Salem Bustos Sacramento Surprise

Which makes me wonder....

That's pretty much my analysis. Thing is, he shelled out
half a million to buy it. Either he doesn't understand
what he's getting OR Salem made it a deal-breaker condition
to do the principal move.

At the price, I can't see a "greater fool" coming along
hungering to buy the KCEE signal all by itself. They'd
get a license that comes with no real estate, minimal
equipment and a spotty enough signal that it would take
a really great salesperson to develop much in the way
of local advertising even if they build a studio/news
operation, etc.

A real puzzle.<P ID="signature">______________

I'm guessing #2 here.

Salem put that facility on the air, and they may have been disappointed with "real world" coverage once it actually got up and running. Remember, back when they were first talking about putting KCEE on the air, it was rumored that they'd put classic country (!!!) on the stick. (Yes, Salem, running a classic country station.) That's how Joey Mitchell got involved.

At some point, they ditched the rumored classic country format, but still had Joey under contract, so they threw him on 3-6 PM live in the only non-KTKZ-simulcast programming they had on the daily schedule. The whole thing is a head scratcher, IMHO.

And you already have a strong local service competitor in the market, in the KNCO-AM/Star 94.1 operation. It's not like 830 and 94.1 are satellite fed 24/7 with no local content, and they have an enormous head start. There's not enough population up your way to have a second full-fledged competitor to them, and the 103.3 signal sure isn't the one to try it with.

It's somewhat more complicated.

You gotta consider KVMR a full-fledged competitor. NOT for
advertising; it's a non-commercial. But for audience.
The county, as a whole, is quite conservative but Nevada
City (aka 'Nirvana Silly') is heavily extreme liberal as
is the entire San Juan Ridge. I mean old-fashioned
alternative-living, 1960's hippie-dressing. That is NOT
a political judgement; it's a statement of living conditions
and mode of dress. If in doubt, spend an hour in NC.
No criticism intended...damn I'm defensive today...it just
indicates that KNCO is not getting a free ratings ride.

The county, being conservative, is cool with Rush on KNCO
and the morning local news (decent) and, in season, school
closings. BUT KCEE's morning talk could have eaten their
lunch IF Salem had promoted it. But they didn't and many
folks never even knew the station existed. It was strong
enough, though, that it inspired some local school system
political moves and generated a lot of controversy. Thing
is, not enough of the 'inspired' people talked about how
they came to be inspired. There was some local sales
effort which met with what I'd call limited success.

I really feel that KNCO would be vulnerable to a smart
competitor but the KCEE anemic signal is not the tool
with which to do it.

Somehow, deep inside, I gotta believe Bustos was forced
into buying it and will either use it as a de-facto
repeater or try to sell it off, even at a loss. If he
pushes the envelope on just repeating I could see the
potential for a challenge at renewal time but somebody
would have to have an ideological agenda or be
exceedingly stupid to put any money into it.<P ID="signature">______________
