Saga's Portland Problem

Direct quote from the CEO from the Saga 2nd Quarter Earnings Conference call the other day:

"Quick summary for you, a short call today. Radio. All markets are good, except Portland. We mentioned that on the last call. And we've asked management to bring the cars into the shop for an inspection. Change out and tune up. Mechanics are standing by at this moment on that."

Huh? Who decided to universally eliminate Arbitron in all markets without understanding the impact and what could happen (and did) in Portland as a result. Was it Jon Shannon, Mike Violette or Chuck Igo who made this decision? Was it even Cary? You can inspect the cars all you want. It won't change what is going on. A serious mistake was made regarding Arbitron in Portland and the result is an apparent loss of much more revenue than the nickels you'd thought you'd save.

While the Arbitron decision did have an impact, I suspect it goes deeper. It sounds as if some of the Saga stations in that cluster are programming stations o which they can't see demo specifics and other information pertinent. I suspect it goes deeper as it sounds as if bad programming decisions and some poor execution of those formats is also to blame.

He's not sitting down in front of Selector again is he??

Underminer- You probably know the inside workings of all radio groups far better than anyone, especially me. How would you rank or analyze them in terms of places to work, management, station performance/sound/promotion, personalities, etc?

I would never begin to pretend that I know more than anyone else about anything--just offering my opinion, much as you do.

BTW, if you don't think Cary sticks his fingers into the minutiae of his radio stations, you've never worked in one of his buildings. Cannot see the forest for the trees, or in this case, blades of grass.
