Rumba & Beat On The Move

Glad the potential WFLA rumor didn’t come true. Simulcasting that on 95.7 would have been a terrible waste.

WFLA is a heritage news talker with a large audience. Their two existing fm translators are terrible. Putting it on a big stick might not be your preference, but it would not be a “waste”.
And considering the election year money in an important state like Florida, I am quite surprised that wasn't the end result, but internal politics won out over regular politics.

WFLA’s demos are too old, so iHeart will not take up valuable full-power FM space for it. 970’s signal is fine for those who want to hear it.

Iheart rarely puts its news talk stations on full market FMs. Cox did it in Atlanta, Jacksonville, Tulsa and it works well for them to lower the demos but it failed in Orlando to stay on 96.5fm.

Good call on iHeart’s part. The changes will help Wild 94.1 and 101.5 The Vibe in regards to demos, but at the same time gives listeners looking for non stop throwbacks a new destination.

Uggh. Most “classic” and “ throwback” stations tend to miss the mark when it comes to being programmed locally. Tampa’s hip hop scene had some hit jamz and artist like Khia, Tamp Tony, Tae Bae Bae and Rated R to name a few. Hopefully they dont miss the mark, but does this mean The Breakfast Club departs Tampa???

Rumba likely won't perform much better on 95.7 than The Beat did.

Rumba should've stayed put, and 95.7 should've been flipped to classic hip hop.

I question how many folks will seek out classic hip hop on 106.5 & 92.9. Those are obscure frequencies for the overwhelming majority of MSA radio listeners

It would give iHeart a better position with target demos - the other two signals don’t cover the entire market.

And they already did throwback hip hop on translators a half decade ago, which didn’t go over too well.

The move to Sarasota is just to protect the brand from being scooped up.

If the brand isn't valuable, why would they care if it is "scooped up" or not?

It is not surprising to me that throwback hip-hop on flimsy translator signals garnered poor ratings.

106.5 is a Class C2 that covers about half the market including St. Petersburg. The 102.9 translator covers downtown Tampa.

The Classic Hip Hop format will be there to chip away at 101.5 The Vibe and Wild 94.1 to help WFLZ in demos.

Makes sense. I still question the wisdom of moving Rumba to 95.7, though. That's a crowded format space.
Building up the reach of their Spanish "network" in key Hispanic markets. In particular if the rumors end up being true about another market flipping away from the "Rumba" brand are true. 95.7 automatically becomes the biggest Spanish signal in the market. Maxima recently lost their PD in the Beasley cuts and 97.1's signal isn't the best so if there is an opportunity to grow the reach of the format this is it.
