Savannah: RIP Mix 102.1

Confirmed....Mix is dead. Hooray! 102.1 is currently stunting with famous clips from sporting events. 3PM on Monday, it will go all sports.

I still firmly believe this is a HUGE waste of Cumulus' most powerful Savannah frequency. But, since they're hell bent on doing things on the cheap, well ok. I expect to see UGA move here from sister I95. Who knows what will become of the sports programming on sister AM 900. So who else will come over? Jaguars maybe, as this is the first year they are not represented on Savannah's airwaves, despite being in their home market.

But you have a class C0 stick, 99kw at 1400+", and it's sports. This seems oh so silly to me.

You are absolutely correct! What a waste of a great signal. BUT, just because they're stunting sports doesn't mean that's the real plan.

Well my rumor source proved to be right as this legendary, huge signal dumps tunes for locker room chat.
Amazing.
Give the CC guys some major credit on this one. For almost 5 years they beat the old Z102 in a straight up CHR war and then when Cumulus shifted to Hot AC as Mix 102 almost 2 years ago, Clear Channel evolved their AC, The River 98.7, a hair younger and then seemed to take a safer music approach to their dominant CHR 97.3 Kiss. Mix 102 was left standing outside with no position and no audience.

Now CC Market Manager Craig Scott and OM Steve Richards have to be amazed but happy to know their two contemporary brands are the only viable choices for non-urban, non-rock and non-country listeners in either Hilton Head or Savannah.

This was a shocker!

But then it's Clueless...would you expect anything less than stupid moves?

Cumulus tried FM Sports Talk on a high power stick in Cincinnati-Dayton and couldn't make it work and Cincy even HAS professional sports in town.

If they flip 102.1 to sports...well...I can't imagine if it wouldn't sell in a REAL sports market; how will it sell in Savannah?

Excellent point, as Savannah isn't even a sports town!

The stunt seems awfully predictable. ESPN Sportcenter music bed underneath a half-hour of sports clips from the past 80 years and the Mix 102-1 VO guy saying "Get in the game, starting at 3pm Monday, on WZAT" (NOTE: Not even a proper ID!)

Now their cards are on the table. They're putting ESPN on 102.1. If they weren't, I would imagine Adventure Radio and ABC/Disney would have a cow since the Sportcenter music is playing...other websites are saying ESPN-specific and other websites have been booked by Cumulus.

So, now that the cat is out of the bag, where does this leave 1130 in terms of format? Did Cumulus allow them to take Fox Sports Radio, will they go Sporting News Radio, or maybe a totally different talk or music format (old WLOW?)

Big loss for the metro area, having 102.1 switch to sports. I don't know why, but kind of a dumb move. What are you going to do with it? Get a 1.5 every time?

WSPO is lucky to get a 1 share as the highest sports station in Charleston. What will WZAT do?

(NOTE: Not even a proper ID!)

Note....there is a proper legal ID that runs every 20 minutes

Anything is better than the John Tesh & billy bush show they had on there, Smooth Jazz would have been better than sports, but anything is better than what was on there...

OK, I'm sure the stunt has changed then. Friday when I listened it was just that one VO announcement and that was it. Glad to see that's working now...even though 106.1 had about a 6 month period when they went as "WFXH-FM Savannah/Hilton Head"

I'm sure you're busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest, Robert, and I doubt corporate or personal policy will allow you to confirm or deny the stunt.

However, any idea on how the stunt is broadcast? is it just repeated on the automation system or did somebody mix it down to a CD and just hit "repeat"?

And will the stereo be turned off? I'd imagine this would prevent any listening issues in downtown Savannah or on Hilton Head where the signal is...not weak...but dips out briefly.

A shame this question should even be asked.....

I heard that montage today, and it is unique, as I heard things that I hadn't heard on the radio before, like Brett Favre's clinching pass, the App State blocked field goal, and other things. I live just S of Charleston, so it was weak, but you could hear it.

Their audio feed is still playing on mix1021.com for those who want to hear the stunting.

Random updates:

Something is amiss at ESPN 1130. Daytime coverage was definietly heard all last night as I usually can't get the signal off the island after dark. Picked it up all around Beaufort County last night with bleeding from flamethrower country KWKH 1130 in Louisiana underneath. No TOH ID, but oddly enough had all commercials and "ESPN Radio 1130 Hilton Head" liners still intact.

When I checked the signal about 30 minutes ago during dusk I still picked up a remarkably strong signal in Jasper County. Not sure what is going on over there, but we will find out in a short time, I reckon.

My guess is 1130 retains a sports format (Sporting News Radio) or maybe a talk format. Either way, I don't see it being very viable as a radio station for much longer...the land could probably fetch more than the station is worth, anyway.

Also, lots of issues with the 1130 website. None of the "on air now" graphics will load.

The 1130 signal has been home to easy listening and talk (as WHHR-AM) until the 90's. I'm guessing ESPN Radio has been on ever since...

Now the only question I have is could ESPN permit BOTH 1130 and 102.1 to use the ESPN Radio feed? Since they are separate markets and 102.1 will likely clobber 1130 in both books, I'd imagine ESPN would care less about the AM station...and Cumulus may not have much to stand on since it is a separate market with (technically) separate stations.

The switch is getting ready to happen at 3 o'clock. I wonder what will happen. I bet you they get ESPN so they can air the baseball playoffs, especially the Braves.

I do agree that this probably isn't the smartest idea, but I'm sure it'll sound better than Mix 1021 (John Tesh and Bob and Sheri, plus that music? ::) ), and cost them very little to run. If Mix 102 was the best they could do with a music format, then this is a good change...

BTW: y'all think Savannah radio is bad, come to Greenville, SC where most of the stations sound stale and the market hasn't had change in years! At least Savannah sees some format changes/action, good or bad. Greenville has been stagnant for years...no change isn't always a good thing.

ESPN it is. I wonder whether the station will air ESPN exclusively, or if they will take advantage of other sources for live sports, etc. It will be interesting to see what develops. I wish them luck with their flip.

Well, I definitely hear sports talk. I didn't catch the flip.

The fip was really routine: straight from the promo loop to the network feed with no preamble or flourish. It's a good signal where I am in Rincon with no noise or dropouts or anything of the sort.

Stereo pilot is turned off. Good signal all around Beaufort County with no dropouts unlike before. My car stereo still has a difficult time seeking for the station but the noise level is very low so it sounds solid everywhere.

Anybody tell me if 1130 and 900 are playing the same formats as before? I'm away from an actual radio right now...
