Save your pennies for the Emmis garage sale

It's surprising that yesterday's news about Emmis possibly putting WRXP up for sale is eliciting a collective yawn around here. Maybe it's because...

1. We've heard this kind of thing before, since before it was RXP even?

2. No company has the $$ to make a purchase in NYC, even at today's bargain basement prices?

3. It's more fun to dredge up Pulse 87?

4. RXP doesn't play the New York Dolls often enough to be worth buying?

5. We *are* talking about it, but a dentist is deleting our posts?

The HD2 is where the "save your pennies" part comes in. ;D

With speculation about not only WRXP being sold, but WOR (to Clear Channel as a possible future home of Rush Limbaugh et al.) as well, it would be a damn letdown if nothing happened. It's all a matter of who pulls the trigger first.

CC has a dilemma in NY. They have five FM stations that are doing well. Power 105.1 is the lowest rated, but it serves a purpose which is to keep Lite-FM in 1st place by fragmenting Hot 97's audience. Hot hasn't topped the ratings since Power launched in 2002. IMHO, CC can't get a better rating if they blow up Power and replace it with Rush Radio 105.1. Hot 97 would regain most of the numbers they lost, putting pressure on Lite.

CC's other option is to purchase WOR and flip it to Rush Radio 710. Beck and C2C are presently on the station. CC cannot be a player for 101.9 as they already own five FM stations in NY. In every other market where CC flipped to Rush Radio, they already owned a bottom-feeding station ripe for a format flip. Not the case in NY.

The last scenario is that CC would have to make some kind of deal to keep Rush and Sean on Citadel stations, such as WABC. CC probably can't afford to purchase WOR and Citadel can't afford to pay CC for Rush and Sean! That's a Catch-22!

CC can't come to the Emmis garage sale. Can anybody say 101.9 ESPN-FM? :)

I'm going to say something most of you would expect to hear from me: Pulse 101.9

Why not?

Because it would garner an even lower share of listeners than 'RXP currently does. The PPM doesn't reward ultra-niche formats like Dance.

Who said it would have to be ultra-niche? :)

First off, as much as I am CHEERING HARD for a dance station in our brand to return to NYC, NEVER call it "Pulse". A new station HAS to have its own identity and brand and should NOT be associated with "the past". To be honest, what PartyFM was doing made SENSE because when you get down to it, what's more important than a fan base is advertisers supporting the station, especially major CORPORATE brands...not just tanning salons, drug stores or "thicker is better". Yeah, Pulse had a million listeners at a peak but NO major brand advertising there. Yes, one can say the signal, one can say the low dial position....TRUE. But to put something like this on a 101.9 would be a better indicator of performance. Forget the PPM's so as long as a profit is being made somehow. Bottom lline.

BUT...this time around, I have to say that if a new station were to appear on 101.9 and it had pop and certain aspects of rhythmic/hip-hop in there, so as long as you had CURRENT based dance music blended in....then just SHUT UP and enjoy it.

Do not complain...DO YOU HEAR ME NICK!!!! DO NOT COMPLAIN!

Of course I'm not going to complain, I learned after Party FM left 87.7. Even if it sounds like Mix HD2 in Baltimore sounded in January, I won't complain :)

Classic Country 101.9... Could happen ;)

With the demos that will be unattractive to New York City, might as well flip it to Pulse. :D

Dance, country, 50s-70s oldies, lighter-than-Lite AC, alternative rock, I'd be happy if it flips to anything that isn't heard on other stations.

Obviously, I would want a dance contemporary station on 101.9 (and if you're all shocked by that, I have a bridge to sell in Brooklyn!) ;)

The deal is this.....yeah, we made noise about Pulse 87 and the station did have a million listeners at a point. Yet there was no "corporate" sponsor during that peak, and being that the station was at a low dial position with a crappy signal, you really couldn't get a "read" per se on the potential success of such a format; instead all of the naysayers bashing it in one way or another being hypercritical about whether our brand of dance should even BE on the radio dial, because as I've heard countless times over and over and over....."IT'S TOO NICHE!"

Let's put out some truths here. Yeah, Pulse 87 was our "dance" station (note the quotes), but at the same time "rhythmic" music was interspersed into the format (Flo Rida, Sean Kingston, just to name a few; and - because someone is GOING to say it so let me throw some "cold water" here - this was happening even AFTER the Star & Buc Wild show left.)

If anything, a NEW station should go that route, and I'll "go there" and say add a little bit of hythmic/hip-hop....NOT to the point where the station is another Hot 97 or Power 105.1, but some. We NEED that crowd in there and lately that crowd has been leaning towards dance in that sense. Say what you want about PartyFM, but they knew this. :) . At this point we need exposure because, based on the tirades in the recent past (when Pulse left and PartyFM came in on 87.7), we don't have much of a "leg" to stand on by saying that we want a PURE DANCE station. Radio is a business and the bottom line, bills and staff need to get paid.

For markets like NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Chicago, to name a few of the big markets, a strong leaning dance friendly station (and yes, interspersed with a small dose of the rhythmic/hip-hop) will work. For smaller markets, strong CHR's that are "dance friendly" will be helpful (like K-104 in Poughkeepsie and Fun 107 in Fairhaven/New Bedford, MA) in terms of exposure for our music.

Okay DToTheJ, MarcR and wgilradio...blast me. I'm ready :)

Well, if a new station does come, or if 92.3 tweaks to add some current dance (not to mention they extended the saturday night dance factory) no one cant moan or complain about "bringing pulse back" or "this is not dance" etc. Something is better than nothing.

It would be a shame to see RXP go so often, especially with all the growth they've been experiencing. Alternative needs to find a way to stay in New York
