Ken Kohl, the ops manager, is said to hate even having sportscasts on the station. I don't know if that's true --I've heard that secondhand.

Will listeners care, or will all those Niner fans who've moved up from the Bay Area continue listening to KNBR (isn't that who has it now?) Since weekend ratings are nothing to brag about, this couldn't be any worse. Then again, football ratings are usually only as good as the team, but it's likely the Niners' fortunes will change.

If nothing else, the hype will make the station money since this is easy to sell, regardless of ratings --a prestige buy, as it were. And there's at least one thing you can bet your last transistor on: the thing management was most excited about wasn't that they got the Niner broadcasts, it's that they'd get tickets to the games, which they'll likely hoard for themselves.

I've heard the same thing as well. I would imagine the decision was made in hopes to pull the station out of the toilet.

I got an email forwarded to me by an employee at CC Sac so it looks legit.

I don't think it's a big secret that Ken's not a big fan of having sports on 1530. About as far as he'll go is having "Sports Guy" Pat Walsh as part of the morning and afternoon drive shows. And CC has made no major run at taking the Kings rights back from 1140 in his time there, though I'm sure they bid on those rights last time they came up.

But they did put the River Cats on 650 for a few years.

And this move - if true - actually makes some sense. As bad as they are now, the Niners are still "THE" Northern California sports franchise...and they're not likely to be bad forever. They're the marquee name in sports (save for the Kings locally).

And the games are nearly all on Sunday mornings or afternoons, which is not prime time, and doesn't disrupt the station's weekday schedule.

It may not be the tickets, after all. It may just be the ability to crow loudly that the station is "The Home of the 49ers".

Yeah, I'm not sure what kind of "toilet" he's talking about. Maybe in one of those fancy hotels with the gold plated flushing mechanism? :D

BTW, the deal's been announced... it's a 4 year deal.

And will be one of the only Raiders games to be seen in Sacramento this season :)

...missing NoCal, and watching via the dish in Boston

It's top dawg 12+

But is KFBK #1 in desired demos with existing programs during the times the 49'er games will be on?

Keep an eye on the breakouts to see whether it gets better or worse... and whether it all means anything to the bottom line.

Are potential Lexus buyers gonna be listening on the radio or watching in HD on that new plasma set?

Hard costs (expenses) are the board op to run the games, any technical or downlinking hardware or fees.

Revenue's going to be affected up or down by whether the games cost cash or are barter with avails, how much the station can get for local spots in-game and on pre-and-postgame shows, and what the change in available inventory does to the Sunday cash flow.

It all must have made sense to someone, or it would't be a four-year deal.

Ted.

#1 doesn't carry the same weight when you've had three down books and have gone from being a 35-55 station to a 45-65 station over the last few years. Let's put it this way: in terms of ratings, the station is far from being in the toilet (the working environment, however, is a different story), but it's closer to the sewer water than it would like to be.
The Niners will make for a good marketing hook, sell as a prestige buy and improve anemic weekend ratings. Then again, twice nothing is still nothing.

I said it before.

KFBK's biggest benefit carrying the games is when they call up their voice guy (Jim Merkle still, I believe) and have him cut the big booming liners: "KFBK, Your Home of the San Francisco 49ers!"

Heck, they could almost not run the games! Nah, that's not entirely true. They will make money off the games. All sports sell well on the radio, especially a "name" like the 49ers, which is about the only team (save for the Kings) that KFBK could command premium prices for, spot-wise.

Plus, it also gets KFBK an in for stuff like players and coaches appearing on their weekday morning and afternoon drive.

What ratings they get on Sunday afternoons - that means nothing, either before or after carrying the games. It's the prestige it lays upon the station.

Losing or moving whatever infomercial or paid talk programming they carry from 1-4 PM Sundays is quite secondary.
