Royce International saga, update

Yes they can. The rules are a bit different for commercial stations like KREV vs KPFA. Mainly most commercial stations (withstanding some rural stations) must have their translators within their protected contour. They must also literally receive the originating signal on a tuner and rebroadcast it. Non-comms like KPFA can basically apply/buy a translator anywhere around the country and use satellite/other methods to rebroadcast the station.

The other issue involves trying to shoehorn/buy a translator into what is one of the most crowded radio markets in North America.

Thanks so much for your input. Seems like the crowded market is the main issue, there certainly is some places on the map that have generous coverage of strong signal that Don provided you can throw a translator to cover more people, but money and the crowded nature of the market seem like a barrier. What a shame as 92.7 misses heavily trafficked areas like 101 and large areas like San Mateo and western Santa Clara county. But I suppose that’s just how it is in a market that covers such unique geography.

I'm quite familiar with San Mateo as I make frequent trips to the Bay area and that's where I always stay. I've never had any trouble tuning 92.7 in my rental cars in and around San Mateo.

I live in RWC and have it on my favorites, it rarely completely cuts out but the weaker signal on the map is very apparent - even as Don said himself, they’re aware! Driving around San Carlos, RWC, Palo Alto and San Mateo (city) return a lot of static. Sometimes to the point the signal is unlistenable. This is regardless of the vehicle driven. 101.7/KKIQ comes in a lot stronger for example which isn’t something I would expect. Additionally, no San Francisco or San Jose stations give me trouble, even KAWL, a signal running on a fifth of the power further north comes in with zero issues or static.

It is also worth nothing that with market data we have of in-home and in car listening, 85% of listeners listen at the 70 DBu contour, which all of these areas are not included. Keep in mind, us enthusiasts and fans aren’t the main audience at all!

I'm also in the Redwood City area. (Howdy neighbor!) KREV/92.7 is non-existent in my house, even on a GE Superradio, or on a little bedside radio with DSP that usually pulls in KXJZ/90.9 (Capital Public Radio from Sacramento) with only minor interference, sandwiched as it is between KALX/90.7 and KCSM/91.1 which are significantly closer. I haven't checked if it's listenable in my car, but I can't recall ever having it stop on 92.7 during a dial scan, which I sometimes do if I'm killing time in some downtown parking lot. OTOH, it's definitely grabable north of Hwy 92.

All we can do is hope that it doesn't go to another Christian broadcaster! We don't need a fourth fairly big FM signal with that format... 107.3, 95.3 and 97.7 already cover the market, as well as some of the cities best translators (104.1) and we have multiple fringe similar signals hitting the market too.

VCY is still interested, but at a lower price than before. Let's face it, Crazy Ed's stable lacks any Thorobreds - just a bunch of mules owned by a real donkey. Chapter 7 BK will put an end to a seemingly never ending saga.

Whoever buys it better be prepared for lots of litigation, pointless or not, from Ed. It's his nature!
It's My Nature:

A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't resist the urge. It's in my nature."

(From Wikipedia where they obviously have met Mr. Stolz)

Isn't this actually a Zen Buddhist parable?

KREV broadcasting full silence. been listening since 11:40AM to now. Feels like a safe bet to say Pirate 92.7 is no more.

sad

Good news is the station is back on the air! For however long is left up to the court. Hopefully Stolz will sell to the fella programming 92.7 - I think this format can really succeed even on this limited signal.

In this recent article Stolz says he's open to a lease deal for this frequency:

Of course he is....at a price that only makes sense to Crazy Ed. BK Seven is the only number that makes sense.
