Same goes for the comment about classic rock. The songs you hear today from artists like The Eagles, Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc., all held very quick rotations on the AOR stations in their debut years. Apparently you may have forgotten how many times one heard an Eagles song back then.
In research over the years, these same songs and artists that you feel are overplayed, continue to test the highest in audience research even today. And you really believe that classic rock stations would be more popular if they played lesser-known tracks or from lesser-known artists? Think again. There have been stations who have attempted adaptation of the "needle drop" iteration rock format, but all have been abysmal failures.

TVradioguru said:Not to yet again state the really obvious; but radio stations, public or commercial, big or small, exist to survive and grow which they do by making money. You make money by finding a niche', growing your audience, then selling advertising to those who want to reach that audience. The bigger the audience, the more you charge for your commerical or underwriting announcement. Simple!
Stations invest a great deal of money in those polls and numbers that you find so unappealing so they can begin-to or continue making the almighty dollar. And those who participate in the focus groups, music research, or ratings? You guessed it, they're human too. Believe me, stations wouldn't invest in research if they didn't want to reach the population that would, or does listen to a particular format or genre'. Does that make them evil greedy corporate operators? Perhaps, but that would apply to every single station that wants to last longer in business than a year or so.

TVradioguru said:Still not sure why you're once again hijacking this thread to rant about some particular morning show, especially when you're out of the market anyway. To me, out of market listeners complaining should be held in the same regard as a customer trying to return a retail item to Walmart that they bought at Target.
Most personality-based rock morning shows feature occasional music breaks, its nothing new. If whatever station this BJ is on happens to be an active rock or classic rock format, they need to make sure their listeners hear some music every once and a while. That and it gives the show time to get a guest into the studio, line up a guest on the phone, go to the restroom, etc.

Some of us did question BJ about it. He spent half the week, calling listeners out who questioned him on his video blogs. It's almost as if they welcome playing Led Zepp, Jimi and a re-current each hour so they don't have to produce content. I think playing music during BJ's show is complete garbage. It kills the pace and personality of the show. BJ had been doing TALK radio on a ROCK station for over 5 years and NOW something is WRONG with the show? In my eyes, It devalues BJ's show as a product and makes it sound like any show I can listen to here in Boise...
Certainly not a show in a top market like Seattle...

Yet in the end readers of this board are going to be the losers since you are going to critique every little thing about the show and post it here.
