Santos Unprofessional "Freak Out" on air

FPB said:
I share his politics, but actually, I don't like the guy, and this is not the first time I've said that. That he has any audience at all is due to the fact that he's the only progressive voice available on traditioinal radio. Any morning competition and he'd be gone.

"the only reason he's in radio is because he's buying time"
OK. The only reason why Howie Carr is in radio is because he got chummy with Jerry Williams.
So... what's your point? People have followed all kinds of paths getting into radio.
The only reason Samantha Clemens is in radio is because she's buying time. And you think she's pretty good.

Jeff buys that time, not Samantha, get your facts straight please. Any progressive talk on the station is brokered by Jeff. And Howie Carr is a HIRED radio talent (I am using the word talent in it's literal sense here, I know many folks will feel he is in no way talented, but I digress) and Jeff is not, that's all I'm saying here. Howie also established himself in another medium, which Jeff never has, at least not in this market. Just pointing out some obvious differences (aside from ratings & billing, of course).

Samantha used to be a regular on Feinberg's show on WRKO a few years back and had another show on 91.5, not sure whether that was a time buy or not. It still gives her more radio experience than Santos. Where I agree with out is that it's really sad for lefties that that's all they have to listen to to get something from their viewpoint.

"Santos (or any radio show) is under no obligation to take callers. It's a risk too many hosts get burned on. Especially if the caller(s) is smarter than you. So long as the show is filled with informative topics and guests, callers should be reserved only as fill. Seriously. If your format is so weak you need the audience to supply the programming, you need to switch formats."

I agree! Especially because plenty of callers are boring. I so agree with this. If you count on callers and you don't get any, then you start off with a hole in your show.

91.5 WMFO is an all-volunteer non-commercial non-profit college/community station that does not sell airtime. She did her show there as a community volunteer.

I understood that Clemens was buying the time from Santos. So you're suggesting that he bought the time and hired her? That comes as a suprise. Thanks for letting me know.

I understand that Carr is hired. Santos can't be hired because he is the principal of his own company. You were suggesting that there is some sort of negative qualitative inference in Santo's entrance into radio.

Santos can and should be judged according to his performance, but not because of how he began his career.

The point is some people are on the radio because they are well received by the public. Some are there simply for vanity, ego...or "the cause".
Cannot simply beginning a new radio endeavor be a justification for being on the radio?

Ya mean if you look hard enough within the radio industry you MIGHT find people who are there to stroke their vanity? REALLY?? I'm sure that has to be VERY RARE! :-\

Yes, but at some point, the training wheels have to come off, and you have to be able to stand on your own.

I happened to tune in today to get the perspective from the losing party and heard an interview Santos was doing with a woman just after 8am. I believe she was a doctor and do not recall her name, any way, she was a scheduled guest as it seems where Santos gave her this great big intro and they spoke about healthcare. Well she eventually let on that she was going to vote for Scott Brown and Santos seemed to be completely caught off guard by this and he freaked out on air, going as far as telling her not to vote at all...(Liberal Tactics)
I listened further where they took a break and then did a sports update in which he joined in at the end and you could tell in the tone of his voice that he was still upset that someone not voting for a democrat was allowed on his show. Another very long break was taken and when he came back on he went on to say that the woman was no longer welcome on his station.

Santos convinced me today that he's even that much more of an unprofessional cry baby than he is a bad radio host!

Wonder if he fired his producer for that mistake?

I was listening as well. He was taken aback at the idea that a progressive like her who is upset that the prospecitve health care bill as it stands will not be progressive enough would vote for Brown.

Yes that was very self defeating and not well thought out. I also work in the medical field which is THE most F'ed up field in this country, and I'm so far left on this issue, that it's single payer or nothing for me and I still voted for Coakley. A little bit is better than none. I do not agree with legislating people to have to buy insurance though, that was a give away to the insurance companies.

Same amount of time it took for your "REALLY?" comment.

WEEI has some talented and funny callers. So does Howie with his Chumpline etc (which btw may have spawned yet another imitator, Michael Graham's Confession Line? I still think Howie's chumpline was inspired by Alan
Colmes' Radio Graffiti but Colmes did it live, not recorded...

I think Sean Hannity with his "Hannity's Insanity" invented that format. I liked one time Colmes did "Radio Graffiti" on his old WEVD/New York show, right around the time both he and Hannity would begin hosting a show on Fox News. A caller repeatedly got through and heckled Colmes, saying, "This is NOT Hannity's Insanity... Sean Hannity rules..." No wonder WEVD ceases to exist today.
