Seattle taking over S.F.?

It seems like a lot of Seattle influence is coming to S.F. airwaves:

Movin' modeled after Seattle's station
T-Man Show on KYLD is out of Seattle
New Wolf P.D. is coming from Seattle

My question is WHY? The Bay Area's demographics and lifestyle are nothing like Seattle's. Why all of a sudden the influx?

Two words:

Cookie cutter

One more word:

Tweakable

(and tweakable in the "laughable" sense, if one also wishes to view it that way...ratings will decide...)

T-Man is too BIG for just the Bay and Seattle. This show could be on everywhere if they chose.

give me a break, are you kidding me ... you honestly dont really think that. I know everyone is entitled to an opinion, but we can all come together that t-man is a joke and the only love he has on this board is from interns/Seattle promotions assistants ...

The one time i called in, the phone screener asked me if they could put down "from napa county"

thats hack not skill.

we had him first, his name is Tom Leykis... at least Leykis doesnt have a "hole" on the show

A competing Bay Area radio executive's quote to me last friday pertaining to the T-Man show: "I'm nervous about the buzz this show is building."

hey there RP...I must admit I listened on the internet for an hour or so a couple of weeks ago and I thought the show was overated. Maybe I caught it on the wrong day and need to listen a second time but I had high expectations from the "buzz" that it had gotten from all the way over on the other coast but I didn't get it. I look forward to listening again when I get a chance.

Just curious, outside the CC family, what listeners are T-Man stealing? I guess I can see some Live 105 folks. Free? I guess, although that is not much of an audience to dip into. Lamont & Tonelli? Seems like totally different demographics there. Same with Alice. KNBR's bad morning show?

KCBS, KGO, KOIT, KFOG, KQED? I would say a total of zero from those shows.

It would seem he is getting mostly Renel's and KMEL's listeners. Which would mean basically re-cutting the same pie.

A few of my homies that only lisen to the Spanish stations are now in with T.

With some slight exceptions, the differences between Seattle and S.F. are not that far apart. Both are liberal, progressive cities. S.F. is more racially and ethnically diverse, but both cities share a world view, an acceptance of different points of view, and are both competing for the most beautiful cities in America. (S.F. most days wins, but on a rare clear, sunny day, Seattle wins!). S.F. has a rich musical history that dates backs to the 60's, but Seattle made up a lot of ground in the 90's. Some have said that Seattle is the NEW San Francisco, and there may be some truth to that. Bottom line, S.F. is still the prominent west coast city, but Seattle is close behind. (Sorry, L.A., but it has moved into a different league, not a league anyone is really proud of anymore.)

What's funny about this post, this guy actually called the Tman show!! You hate on him, but you called the show.

Starbucks non-related???

These days, with stations having one guy doing the jobs of three people, not having a Starbucks on every corner and the constant supply of caffeine this supplies to employees would surely bring broadcasts around the nation to a halt. Seattle has us RIGHT WHERE THEY WANT US, and they know it!

And that's not the worst of it:

All of the voicetracking automation systems that allow stations to cut jobs run on MICROSOFT systems. Those rain-soaked b#stards win again!!

When that know-it-all corporate VP rolls into town to look at your station and figure out how many employees he can get away with firing, well, you know how he most likely got here....ON A BOEING AIRLINER!!! DAMN!! THEY GOT US AGAIN!!!

Those watery weasels up north took over this business a long time ago! We just didn't realize it until now.

What if you are a white, male, conservative, Republican evangelical Christian who doesn't believe climate change is taking place?

I always find the so-called "tolerant" markets to be far less diverse and accepting than they think. While a lot of cities in the "red state" South have a much more live and let live attitude.

Radio is so much more diverse here in Memphis than it is either Seattle or San Francisco.

Brian,

If only the white, male, conservative, Republican evangelical Christians of the world would quit listening to right-wing radio designed to make you paranoid about Christianity under siege or terrorists in your breakfast cereal, and truly live by the "live and let live" attitudes you mentioned, there might be a little less divisiveness in our country and our lives. You will also find the current "conservative" agenda is anything but conservative, it's radical, but it's been presented as conservative and designed to play upon your deepest traditions and loyalites so you'll go along with it. The Democratic party these days reflects the more conservative ethos of our Founding Fathers more than the Republicans currently do, and as a Libertarian, it takes a lot for me to say that.

Come to the west coast, there are plenty of megachurches and shooting ranges out here, and I don't see all sorts of lefties, etc., protesting them or otherwise. Ever been to Orange County? As Republican an area as you can find, except they're not evangelical Republicans, just well-paid, highly-medicated Republicans too jaded to care about the environment who don't like religious puritans telling them what they can do between the sheets. Plus, you are aware which city the Michael Savage show is based out of.

As a white, male, conservative in L.A., I'll be the first too admit some so-called liberals are as empty-headed and as quick to judge based on learned responses as wacked-out right-wingers, and I'm not doubting radio may be more diverse in Memphis. If it is, great, it should be, Memphis is a great American music city. I've had some wonderful visits to Tennessee. Memphis may have a market make-up better suited for successful radio diversity, but that has little bearing on quality of life or level of political correctness somewhere. And you red staters relax, you still have your disaster of a President for another two years, so enjoy it.

Well, this thread has certainly steered a little off course, but San Francisco is in no danger of being "taken over by Seattle". The truth is that S.F. is one of the premiere cities in the U.S., and Seattle is an up and comer. Radio in both is mediocre (perhaps due to lousy FM reception due to the hills that exist in both cities). The old KFRC and KJR excepted of course, but that was AM.

The cities share quite a bit. Water, great views, tolerant people, lousy weather during certain times of the year, and a populace that understands culture, the arts, and coffee. Bookstores thrive in both, and both have large gay populations. San Francisco is a classic American city. Seattle may be approaching that status, but isn't quite there yet. But if you move to either city, plan on paying about 20% more than average in Seattle and 40% more than average in S.F. for just about everything. Quality of life = higher prices. Bottom line: Both are great places to live regardless of political leanings. And yes, conservatives exist in both!

Right. ::) Tell that to the 3000 dead at the WTC in New York.

Another S.F.-Seattle connection: saw a weather channel special today on the most "green" cities in the US, (taking steps to combat global warming, if that is indeed even possible), and Seattle ranked #3, San Francisco #1. (Portland, OR #2). I know, nothing to do with radio, so sue me...
