There IS an audience for current alternative rock music, just not a huge one. Rather than going for a grand slam, how about just a singe or double. In other words, serve the core audience and you may find some success. An alternative in the vain of Indie 103 (LA), FNX (Boston) mixed in with the occassional "Classic alternative" cut from the 80's would be interesting. As I've said in a million other threads, we already have a classic rock station, a rock station that plays classic rock (K-Rock), so there really is no need for the Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, etc. cuts.

I submit there is a real money demo in the 80s modern rock crowd. Possibilities exist to mix that with Barrett-era Floyd (segued properly, of course) for instance. Maybe more currents during morning/afternoon dayparts, but Matt could really show his knowledge of the 80s 'deeper tracks'; perhaps nights could be more 'classic/deep tracks' leaning. There is a ton of good music by Classic rock staple artists ignored by classic rock radio. There's a melange there-possibly.

Bright spots: He's played the new Santogold, and Big Audio Dynamite this week.

I think the other issue vis a vis old/new music-is the appetite the record companies still have to shift units.

Actually, dump all the 'Zeppelinized' alternative bands (Pearl Jam, Creed, Bush, Nirvana) or minimize them.

Nirvana was actually mainstream with an Alt pass, and that's where the line is IMHO. Some Soundgarden is OK, but I think the Actives take care of all these bands anyway. Not sure how I feel about DCFC either...they play that already.

The The is good too...why is there a seeming absence of political songs?

Some Billy Bragg? "Levi Stubbs Tears" is a great song.

And the Wonderstuff. Great band.

It may be poppish, but it works for classic alt and would be a good recognizable old school new wave cut. However, I think the huge hit "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" would definitely be way too pop though.

Shake Your Rump, Barrel of a Gun, Negotiation Limerick File, Root Down, Get It Together w/Q-Tip, She's Crafty and Remote Control all are great lesser known Beasties cuts that would work well.

Not sure what you mean, but def would work with the classic alt audience, especially this and "The Power and the Passion"

This is just an hour or programming I took remember. Don't try to niche or pigeonhole it down that much. You don't want to alienate TOO much of the audience. And as much as you may not like Nirvana, they changed the "grunge" alternative landscape forever in the early 90's. They're pretty much essential. You can always play their lesser known cuts, like 'FNX does, such as "Something in the Way," "Pennyroyal Tea," "School," "Dive," etc. And amen to Billy Bragg, XTC and The The, they are essential. Also Peter Murphy and Bauhaus is a good addition too, along with some Psychedelic Furs. Hey why don't myself and you apply for the PD position, LOL

Correction, WFNX does NOT play lesser known cuts, unless it's in specialty programming like Leftover Lunch. Outside of that, it's a very carefully selected mix of audience tested cuts from well established bands like U2, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam. Trust me, I'd love to hear some lesser known cuts, they ain't playing them!

I liked the Interpol song he played around 7:15.

MGMT, Santogold, The Kooks, Rogue Wave, The Black Kids, Vampire Weekend among others have all been in heavy rotation for the past few months on WFNX. All these bands would be great as currents on 'RXP. Glad they are starting to play them, albeit a couple months late, now is better then never.

Oh and as far as Ciao goes, don't listen to him, he has some weird fetish for bashing 'FNX in every false way possible (disgruntled ex-employee?) and now apparently goes to as many boards as he can to do it. But yet he says he listens all the time. You figure it out.

We can at least all agree that K-Rock is a much bigger snoozefest than RXP. Even your token "hawd rawk fan, dawg" is probably bored to tears by that station. I think they should do a new contest, in the theme of Where's Waldo, but instead called "Where's The Current?"
