Salem State suspends D.J.?

raccoonradio said:
The latest: the show IS back with original hosts, including me. The previous host has been removed due
to various infractions.

Hey raccoon, congrats, that is just great. I have always enjoyed your show (when I can manage to pull it in)... which isn't too often... :(

The Juke Joint is a great show. I'm a loyal listener who lurks on a variety of boards. Haven't checked this one in awhile.

We were all very upset when Henry Bellows went on the air and said he had a new show on
Sunday - "Mellow Down Easy" - when people are used to hearing a genre of music - say Carter Alan's
Sunday Morning Blues - one expects to hear that programming.

Being a listener I didn't know there was something going on at WMWM. pretty shocking. Good luck to all of you and please play some John Lee Hooker. Does anyone have the Canned Heat show on WBCN when
Little Richard was supposed to appear but never did? Could you play the Canned Heat / WBCN broadcast.
It goes way back but it is legnendary. I'd like to hear it on The Juke Joint.

Thanks--I do have a cass. here recorded off WBCN of Canned Heat appearing with members of
the J. Geils Band, circa '72...have played snippets of that before. That may be it--in fact one of them
finishes up by quoting Hank Williams IIRC, "we'll be back if the good Lord's willin' and the creek don't
rise"--and Chuck Laquidara later adopted that as part of his daily farewell (amended to "if the earth
don't fry, if the sun don't die" or something like that)

Henri helped us for 4 years but his rude behavior toward others created tension at the station (among
other infractions). Being at the station is a privilege and not a right and the college stepped in to
remove him. I do thank him for the help of the past 4 years and wish him well...I hope he mellows
down easy instead of really blowin' his top, as the blues lyric goes. Peter and I hope to bring a few
other DJs in to offer a wide variety of blues.

Eventually he added "...and if there ain't no meltdown" to it.

Good luck with the rejuvenated show. I occasionally catch parts of it when in I'm range. Sometimes literally parts of it, as it may come in all broken up (or all chopped up, whichever...) as I drive around greater Boston, but sometimes I strain to hear the Juke Joint, and Uncle Henry's Basement.

It's always awkward when a college station has to suspend someone, especially an older community person. WMBR has also had to do it over the past few years. I don't mean just canceling someone's show due to programming issues (which were sometimes unfairly arbitrary under some past managements a few years ago), but banning someone from the premises due to obnoxius, rude, harmful or destructive behavior, either on or off the air. It's sad, and usually the person is in denial of his own actions and blames the station, everyone else, and the world for what's happening to them, and there's nothing else you can do.

That sounds like the case with Henri; I tried to warn him, "Be nice to people. Just come in and do
your show and don't get into trouble" and "there's such a thing as progressive discipline--a harsher
punishment for repeat offenders" and that is just what happened. He held grudges and would not
take my advice. There were other things he MAY have done (we wondered if he was asking companies
for CDs then either giving them away or selling them, but I don't know if that was true or not. Someone
claims it may have been the case. It's inexcusable if so.) Apologizing and giving forgiveness are
important; had I acted the way he did I would have apologized and forgiveness would have been
extended. I am the type to wish him well in whatever he does, but the fact is that what he was doing
was beyond tolerable. (He would not apologize and we felt he would just keep doing it.)

And thanks for listening to the show and other WMWM shows too (we also have interesting stuff
after Uncle Henry's, like that Sat 9-mid slot that has rotation of rockabilly/classic r&b blues/songs
based on a theme, hosted by Jimmy R., Doug Edwards, and Mike S. respectively

This isn't only a problem at college radio. If anyone here is active in town politics or sports you will find irritating malcontents, especially in the sports world. My twin sons play for a variety of sports teams and we have to be extra cautious because the troublemakers usually hold the purse strings. In one city (do a google) the person in question filed defamation suits against the parents who reported him. It is usually the self-appointed "President" - the one with the power - who has to be watched most closely.

Jump Steady was hardly the best jock - and we tune in for the music, it if is a good personality on the air, that's a plus. Yes, a d.j. has to have a certain amount of ego (more so than the president of a Pop Warner team should have, for sure), but it must always be about the music.

WMWM is lucky that the college took any action. Some colleges, and many cities and towns, let this stuff fester for years before they take action, with dire consequences. Just read the Tufts Daily to see how poorly
Tufts University handles matters

Tufts has recently had incidents of embezzlement (on Tufts Daily 11/27 "When the university announced 12 days ago that Office of Student Activities Director Jodie Nealley had been fired due to allegations that she embezzled an estimated $300,000 from Tufts, ), more than just marijuana abuse, and a radio station that had students tie the antenna to the railroad tracks directly behind the station.

The university didn't act quickly - or act at all in some cases, so Salem State should be commended for being relatively swift about the action and removing the troublemaker. How long was Mr. Bellows part of the station? and why did it take this long? At least they removed him.

Number of students caught with marijuana has increased this fall

4 or 5 years...it may have taken so long because we tried to put up with it but it got to be too much
and actions within the past couple weeks really made it necessary. (That is, it took awhile for us
to get tired of it but the college acted quickly once complaints started to pour in.)
Pete Cahill (the other co-host with me) was talking to me and saying the last 6 months with Henri
were just too much to tolerate, etc. We wish him well and who knows, maybe he will catch
on elsewhere
