. 8)

If he is any good, he will probably end up at one of the Cox stations. They have a way of getting the good jocks. If he is from Houston, he may already have a connection with Cox since many of his friends now work for KKBQ. KVOO has been a revolving door for so many jocks in the last few years which may scare someone like him. He may not even have to stay in country radio. I could hear him on KMOD or KJSR too. Either way it will be good to have someone new in Tulsa radio.

Rowdy hosts a nationally-syndicated country show. My intuition tells me he'll either work at a country station, or he'll do something else to supplement the income from his weekly national gig. He could end up at 99.5 where Journal would likely voicetrack him to their other stations, much like they voicetrack all of their 99.5 jocks from Omaha. If I were KVOO, I'd hire him for mornings with Sunny Leigh.

Whoever hires him, he's worth a wad of cash. I don't see him making in Tulsa what he made in Houston, which is why he may not be on air here at all.

Since he's moving to Tulsa because of his spouse's job, he may have more flexibility in what he can do as far as work.

He could probably help a country station - my guess is Cox - they have a country station that could probably use someone of his talent. I don't see Journal spending any money to improve their voicetracked automaton.

You are probably right. Not a huge fan of all of the Cox stations, but they do seem to hire and retain good people. BTW, I think they finally dropped NEW on Mix. They are funny sometimes.

Well y'all - Rowdy has already gotten his latest gig in Tulsa - read about it here:

And as for his syndicated show through WW1 - he's had it for years, and for those of you that don't know, he produces it himself from his home studio, and I'm certain he'll continue to do it the same way once he gets to Tulsa.

All I can say for my friend is this: Good Luck and congratulations, and the same to the Tulsa market - you're getting one of the nicest guys in radio, and one of the best talents I've ever seen - knock em' dead Josh!
