RTV new lineup

My local RTV affiliate is locked in until the fall. After that, it will be replaced with MeTV. I can't see what full-power television station would want to be affiliated with them anymore when there are newer, more appealing options such as MeTV and Antenna TV. My local RTV affiliate is owned by Media General - they used to really seem to be behind RTV, but it seems they are moving away from them also.

I wonder if they're considering picking up some of those old PAX reality shows. That appears to be the direction they're headed in. :D I think they couldn't afford to renew with NBC Universal, so they replaced that content with cheaper, lower quality programming. All of this stuff they have added is probably cheap. Luken should have spent the money they spent on the translators/LPTVs for more higher quality programming on RTV. They should just merge TUFF TV, RTV, and My Family TV in to one network. This network belongs on low power affiliates only now, IMO.

Even with a handful of non-retro shows, RTV It's still a heck of a lot better than AMG and America One. Perhaps the one way they can stand apart from MeTV and Antenna TV is to offer something a little different by offering a mix of programing. Antenna TV runs old movies,so what's wrong with RTV running some Canadian content.

They've run the Universal shows for 3 solid years - do you blame them for not renewing? The new batch of retro shows is an interesting mix. They've got stuff from Sony, Peter Rogers Organization and Classic Media.

It's no secret that Weigel/MGM was able to get affiliates away from RTV by offering them sweetheart package deals in bundling THIS TV and MeTV - even if some of the stations in a particular station group didn't air THIS TV.

Last time I looked Antenna TV was having trouble getting new affiliates.

Still no word on PBJ or RTV2's launch.

Word was that AZTV wanted to keep RTV affiliation, moving them to ch 7.3 in Sept. This may change their minds.

There's always TheCoolTV for their 7.3 subchannel (if anyone from KAZT reads this board).

You do make a good point. I just hate that they couldn't get more shows that aren't airing that are more familiar (like all of those Sony 80s sitcoms that Antenna doesn't air, or Warner).

I think some of the Universal material had aired for more than 3 years.

Starting late sunday night they began airing different programming.
Davinci's Inquest, Cold Squad (2 Canadian shows)New Zorro, Movin On, Naked City, Route 66, Starsky and Hutch, Police Story, The Saint ( A Brittish show starring Roger Moore) and Intelligence (another Canadian Show) Some slots are filled with 2 episodes of the Rifleman and Daniel Boone. They've reduced some of the scripted shows on Saturday with magazine shows such as Little Miracles, criminal minds (not the cbs show) , a car show, and outdoorsman.

The Milwaukee version of MeTV showed "Naked City" and "Route 66" in the overnight hours before it went with the national feed.

TheCoolTV is a train-wreck. They're trying to target to many different audiences. Old Videos and new videos. And infomercials. Can't forget the infomercials.

CoolTV isn't all that bad, and has gotten better and could use a little more work. They show way too many lame live performances rather than the official produced videos of the same songs. Strikes me as being kinda cheap. The whole mish-mash of genres reminds me of old MTV, but it is kind of a trainwreck. Still, nice to see a channel that still airs music videos.

Gray says: “We were informed that NBC-Universal is keeping the rights to those shows in-house, and isn’t making those available to broadcast stations. The good news is the management at RTV has been very active in acquiring more product (“The Saint,” “Starsky & Hutch,” “Route 66,” “Highway to Heaven” starting 7/4), and is planning on making some more acquisitions throughout the remainder of the year.”

It looks like it might have been NBC Universal that called the shots on this one. Perhaps RTV didn't choose to not renew, but they had no other choice? Looks like the Universal shows are off the broadcast market? Comcast may have something to do with that...

Looks like RTV is evolving into a OTA "TV LAND" or "NICK @ NITE". Less 50's, 60's & 70's and more 80's & 90's.

Actually the new lineup seems to be the opposite. I'm noticing a lot more black & white shows (like Route 66) and fewer shows from the 80's. Hulk, Mangnum, Rockford Files, Simon & Simon, Kate&Allie, Emergency...all gone now.

Their decline was inevitable. Too much competition from deeper pockets. They're losing affiliates looking for better programming which is leading to less revenue stream for them which leads to worse programs which leads to less audience, etc. It's a vicious cycle. It will be interesting to see whether they can even survive at all. Highly doubtful.

Yep. They say it was time to change the schedule, but I think they had to because they couldn't afford the higher-profile shows anymore. Why not keep the NBCU stuff and add other new shows? I mean, they dropped Emergency! and The A-Team for Celebrity Kitchens and The Saint. I'll bet most, if not all of these shows were very cheap. The majority of the viewers are mad about the changes, but they apparently have a small, loyal following that would watch them airing test patterns.

I think Luken Communications is taking on way too much in launching these new networks (PBJ, RTV2, TUFF, buying My Family) and buying all of these stations. I won't even ask where the money's coming from....

8) .....just got back from vacation.

I wasn't that impressed with their old lineup. Now, if RTV has access to all those Classic
Media cartoons (why save them for PB&J) why not run a couple hours of them in the
mornings, afternoons and evenings? I think that would make for a better schedule.

They could even advertise the future PB&J during the cartoon blocks. I would think at a
time like this they would break some of them out of the vault.

It's not that they "couldn't afford the higher-profile shows anymore", it's NBCUniversal is not making those shows available to broadcast television anymore, as you can see here:

Forget the cartoons - there's THE LONE RANGER in the Classic Media Library - That would have been better to run then say the late 1980's ZORRO!

I wonder if NBCU will air any of the old RTV shows on Universal HD? They have already been airing some classics like TJ Hooker for quite some time now. Otherwise, I don't see the point of holding back those shows since that would mean they are not making money off them...unless they somehow think holding back the shows will boost DVD sales.

Could they be planning some sort of on-demand platform for classic TV on Comcast (or maybe they already have one, I don't have them)?

Funny, because the other studios do this. It obviously had to do with the new NBCU. I wonder if RTV could afford a deal with Warner, then....

BTW: every night at 12am, when Cold Case Files comes on, I lose RTV and it says "Technical Difficulties, Please Stand By" with the logo below it. CCF never does air. Is anyone else having this?

Man, I would love to see the Warner detective series again-77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Surfside Six, Bourbon St. Beat. The Warner westerns were pretty good too. I remember when one of the cable channels ran them several years ago, I think it was Good Life. That would really help RTV. I just have a feeling they can't afford them.

I noticed that they are running Police Story. If I'm not mistaken, was'nt the old Angie Dickenson show "Police Woman" a spin-off of that show? I wonder if RTV could start airing it. I'd like to see some old Police Woman episodes. I like Starsky and Hutch, Daniel Boone and a few others. But I noticed that they are playing 2 episodes of the old Robin Hood show every day. I'm not sure if many people will be interested in Robin Hood. And I don't even remember Movin On.

I am old so I like the new RTV lineup. Sure, I liked Rockford and Magnum but after seeing all of the episodes it was time for a change. Police Story is great and I love Route 66. However, our RTV station KRET Palm Springs is running promos saying "ME TV" is coming soon.
