Rumours? Is CBS Changing Formats

*rhythmic dance leaning chr would be a disaster for CBS

Ok, so please explain to us on why you think that it would be a disaster to have a CHR station that has a dance lean to it?

where did you get your information from? inquiring minds would like to know... :)

I guess I didnt make my point clear.

Playing Cascada, DJ Sammy and other Dance tracks that are decent crossovers are great. I dont have a problem with that at all.

Again, I think NY is overcrowded with rhythmic powered formats. I think a straight on Top 40 Format with Shelly Wade on air and other major NYC personalities would be great!

Somehow I doubt that CBS would flip 92.3 to Espanol. And unless something changed since the last time I heard the station online, La Que Buena 92.7 is not a hit based Latino Station. They play Mexican music.

Well, the Mexican music La Que Buena plays is contemporary "hit" for that culture. If this was California or Texas, such a station would have the popularity equivalent of a La Mega.

But 92.3 doing what CBS did in Dallas from Movin to Mega 107.5? Ain't gonna happen :) Too much clutter with Latin formats on the FM in this market.

You couldn't do a straight Top 40 format here like you've envisioned....not as long as Z-100 is here. Z-100 is just that powerful of a radio station with the CHR format. That's why no one has really competed with them over the past 15 years or so. That's why if CBS wanted to compete against them, you have to go "outside the box" and do something different.

Regarding rhythmic formats, that really depends on the definition of what one considers "rhythmic". I'm not going to pretend that I know your mind here but I'm just "guessing" that what you may consider rhythmic is Pulse 87, 'KTU, Hot 97, Power 105.1, 'BLS, Kiss-FM, maybe La Mega on the Latin tip. And yes, these stations do offer music with a "beat" to them. But these stations all go on different angles (R&B, hip-hop, Spanish, A/C, dance). From my direct POV, Pulse 87 is current dance with an "edge", while 'KTU is more "safe". A 'KTU would not have a problem playing Cascada, DJ Sammy, David Guetta and neither would a Z-100. But CBS will have worst ratings if they stuck solely to that "convention" regarding dance.

Yes, CBS should play Cascada, DJ Sammy, etc, if they did become a CHR. They should also play Ercola feat. Daniella, Nicola Fasano, Da Groove Doctors, etc. (don't worry if you don't know who they are, it makes a point ;D ), at the same time that they cover what is currently charting on Top 40 radio. But not to the point that the station becomes another "Pulse 87" (Pulse has it covered) and 'KTU would NOT TOUCH the dance artists I've mentioned, at least not on a semi-grand scale anyway.

And the crowd here? They'd accept it and are more open to this than what has been "tested". New York is a rhythmic city to begin with so to that, I don't see any failure going this route.

CBS would fail if they took 92.3 and went STRAIGHT off of Z-100's books. That's all I'm sayin.....

How did WNEW do from January-April 2003 when it was stunting as a CHR? I remember hearing for months "new station coming soon to 102.7". And that's around the time I discovered Radio-Info.

Here is an idea - Andrea and others, I despise the Jack format. It is obviously not aimed at people my age (59). I never listened to it when it was on 101.1 for obvious reasons. People on this and other message boards criticized it for playing the wrong music.

What about bringing Jack to 92.3 with a contemporary music mix? CBS radio would save money by not having to pay DJs.

Thoughts?

The source of the rumors for this thread are from "Radio Business Report", mentioning speculation on format changes in cities (L.A. & NYC) - some of this seems to be at best: "shaky". But we'll see. Check links to the main story about CBS Radio & the related stories below.

I don't know if a CHR format with the "Jack" name would happen on ANY station...having said that, it must go back to a couple of things:

1) TOO MUCH R&B, TOO MUCH Spanish music in NYC
2) LACK OF country, LACK of competition for Z100
3) As I've said before, why mess with success?? WCBSFM 101.1 IS SUCCEEDING, SO LEAVE IT THE HECK ALONE!!
4) and REMEMBER ONE THING - you GOT-TA be careful when you're seeing all these rumors...

But all that is just MY opinion - you can all go back to your usual whatevers... ::)

They will not make the same mistake twice by flipping WCBS-FM. Very few stations have people protesting after a format change, so you better leave it alone to avoid negative press!

So there are no hits in Mexico?

WQBU is a hit music station.

Agreed - I DOUBT that WCBSFM would flip again - besides which, THEIR RATINGS ARE VERY HIGH, SO LEAVE THEM ALONE!!

Totally agree. Especially with the economy in the shape it's in, it would make zero sense. They probably haven't even considered flipping 101.1.

I think Fresh is OK. Why on earth would they flip it before 'XRK? It has much more potential. It may not be a smash success, but I think they would keep it before 92.3.

Remember....CBS pulls the plug on their stations usually. They aren't ones to tease in advance or stunt long (well, with WOCL/Orlando as an exception). Their flips are usually quick.

If WXRK does go....wonder if the calls will go back to their 92.3 in Cleveland.

They hyped it for a few days but it was already starting to be talked about FOR A FEW WEEKS BEFORE it happened....

Probably not, as Cleveland's former "K-Rock" is now known as "Radio 92.3". Plus, I believe CBS is in the process of selling off their Cleveland radio properties... Maybe they'll be "parked" on one of their AM stations...
