San Francisco/San Jose Arbitron Ratings: April 2013

San Francisco: http://mobile.****************/cgi-bin/rolmobi.exe/arb009
San Jose: http://mobile.****************/cgi-bin/rolmobi.exe/arb215

Overall age 6+ publicly released data is for the April 2013 survey period covering Thu. 3/28/13-Wed. 4/24/13.
Next survey period will be May 2013 (covering Thu. 4/25/13-Wed. 5/22/13) with the data release date being Mon. 6/10/13.

Sad to see that Live 105's "reboot" hasn't given them any upward momentum; they're actually down a tick. Amazing what the beginning of baseball season did for the Knibber.

Time for a Spring Purge at KGO. Maybe we can fix weekends this time out. Then again ... the names of tomorrow's breed of great Bay Area legacy on the Big 810 will be? (Pick a few.) Who among the newsies to go as well?

Well, Live spent the past two books in the top five 18-34, but you're right, the momentum appears to be laying off.

I'm trying to figure out where the 3 share points of KNBR listeners come from during baseball season. I don't see any significant drop beyond a 0.2 for KCBS. The 3 points have to be coming from *somewhere* -- but where?

Perhaps KNBR is picking up small numbers of listeners from all other stations. There's nothing like a World Series winning team to bring out the "sports fan" in people who are usually apathetic about their hometown team. I've run into more Giants "fans" since last October than I could possibly count.

I'll bet the Warriors (also KNBR) are surging right now, too.

Wow, didn't realize that was the case. That explains why CBS hasn't pulled the plug, but still, if you're Top 5 in that demo but NOBODY ELSE listens, there's gotta be a limit to how much you can bill, unless this is one of those CBS-sells-them-as-a-bundle-with-Alice things.

18-34 is definitely a buying demo, and many campaigns targeting 25-54 or 18-49 will pick stations from the lower end, the middle and the upper demo end to complement each other... so being strong in 18-34 can generate decent sales. A good example of this would be CHRs which focus on 18-34 women, yet get great billing.

Most of KITS' audience is 25-34, with not much else. It's revenues are off about 65% from the pre-recession years. And its power ratio is about 0.63. We can fairly accurately assume that there has to be some concern for the performance of the station, but the big question I would ask is why the power ratio is so low.

And The Game continues to flat line, how much longer can this go on?

As long as Entercomm wants to piss away dollars. Just about anything else would do better than the Game at this point. After almost 2 years, they're still essentially in the same spot. I hope for the sake of the A's and Raiders, they have a plan B. Entercomm could save their cash on the local "talent" and just simulcast ESPN Radio when the A's and Raiders aren't playing. Would anyone really notice a difference?

Entercom managers think they know how to program sports radio. They also thought they knew how to program country in San Francisco. Ratings and revenue don't seem to matter.

Well, they did know how to program modern rock. They were the originators of KITS Live 105.

I'm sure 95.7 would be waaaay more sucessful as a true active rocker. Probably would also cost Entercom a lot less. Any thoughts on KFOX's decline?

Could that format be losing momentum in general?

I think that's the case. In 1987, the cool kids were listening to Live 105. Today's cool kids are listening to Now and Wild. And last I heard in the halls of CBS SF, Live 105 is definitely treated as the uncool aged-out cousin.

Steve Masters was wandering around BFD yesterday interviewing people and the number of people AT A LIVE 105 EVENT who didn't know that Live 105 was sponsoring the show (!), or who didn't even know there was a station called Live 105 (!!) was just mind-blowing.

Steve Masters...is he collecting Social Security yet?

It's frightening that time moves on, but it does. We try to hang onto it, but it slips away. As adults we're doing things that commercial broadcasters don't like: we're sticking to brands we like, and we're content with the purchases we made 5 and 10 years ago. I have a 19 year old car. I'm definitely not a target for Toyota, Lexus, or Subaru. I've found my buds, but they don't drink Budweiser and won't switch to it even if buxom blondes lay cans across their boobs.
