There IS an audience for current alternative rock music, just not a huge one. Rather than going for a grand slam, how about just a singe or double. In other words, serve the core audience and you may find some success. An alternative in the vain of Indie 103 (LA), FNX (Boston) mixed in with the occassional "Classic alternative" cut from the 80's would be interesting. As I've said in a million other threads, we already have a classic rock station, a rock station that plays classic rock (K-Rock), so there really is no need for the Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, etc. cuts.

I submit there is a real money demo in the 80s modern rock crowd. Possibilities exist to mix that with Barrett-era Floyd (segued properly, of course) for instance. Maybe more currents during morning/afternoon dayparts, but Matt could really show his knowledge of the 80s 'deeper tracks'; perhaps nights could be more 'classic/deep tracks' leaning. There is a ton of good music by Classic rock staple artists ignored by classic rock radio. There's a melange there-possibly.

Bright spots: He's played the new Santogold, and Big Audio Dynamite this week.

I think the other issue vis a vis old/new music-is the appetite the record companies still have to shift units.

I am recalling that little bit Matt did at the end of that limp bizkit record...:

Hmmmm.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I was just gonna say NY needs a true alternative station like Indie 103 in LA or WFNX in Boston. Playing songs like these taken from WFNX's playlist today might work for 'RXP:

The Raconteurs - Salute Your Solution

Carolina Liar - I'm Not Over

Weezer - El Scorcho

Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child

Phantom Planet - Do The Panic

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days

The Beastie Boys - Pass The Mic

M.I.A. - Paper Planes

Erasure - A Little Respect

Oasis - Supersonic

Jack Johnson - Hope

Toad The Wet Sprocket - Walk On The Ocean

Rancid - Salvation

Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine

Playing newer interesting bands like Vampire Weekend, MGMT (from NY), Death Cab for Cutie, The Ting Tings, M.I.A. etc along with classics from the 80's and 90's would be a great fit for 'RXP.

Iggy Pop - Real Wild Child Cold Metal, Winners and Losers, Down on the Street, Some Weird Sin

Phantom Planet - Do The Panic

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days That's pop, really. Yaz would be better.

The Beastie Boys - Pass The Mic <- Paul's Boutique is a great record too.

M.I.A. - Paper Planes

Erasure - A Little Respect

Oasis - Supersonic

Jack Johnson - Hope Tonnes of underplayed Ska and reggae I would rather toss in.

Toad The Wet Sprocket - Walk On The Ocean I think of them as alt also-rans. XTC.

Rancid - Salvation <- I like them, although they ape the Clash

Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine Read About It

Pinfield played Santogold, which is a great record, I like the MIA thing too.

Actually, dump all the 'Zeppelinized' alternative bands (Pearl Jam, Creed, Bush, Nirvana) or minimize them.

Nirvana was actually mainstream with an Alt pass, and that's where the line is IMHO. Some Soundgarden is OK, but I think the Actives take care of all these bands anyway. Not sure how I feel about DCFC either...they play that already.

The The is good too...why is there a seeming absence of political songs?

Some Billy Bragg? "Levi Stubbs Tears" is a great song.

And the Wonderstuff. Great band.

Re: Wang Chung
It may be poppish, but it works for classic alt and would be a good recognizable old school new wave cut. However, I think the huge hit "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" would definitely be way too pop though.

Re: Beastie Boys
Shake Your Rump, Barrel of a Gun, Negotiation Limerick File, Root Down, Get It Together w/Q-Tip, She's Crafty and Remote Control all are great lesser known Beasties cuts that would work well.

Re: Midnight Oil
Not sure what you mean, but def would work with the classic alt audience, especially this and "The Power and the Passion"

This is just an hour or programming I took remember. Don't try to niche or pigeonhole it down that much. You don't want to alienate TOO much of the audience. And as much as you may not like Nirvana, they changed the "grunge" alternative landscape forever in the early 90's. They're pretty much essential. You can always play their lesser known cuts, like 'FNX does, such as "Something in the Way," "Pennyroyal Tea," "School," "Dive," etc. And amen to Billy Bragg, XTC and The The, they are essential. Also Peter Murphy and Bauhaus is a good addition too, along with some Psychedelic Furs. Hey why don't myself and you apply for the PD position, LOL

Correction, WFNX does NOT play lesser known cuts, unless it's in specialty programming like Leftover Lunch. Outside of that, it's a very carefully selected mix of audience tested cuts from well established bands like U2, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam. Trust me, I'd love to hear some lesser known cuts, they ain't playing them!

Sure, go for it!

One good thing. He didnt even play ONE Nickelback song this morning.

I liked the Interpol song he played around 7:15.

Not crazy about Sheryl Crow. Especially two of her songs in the space of about 90 mins.

Not crazy about G&R "Sweet Child of Mine" either.

Overall, I liked what I heard of his playlist, except noted above.

Should I review Matt's Monday playlist?

Given the exit of their PD last week, I think it might be interesting to compare and contrast today's playlist to the one from last week.

Later this evening-I have plumbers banging away at the foundation presently...a bit distracting.

LOL great, looking forward to it!

I've heard them play Santogold, MGMT and Vampire Weekend. I was surprised to find out that those groups were all from New York. I heard them played a lot in the UK, on Radio 1 in the past months. Strange to live near NYC, and have to listen to British radio to hear new bands from NYC.

MGMT's new song "Electric Feel" I really like. So far, I've heard "Time To Pretend" on RXP.

Santogold is a Philly transplant, now in Brooklyn.

MGMT, Santogold, The Kooks, Rogue Wave, The Black Kids, Vampire Weekend among others have all been in heavy rotation for the past few months on WFNX. All these bands would be great as currents on 'RXP. Glad they are starting to play them, albeit a couple months late, now is better then never.

Oh and as far as Ciao goes, don't listen to him, he has some weird fetish for bashing 'FNX in every false way possible (disgruntled ex-employee?) and now apparently goes to as many boards as he can to do it. But yet he says he listens all the time. You figure it out.

We can at least all agree that K-Rock is a much bigger snoozefest than RXP. Even your token "hawd rawk fan, dawg" is probably bored to tears by that station. I think they should do a new contest, in the theme of Where's Waldo, but instead called "Where's The Current?"

9:44 AM "PETS" - PORNO FOR PYROS - OK-Perry's has had other things out since then too.
9:40 AM "ROOTS, ROCK, REGGAE" - BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS - Why does every alt spinner insist that this is the only Reggae band along with a bunch of white UK ones that there is to choose from? How about Toots and the Maytals? Lee Perry?

8:41 AM "PUMP IT UP" - ELVIS COSTELLO - OK
8:37 AM "CHANGES" - DAVID BOWIE - pick another one
8:21 AM "LIVIN' IN THE FUTURE" - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN -sounds like an old song
8:13 AM "PICTURES OF YOU" - THE CURE - The cure gets a pass, but there are better songs
8:07 AM "COMEDOWN" - BUSH - ...like Buddy and the Big Bopper-too good for these Nirvana clones
8:02 AM "DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE" - TOM PETTY - absolutely, Tom, you-mudcrutch soundalike.
7:53 AM "MAMA KIN" - AEROSMITH - intersting (yeah, spelled wrong) How about REM's cover of 'Toys'?
7:49 AM "SNOW (HEY OH)" - RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS-Please, nothing north of Blood Sugar, mmmk? I like Frusciante being well and all, but, new cadence, please...
7:44 AM "AFTER MIDNIGHT" - ERIC CLAPTON - Eric was good in Cream, and he's boring on this track

6:38 AM "EMPTY SPACES/YOUNG LUST" - PINK FLOYD - No- "Arnold Layne", "See Emily Play"
6:33 AM "NEW YORK, NEW YORK" - RYAN ADAMS - not even 9-11 cache for this-bland
6:29 AM "PSYCHO KILLER" - TALKING HEADS- OK
6:18 AM "COME HOME" - BACK DOOR SLAM - OK, but in danger of becoming a white blues cliche
6:15 AM "JUST WHAT I NEEDED" - CARS - OK-Alt sounding pop
6:11 AM "LOSER" - BECK - Has other songs too...Odeley is a gold mine.
6:05 AM "STARMAN" - DAVID BOWIE- yes, let's go deeper
6:01 AM "BEST OF YOU" - FOO FIGHTERS - OK

Suggestion: There's a great Robert Palmer-Lee Perry remix of a song called 'Love Can Run Faster'-look it up. It's the B-side to 'Bad Case of Loving You'.
