Rush Limbaugh to satellite radio?

RE "Hey Holland, I'm just curious."

We did NOT rehearse this, right?

What are the call letters of some of the radio stations that you're consulting right now? What's your biggest market?

Two things:

1. BE CAREFUL.
Moderators here DON'T like changing-the-subject.
They remind me all the time!
:)
And this particular subject DOES intrigue.
But since you were nice-enough to ask...

2. RE biggest-market-I've-worked: Two-part answer:

a) All-of-'em, since much of my work is national, developing and advising various syndicated shows.
I wrote dang-near every word you'll read/see/hear here:
http://moneypitradioshow.com/

b) Literal answer: New York.
And yes-that-WAS-me, several-Sunday-afternoons-ago at a certain station in Los Angeles.
TRYING to stay-under-the-radar, as we staged a 2-hour on-air pilot for a show you'll be hearing more about soon.

My references (http://hollandcookemedia.wordpress.com/about/) will demonstrate why the airlines are lovin' me.
And the video you'll see there is a dang reality show about The Glamorous Consulting Life.
North, East, South, West; small, medium, major markets.

But, based on 17 years, 4 months, and 9 days since-I-hung-out-my-shingle, here's a tip if you're thinking about hanging-out yours: Where-the-action-is for consultants is in medium and small markets, cities JUST-big-enough that you-don't-have-to-say-the-name-of-the-state. We kill 'em in Kalamazoo.

Why:

1. Owners there are...there. Not somewhere-else, barking instructions through a tube. Not insane, and empowered to actually make a decision.

2. They're seeking success templates, what-the-big-market-guys-know-that'll-help-them. Seeking to AVOID experimentation.

3. Talent coaching. The kind of do-more-of-this/do-less-of-that that I would've KILLED FOR when I was starting out on-air in Smallville.

Or say hello next week in Las Vegas.

Now, back to the topic...

No need for Rush to go to SatRad. I think Dr. Laura made a mistake in making the move. For Stern it sort of made sense because he could say and do things that FCC Regulations prohibited him from doing, therefore the show could be sold as 'Howard Stern unleashed' or something akin to that.

Rush has no FCC issues. He will have a healthy advertiser base again. Just not the right move for him.

I don't know what DR L's bottom financial line was or is, ( I think she had pretty high ratings on KFI in LA) but I can see her current situation being a "comfortable" business model.

If Limbaugh loses some of the major market stations, going to satellite and podcasts would bring quite a few new subscribers. If Limbaugh goes from 600 stations down to 500, then that will be the story.

Remember Rush as a person who had a TV Show? As a Person who was an NFL commentator? As a person who wanted to buy a NFL team? As a person who had a "no boundaries necktie business?" As a person who never had to apologize to please sponsors and affiliates?

The "King" failed in all those endeavors. So thinking of the guy as invincible is a mistake or Arthur Godfrey would still be on the radio.

RE "The 'King' failed in all those endeavors."

Hey, NOW he's trying to sell iced tea...BY MAIL ORDER?

I ADMIT IT: Each year, this page one headline is a gag...one that's meant to make SOMEONE gag:
http://getonthenet.com/12April-1.pdf

Around mid-March, I start thinking what'd be good-4-a-laff.
This year, El Rushbo did the heavy lift FOR me.

And let-the-record-show that what-you'll-read was published BEFORE today's trade press confirms one possibility I postulated: In some markets, Limbaugh could end-up back on suburban signals. Hello Camden.

Why does he want to follow Howard Stern and Dr. Laura into career oblivion?

As Keanu Reeves says, at some point, in every movie: "Wooo..."

OK tough guy...or girl ("on the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog")...

First-things-first, for The Moderator's benefit:
YOU DO SEE ME trying-to-keep-the-thread-from-being "derailed," right?

Now then...

I'd like to see how your well-documented advice of dropping Rush is helping your radio station clients.

HOW well-documented?
Where/when have I offered such a blanket recommendation?

RSVP links puh-LEEZ...though I should warn you: If you Search @ radio-info.com, you'll have to sift through a PILE of posts wherein I DO, repeatedly, offer that (all together now):

"In markets where my client is the Limbaugh affiliate, 'he's the biggest star in Talk Radio;' and in-markets-where-we-compete, 'he's the biggest buffoon.'"

And regular readers here will note how I'm quick to:

1. offer that I may be the only person in Talk Radio who thinks his/her opinion DOESN'T matter; and, in-saying-so...

2. invoke that GREAT scene in "The Fugitive:"
Harrison Ford: "I didn't kill my wife!"
Tommy Lee Jones: "I don't care!"

Heck, DO-try-this-at-home, an oft-posted item you might route to Sales:
http://getonthenet.com/InterruptRush.pdf
I direct your attention to the first sentence.

Indeed, you've already been offered my recommendations for how-affiliates-can MAKE-THE-MOST-OF Limbaugh's gaffe.
In case you missed the earlier post:

Is your station a Rush Limbaugh affiliate? To read the strategy I sent to my client stations as the story began unfolding, Email [email protected]. Moments later, the robot will deliver your 2-page strategy download.

Resist the temptation to start-in-the-middle-of-page-one: "Jump in front of the parade."

Or maybe you're too shy to even Email a robot. After all, soreheads here tend-not-to take-me-up-on-my-offer-to (wait for it) ACTUALLY HAVE A CONVERSATION (oddly, threatening to many in Talk Radio), whenever I've posted my phone number (401-330-6868). Fear of Caller ID?

Again, I caution, on-behalf-of Moderators who chastise ME for, in their view, changing-the-subject:
Whattya say we stick to it here?
The-subject-being satellite radio.
AM I NOT TRYING to avoid dreaded T.I.O.?
:)

If you want to compare resumes, RSVP by phone or to [email protected]; or say hi in Vegas next week.
I've got a Fabulous Radio Prize for everyone who attends either-of-two sessions I'm presenting, and seating is limited:

P contest
Between someone using their real name and links to their stuff on the internet and someone who has 3 posts.

Who's ready to call the winner in this one?

Winner? There is no winner. Everyone loses here - the prosecutor, the defendant... and especially us readers. While I am no fan (at all) of any government restrictions on speech, the moderators, having ownership of the board, can and should prohibit personal attacks.

In this economy, I think it is technically interesting to see what career moves people make and how they work out for them. Whether Limbaugh or anyone else. I don't think it is about rooting for someone to fail or succeed, or about their political views, just what makes good career and business choices. Glen Beck, Dr Laura, Stern have been interesting case studies.

I think Rush might have a blundered by not following Martha Stewart or Oprah in "owning the brand." Limbaugh did help Snapple establish itself as a product, but had no ownership. In contrast the "Savage family," aka Wieners, got into the energy beverage business, having an ownership in it. Now a multi-million dollar deal.

The Rush branded ice tea, seems a little too little too late. Some beverage analysts see it as a possible novelty holiday item, but that is it.

Another thing to note is that Limbaugh has not profited writing books the way others in talk radio have. I think he has had one or two. Savage, Bill Press and others are more prolific in churning out a book or two a year. (Can't hurt the bottom line.)

Rush, good at radio (at least he was) but his other endeavors as a business man seem to fall short. Just think, he was in the presidential box at the Republican Convention years ago (when Bush Sr. lost to Clinton), now he is kicked to the curb by current candidates of both parties (even Rick Santorum said he was an "entertainer") and the NFL and TV sports wanted nothing to do with him. A fading brand? Like General Motors in the 1980's?

Funny... bet against Rush at your peril. He has always remained, despite the dire predictions of many who have come before. I've been listening since 1990. Nothing has changed. Rush shall prevail. ;-)

People said the same thing about General Motors (didn't Rush USED to advertise Cadillacs?) now iced tea and jelly beans...what happened to his TV work?

He voluntarily ended his syndicated TV show 16 years ago after a healthy four year run.

His gaffe has had an impact, and it will take time for his operation to recover. It may never fully. But stay on the broadcast air he will with no move to satellite.

That's a gaffe presuming that Sandra Fluke does not get caught engaging in future behavior which proves that she really is a sl....uh, er.....what he called her.

TV and movie "Westerns" ....a big deal for years then they tanked. "Movie Musicals" ...they had their run. Radio plays and dramas, pretty well vanished, and so on.

So there could be a lifespan for political talk radio, you never know.

Yes, political talk will die some day. I don't think we're close yet. If we ever get to the point where one of the parties gets two thirds majorities in Congress, then political talk might start to lose influence.

The last post got me thinking - I am a P1 talk radio listener, but I have found myself getting exhausted lately as I listen, so I have been listening less than I used to. I can't figure out whether it is the talk programs or the dire future of the country that is wearing me out. Mabye both?
