Say "Adios" to "Ugly Betty!"

MarcB said:
It used to be on Thursdays. A friend of mine hosted a Sports-Music Trivia Show at a bar in suburban Philly. His ad poked fun that coming to his show on Thursday Nights would be better than watching a show with Ugly in the title.

Anyway, why doesn't the ABC brass move the show to ABC Family on Tuesdays? Replace one hour of that stupid 4 hour block of America's Funniest Videos that airs on Tuesdays and fridays.

The show has too many stars (Vannessa Williams, America Ferrera...she comes in movies sometimes) that likely wouldn't take pay cuts to continue on with the show, on cable. Also, ABC Family is very kiddy or tween, and then just leads to The 700 Club.

Perhaps Salma Hayek should have guest starred more, to pump some life in it when it was on Thursday.

To steal a line from Bob & Tom,

Ugly Betty in HD..."uglier betty".

Nice.

I wonder if the cancellation of "Ugly Betty" is a precursor to the fortunes of the Coyote Ugly bar chain. Hope this doesn't mean last call for them!

Kinda like that "how will this affect Q100" meme on the Atlanta radio board...

The show was based on a Spanish telenovela titled "Betty La Fea" hence the title.

Funny thing is, I actually preferred the American version to the Spanish Version.

I watched it once. Never could get into it, like anything else I've seen on ABC in the past 9 years.

Me too. I can't think of the last show I watched on ABC on a regular basis. Growing up it was the network that had most of the good shows I watched. Network TV is pretty grim or maybe at my age I have seen it all before.

Ugly Betty? Never could get past the very negative name.

And I could never get past Conan's hair...and I was told very clearly on another thread that I shouldn't be judging a show if I couldn't get past the star's ridiculous haircut. So, I throw out the same challenge here. If you don't like the title, why are you even commenting on this thread?

Wow looks like a case of "Leno Logic"! ;D

Yes, Mike, you got it!! :D

I dunno, for some strange reason, I actually liked Ugly Betty. In particular, I liked when it forcused on Betty's relationships and her family. I think I like Wilhelmina just because that was the name of my Grandmother's best friend when I was growing up! ;D

Okay now I feel bad. :'( Wilhelmina was my Mom's name. Maybe she was to blame, I don't think she would have liked Betty being called ugly either. When the song "Hang on Sloopy" came out she thought it was awful. She thought they were saying "Hang on Stupid", no it's SLOOPY Mom. I still think of that whenever I hear the song! :)

This was my favorite show. Betty won me over from the first time I heard her speak. Depsite the braces, that smile just shined through, and what an amazing personality she had. And I never really thought she was ugly. Without the glasses or the braces, America is a pretty girl. Even on the show Betty is pretty without the glasses. But I always liked Betty's clothes.

Betty could solve any problem. She really ran that company. Without her there would be no Mode today.

And there were so many great characters. Amanda and Marc insulting Betty and everyone and everything. Great chemistry. Marc and Wilhelmina. Perfect together. It amazed me Marc didn't like being Wilhelmina's lackey, because he was so perfect at it. And Wilhelmina was so evil, in the tradition of J.R. Ewing and Alexis Colby (I only saw a few episodes of "Dynasty").

Yes, I had a crush on Betty, but Alexis and Hilda were hot. Wilhelmina's hot for her age.

I enjoyed the family scenes too.

This will be such a loss.

And growing up I thought it was Hang on STOOPIE. And the song Mr. Sandman I thought it was "Bring me a drink."

I'm glad some others have problems understanding song lyrics! :D

Don't feel bad... I thought at first listen, the song was called "Hang On Snoopy."

I'm going to fight the Red Baron now...

So, if you're keeping score at home, now you'll get "Cougar Town," followed by "Happy Town."

While Ugly Betty's move from Friday at 8, to Wednesday at 10, was an upgrade, it was interesting that Betty was placed as a 10pm, esp. following Cougar Town. Think of a PGish show, following a much more adult themed show.

I'm thinking ABC felt that slot was free (as Eastwick was canned), so use it, and it'd be safer on the numbers if Betty competed against Jay Leno, than a possible American Idol.

Atleast ABC is giving the show the chance to finish off, rather than burn off in the summer.

I also wonder if Cougar Town is doing well, just as a timeslot success, as it follows the very funny Modern Family, and some post Friends curiosity for Courteney Cox. Or people actually like the show.

"Cougar Town" doesn't belong in the slot. It needs some offensive comedies or dramas around it. "Scrubs" or "Better Off Ted" are much more adult than "Modern Family" and "The Middle" and might have been better matches. I liked Courteney Cox a lot and she looks incredible, especially in bikinis or underwear or whatever, but I despised all the other characters and just couldn't stand the show eventually.

I enjoyed the first two seasons of the show. And, of course, when it debuted "Ugly Betty" was the hip flavor of the month. But as happens with even the best shows, the hipness factor wore off.

I could smell trouble when the producers announced that they were moving production to New York. Granted, the setting for the show is NYC but when a producer feels the need to move production to another location to give the show, what they think would be, 'greater dimension' it usually means the show is losing its edge and audience. So far, none of the CSI shows have been moved to the cities where the shows are set.

I've seen the Columbian original of "Ugly Betty" and, frankly, its enduring popularity eludes me. But then, I'm not Hispanic.
