Russ Martin Non-Compete

Man, that guy has been off the air for a long time.

When does his non-compete run out?

Damn right!!! Russ Martin is a.........................

If I am not mistaken...

His non-compete is up already...but before he was fired...he signed a 4 year multi million dollar deal with 105.3. And 105.3 agreed to relieve Mr. Martin of his duties...but honor his contract. So...technically...he still is getting paid for another year and a half.

So..even though his non-compete is up...as long as he is getting paid to not work for 105.3...he doesn't have to go back on the air if he doesn't want to....I wouldn't work either if I was getting paid to stay at home.

I hate to tell you but Russ is done in Dallas. He had a good run but it's over now even when his contract is up next year no one's going to hire the guy.

RIP Russ Martin

I'll give him credit - his show got me through the LONG part of the workday where the clock just seems to stop from 3 - 5.

Haven't found anything on the dial that is actually funny to replace it. Since Janet's fiasco, everybody's gun-shy about humor on the radio.

Maybe after he stops getting free money, he could put up a nice webstream where all 20 of his listeners could listen to his fart jokes, etc. Riviting radio indeed!

Perhaps, him, Pugs, Kelly could each have separate shows on the stream. Split it up, 8 hours a day.

@ead-

I'm not a Russ apologist and I don't care if he comes back or not. But two things are abundantly clear to me from reading these boards and keeping tabs on DFW-area radio.

One, this market is full of stations who will try just about anything, including recycling talent who have been cast off by competitors.

Two, Russ Martin still has some fan base left.

A comeback for Martin in Dallas is far from a forgone conclusion, but it is possible. You may not like the idea, but to tule it out entirely requires a leap of logic beyond all credulity.

No Non-Compete!

- TO CLEAR ANY MISCONCEPTIONS -

Well, first off. He wasn't fired. He was just taken off the air.

So he's being paid through his contract until it ends (in late April)...He's still essentially a CBS employee, just not allowed to show up to work.

Second, once a contract runs out - meaning you and the company both fulfilled each of your obligations in said contract, you do not have a non-compete there after.

A non-compete is null and void if you run the duration of your contract. The only way it stays in place is if (A) you quit or (B) you are fired with cause.

Once his contract runs out, he'll be able to go on-air the next day.

I am not sure that Clear Channel will take him back. If 105.3 goes in a more of a Hot Talk format, he could wind up back there, but also unlikely. His better days may be behind him now. Let's hope he saved his money so he can retire. You can't bring back old jocks or hosts and think they are going to perform like they once did. It won't happen anymore. Radio has changed too much. Look at all the good ones that are gone from KVIL. (Just an Exapmle), but more could be listed. I did not post this to make anyone mad, it's just how things are in this industry.

Where do you think he'll go? That's why I think it's a possibility, but why I don't think it'll happen.
so let's game it out- we'll immediately cross off all the female skewing stations -so not Russ's demo. Kills KVIL, Mix, KPLX, Kluv, etc.
That leaves you with the rock stations- KZPS, Edge, Eagle, etc.  All clear channel, not known (these days) for big talent contracts. But okay, again, let's game it out- KZPS- Bo and Jim do decent 25-54.  Whyupset that apple cart for a guy who's ratings were falling at 105.3 (Russ used to compete with 1310 for #1 with M25-54.  He'd dropped to the 5-10 range, which is part of why they dropped him, I'm sure)

So that leaves you with the Edge and the Eagle.  Haven't both of these stations gone to more music mornings because their talk heavy shows weren't successful?  And wow, talk about brilliant, what better way to connect with that 24 year old Edge listener, or that 31 year old Eagle listener than to put on the air a 50 year old has-been/ex-Eagle CHR jock.  Maybe they'll do it, I just don't think it's teh no-brainer like some of you do...

You make some good points, which is why I said a comeback isn't a forgone conclusion.

On the other hand, there are some other possibilities in play. If Stern comes back to radio, which ever station picks him up would be a natural fit.

Also, the Rational Radio experiment proved that you can almost pull of leasing your own signal and making it. None of the hosts on 1360 had the audience Russ had. In fact, P&K and BDH were Russ-dependent for their small degree of success in this market. Maybe Martin decides to lease and be his own boss. He has the cash to try it. I doubt he would ever make a profit, but breaking even is a possibility. A guy with that kind of ego and need to perform might be content breaking even at this stage in the game.

Then there is always the internet- be it streaming or podcasting.

Lastly, some station may raise the white flag, embrace the fact that they will not win the 18-34 demo, and start programing for the young boomers and aging gen-xers figuring its better to carve out a niche than keep loosing the rat race.

In other words, lowered expectations and a touch of desperation can make for strange bedfellows.

XM looks to be in better shape...but they're still begging off NASDAQ delisting. They have trimmed payroll considerably to finally turn a profit. Russ Martin is WAAAAAY too ingrained in Dallas to be a viable XM personality. I never thought Michael Vick would get another job and he did....but NFL still pays big salaries. radio doesnt

I would be surprised if anyone hires him. His off air rants and bully tactics are well known.

As someone who is not from the Dallas market but has worked there in radio I can tell this. There is a HUGE amount of overated talent there. Many who have been grandfathered in just because they have been there forever...Case in point Bo & Jim. I thought morning zoo radio died in the late 80's.Yeah, Russ did get a bit repetitve at times. But also..and there is no denying..He and his crew were entertaining. They kept decent ratings on a crap station.

Listen to your radio...How boring is it? Completely boring. Cumulus might as well be automated because of how the music is programmed. CC brands itself as the industry leader but it is actually just the willingly blind Captain of a sinking ship industry wide. CC has no market leadership in it's building in Dallas and on-air is bland. Yes, they have Kid and he brings in ratings and revenue..But its TMZ and Perez Hilton rehased into a radio show.

Like him or not radio needs a Russ Martin. It needs something to set it apart. Radio needs what consultants and programmers seem to think it doesnt need. ON-AIR TALENT! Radio is dying..a slow death. Yes, it lasted through television, L.P.'s, 8-tracks, cassettes and compact disc. But times they are a changin. Music can be had instantly..at will. Pandora radio will play only the kind of music I want to hear...Commercial free! But you know what. People still want to be entertained (yes even by commercials if they are done right) They still want to hear someone out there who has the same problems they are having. People want to laugh. And they cant get all that from whats on the radio now and they cant get it from downloads or music apps on their phone. So, Lets hope that a person comes along to entertain us in Dallas radio like we have had. If it's Russ..So be it. If not? Who will step up and show management they have the talent to carry a station on his or her back?

Lets hope somebody does. Radio needs it.

Gragree.

Love or hate, Russ could/can entertain over the radio. Real, manufactured, genuine, or not............it was radio that few others could provide.

But, then again, he always said he was gonna 'pop' himself at 50 and he's edging up on that so maybe a long-term deal isn't such a good idea right now. But as I get older and 50 isn't such a far off age anymore he, like I, is realizing it ain't so bad after all and that life and sex and good times are still to be had.

Just sayin', just sayin'........ ;)

from what I heard, his contract & non-compete are up in APRIL of 2011. So, he's got a year to go, getting a million or more per year. let's see, thats about 41,666 per paycheck. (2 checks a month and 1 million a year). Most air talent doesn't make in a year what he makes in a month.
And some FM station will make the leap to FM talk not too far down the road, and make it exciting and compelling, and not just tits and farts and how drunk they got last weekend. So, Martin can be a 'content provider' as talk talent is called now. His crew was dialed in. They are super-local. he's too local to ignore for the next station that comes along.

If the performance royalty bill gets passed, you'll see a lot of new talk formats pop up as stations drop expensive music formats.
