Schultz moving to noon, vs. Franken, Limbaugh

The Jones' syndicated Ed Schultz is moving his show to noon Eastern, head to head against Franken and
Limbaugh (O'Reilly too). Will Franken indeed leave his show to run for Senate? Some feel Thom Hartmann
was to get that slot, and maybe he will depending on what goes on with Air America. Maybe some progtalk stations would like to run both Franken
and Schultz and could take one live and do the other tape delayed.

http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Ed_Schultz_show_to_move_headtohead_1130.html

"Two radio insiders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the move. Both characterized the decision to move The Ed Schultz Show from drive-time to early afternoon as one intended to bolster a rapidly growing national audience. The decision to move Schultz to noontime eastern could put another nail in the coffin of Air America, which filed for bankruptcy Oct. 13."

Will AAR basically become a syndicator rather than a "network"? In addition to AAR and Jones other syndicators/
"networks" loom on the horizon for liberal talk. Maybe you'll have stations simply rebranding themselves as
"Progressive Talk (Freq.)" and they'll carry shows from the different syndicators, rather than ID-ing
as "Air America" on air or on websites (the logo) etc.

This'll be great news for Randi Rhodes, who currently gets delayed 3 hours on most progressive talk affiliates who carry Schultz.

How will this help him? Most PT stations aren't live/local in the morning let alone in PMD. And I'd say Hannity is more vulnerable than Rush, especially considering Schultz's rather centrist views. Considering that I'm unaware of any PT station that doesn't carry him (except in markets where there are two), it seems while he may increase TSL, all he'll do is lose listeners. Stu Krane is right that noon-3 is a good spot for syndication but Hannity and Dr. Laura aren't exactly nobodies from 3-6pm. If he didn't already have 100 stations being on in a difficult daypart to clear it would make sense. And I can only imagine the whiplash PT listeners must have when stations are forced to change their lineups every three weeks because some syndicator, mostly AAR, decides to reshuffle their offerings.

The bottom line: progressive talk is unlistenable to all but true blue liberals after 3pm ET, save Lionel, when no one's listening anyway.

Interesting point

Oh, just another right-winger venting

Amazing how I just got blasted on the Houston board for "liberal positions"... no one paid any attention to that. Surprise, surprise.

Randi Rhodes may be talented, but she's wearing thin in many places and is getting moved further and further back. Outside of her, there is no widely distributed talent. Maddow and the Nightly AAR Sightseeing Tour of One-Hour Shows - yawn.

In today's Chicago Sun Times:

In anticipation of a shakeup at the liberal Air America Radio -- including an uncertain future for top star Al Franken -- Chicago's progressive talk station is revamping its weekday lineup of syndicated programs.
Effective Dec. 11, WCPT-AM (850) will air Bill Press from sign-on to 8 a.m., newly added Stephanie Miller from 8 to 11 a.m., Ed Schultz from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Franken on tape-delay from 2 to 5 p.m., and Randi Rhodes on tape-delay from 5 p.m. to sign-off.

I believe that this will be a stronger line up but of course even the strongest schedule can not obviate the obvious problems of: 1) rim shot signal 2) a daytimer and 3) reduced power during critical hours that makes hearing the station during this time of the year at 4:00PM difficult at best for much of the area. It's a wonder that they get the audience that they do.

in Boston (see http://www.bostonradiowatch.com), in "a week's time" (so, Dec 4? Dec 11?) AAR Boston
(1200/1400) will make one change: Replacing Al Franken with Thom Hartmann. They are still doing Schultz
but instead of giving him the noon slot, he stays at 3 pm via a Jones re-feed.

Sorry about the political attack. However, your point that "progressive talk is unlistenable after 3pm" was a bit extreme. I agree that the one hour wonders on AAR are not very good, but to write off Randi, the third most listened to lib talker (after Schultz and soon to depart Franken) appears to me more an expression of your personal interest rather than reality. I also agree that the jury is still out on Maddow. I personally don't like her show.

Baroosk is a bonafide expert in bringing in his opinions and qualifying them as 'fact', then pointing the finger at 'right wingers' and trying to marginalize thier opinions.

When called to task on such statements, he fights a losing battle until he finally relents and admits he does not have a clue.

Feel sorry for this individual. His Broadway follies 'Air America' just got cancelled ( still looking for a backer, Bialystock? ), the star ( Franken ) is off to do community theater in Minnesota, and the whole review never won a Tony. Expect bitterness. ::)

I don't know why you wasting so much time attacking me personally. I didn't "relent," I just decided to stop arguing with you and your buddy RR when you attacks started to get too personal.

Yes, AAR is deep doo doo, and Franken is probably gone (good riddance). However, the future of Lib Talk is still very bright IMHO

Again, nothing wrong with Randi from where I sit, although I listen less than in the past, but when you get moved from PMD or evening fringe to late night scrub duty in San Francisco, DC, and a few smaller markets, it's not because PDs are banking on a sudden uptick in listenership at 10pm.

attacking me personally.

Yeah, I guess asking someone to back up or explain what he says is "personal".

Unless you're the one doing it.

Franken is done....Schultz will get crushed by Rush. Don't let the election fool you into believing the country has turned into "commie loving flower children."

15 million people, or about 7% of the 12+ U.S. population cumes Rush for part of a QH, or more, on a weekly basis. Schultz may not do better, but this notion that you need to have a 51% or greater majority in an election to get 10, 5, or even 2% of those voters to listen to you is silly.

This is all good news for Randi who will be cleared live in a lot more markets, and despite the nonsense without facts from some, Randi Rhodes is right up there among the most important libtalkers. She's far more talented than Ed Schultz muddle-to-the-middle, but Ed's got a place too. He's probably considerably more popular in the western states, where his politics seems to have formed. Randi plays far better on the coasts and among the true believers. Her show works best as afternoon drive, not tape delayed into later evenings.

If Franken does go, it's easy breezy scheduling for libtalk stations:

Morning drive/Bill Press/Young Turks first thing
Stephanie Miller (9-12 ET)
Ed Schultz (12-3p ET)
Randi Rhodes (3-6p ET)
Evening news block/Rachel Maddow (6-7/8p)
Thom Hartmann (8-10/11p)
Lionel or Mike Malloy taking you into late night....

I think Bill Press will dominate the morning drive segment, especially if AAR deflates. Also I wouldn't be surprised in Randi goes back to four hours.

WXKS/WKOX is conducting a survey before they decide whether to move Ed Schultz to 12p-3p. Here's the announcment on their website

You may have heard that Ed Schultz is looking to do his show live from 12-3pm. We want to know if you would be interested in hearing his show live or keeping Al Franken in the 12-3pm timeslot?

FYI, Thom Hartmann will be filling in for Al Franken.

A. Listen to Ed 12-3pm
B. Keep Al on 12-3pm
C. I'd like to hear Thom Hartmann in that timeslot
