Seattle TV Wall to Wall on Murder Spree

Actually, I only noted KIRO 7 doing this. KOMO, KCPQ, KING I couldn't reliably bring in their streams. Maybe someone can fill me in on the others.

I think this is a good call. Clark Stahl provided great copter coverage. This was riveting, and what local TV news does best, especially when public safety is involved. Again, I can't speak for the others, but KIRO was all over this today.
 
I had to work all day so I missed the wall to wall TV coverage.

I did tune into KOMO about 3PM to listen to Jane and Herb through the PM Drive. KOMO's coverage was absolutely phenomenal. Jane and Herb were outstanding, juggling the breaking news, and they had reporters, editors and KOMO4 reporters all over town, with non-stop live reports.

Quality station. Simply put. I'm at my home in Bellevue: KIRO has good coverage, but KOMO's was supreme.
 
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I thought the afternoon coverage on KOMO was dreadful.

I heard some of Ken Schram in the 2 p.m. hour and he did a pretty good job...interviewing reporters and updating the story.

But then Jane and Herb came on at 3 p.m. and started doing 'sidebar' interviews. First they had some east coast college professor talking about why we're having so many shootings. Then Ann Rule...a freakin' book author...talking about why we're having so many shootings. It sounded like something you'd expect to hear 48 hours after the shootings.

At 3 p.m. I'm sure thousands of people were finding out about the facts of this story for the first time. Plus at 3 p.m. there were still unfolding developments.

Frankly, I thought Jane and Herb sounded like idiots...ignoring the breaking news and doing interviews with authors and professors. Just my 2 cents.
 
Sorry, I was asking about the TV stations coverage. There is no TV section for Seattle on this site, but perhaps there should be. (As they do for bigger markets, just scroll down)

So, I will assume that the Seattle thread covers it all, as it has in the past.

The shooter is now dead, officially. Unfortunately, another innocent also died tonight. What a terrible story out of Seattle tonight.
 
I was surprised that neither MSNBC nor CNN covered the story live. They are always covering shootings like this live when they happen in other parts of the country. They were too busy giving even more air time to that obnoxious buffoon Trump!

Totally agreed, the national cable nets completely ignore the Pacific Northwest. They don't understand that this region has a large population. They don't get it, and they will continue to believe that only the east coast and California only matter. Such BS, and they don't even realize it.
 
The KING coverage was good..well done. KIRO had the edge in air superiority I think. Also, by the way, I thought 97.3 FM did a very good job on their coverage as well. The field reporting from them since the Lakewood murders has vastly improved. The hosts kept themselves mostly in check..kept the rambling to a minimum. The only exception (a small one) is Ron Upshaw. The guy has a difficult time putting periods at the end of his sentences and finishing up a thought... He goes a bit over the top at times with his "possible scenarios". Too many TV cop shows I think..
 
I watched KIRO mostly and thought they did a great job my only real comment is that it's sad that our news folks actually have the chance to improve their coverage on these stories, it sure does seem to be happening a lot in our quiet NW Metropolis....
 
Have to agree with the radio coverage assessments. Ron & Don & Ken Schram are NOT who you want on the air when this sort of thing happens. And Norm Stamper? That's the BEST you could come up with, KOMO?

That being said, the field reporting was (mostly) good. Slight edge to KIRO on this one.

As for the TV stuff - KIRO wins hands down, followed by KING. KIRO was wall-to-wall from the beginning, and KING stayed on till 2pm, and back at 4 with breakins throughout the 3pm hour.
 
I also found myself taking a break (even though I was commuting I-5 while listening late in the day). Combination of up-to-minute new information coupled with a couple interview with people who added absolutely NO VALUE made it hard to find a mental groove. Nothing against the experts...but if it is clear they are not offering anything of value when the air time is at a premium, then find a way to wrap the phoner and move on. This subject was speaking in broad generalities about why someone might have gone into a coffee shop and been "upset". The only person who could have wandered more aimlessly with less substance would have been Ellen DeGeneres.
 
I love Manda and really like Greg too. I will be excited when they come on the air this month. I also like Herb Weisbaum and get the feeling he knows what he is talking about. His partner- eh, not so much. I find myself tuning to KOMO a lot for traffic and breaking news because they are owned with KOMO 4. I trust KOMO- but Tuesday's coverage was not the best.
 
I've watched KIRO every time something like this happens and it's like reading the National Enquirer, nothing but sensationalism. I'm sorry but Steve and Angela are really lame.

KIRO's air coverage is superior. And actually, I think Steve and Angela are quite careful to not read too much into what they see. They are cautious most of the time. They may be tabloid compared to KING and KOMO, but compared to TMZ, or most big market local TV, they are tame. Seattle needs a little spike in the level of energy of local news, IMO. I'm glad KIRO has chosen to take over this position in the market, though it isn't anything new for them, back in the 80's KIRO had a similar level of energy.

KOMO is no-nonsense. That is why I watch them in the morning. And all weekend long, because of my good friend Shannon O'Donell.

Mayor McGinn and the Chamber of Commerce are likely happy the cable folks did not cover it as much as you had hoped.

Well, perhaps, as this was not a good day for Seattle. However, I thought the SPD did an excellent job, not only on the ground, but in their pressers. Very good PR for local tv, and at the end of the day, a very good job to resolve the situation. I have never been more admiring of the SPD.
