Can someone analyze these numbers deeper to explain how *two* country stations have made the top 4 over a 3-month span?

This doesn't seem plausible in a market that's 14% Black and 24.3% Hispanic overall. I surmise those percentages for those ethnic groups are even higher when confined to the 25-54 cell.

So for The Fan haters out there explain to me what is going on over at 103.3 ESPN??? KRLD-FM seems to have overtaken KESN in PPM's.

Obviously nothing except the destruction of KTCK studios will ever have KRLD-FM over KTCK in ratings, but The Fan seems to have something going for them right???

Looks like they have, but looks can be deceiving...

Obviously nothing except the destruction of KTCK studios will ever have KRLD-FM over KTCK in ratings, but The Fan seems to have something going for them right???
(Men 25-54 9and does anything else really matter in Sports Radio???)
M-Su 6a-Mid, Ticket 1st, Espn 18th and Fan 23rd.
M-F 6a-Mid, Tick #1, Espn #14, Fan 21
M-F 6a-7p Tick #1, Espn #13, Fan #22
M-F 6a-10a, Tick #1, Espn #8 Fan #20
10-Noon, Tick #1, Espn #20, Fan #19
N-3p, Tick #1, ESPN #16, Fan #18
3-7p Tick #1, ESPN #14, Fan #25
7-Mid, Tick #27, Espn #26, Fan #12.

So what the Fan 'has going for them is:
#1 the fact that they're not Michael Irvin from 10-Noon (since that's the only daytime slot where they beat ESPN)
and
#2. that their night time jocks need to be locked up to a long term deal, because obviously whatever jocks theyhave on at night is KILLING both the Ticket and ESPN.

So who's on at night on KRLD_FM? Is it the wacky DJ team of Pete Stein and Mike Rodriguez? Or would this reflect the wacky Arnie Spanier show?

Or is the nighttime team getting all those listeners Wacky Ron Washington and his zany Ranger Zoo Crew...

Good thing they'll have that Ron Washington crew on every night to pump up their numbers... ::)

(And Outlaw-from August to September, M-F 6a mid the Fan is down from 14th to 21st. 6a-7p, down 14th to 22nd. 6a-10a, down 15 to 20th. 10-Noon, down 9 to 19th. N-3p, down 13 to 18. 3p-7p, down 22 to 25. The only place they're up is 7p-Mid, 15th to 12th. What do you think is going to happen to those night numbers now that the Rangers have, once again, not made the post season???)

And here's a wacky game if anybody wants to play. Try to guess what TWENTY stations do better in Men25-54 than KRLD_FM.
Okay, obviously the 2 other sports stations. Throw in a couple of talk station (+2=4) 3-4 rock stations (=8) Couple of country stations (=10) A couple of hispanic stations (=13), couple of urban stations (=15)

So what FIVE (or more) other stations are drawing more men then The Fan? Mix or KVIL maybe? What's it say about your product when a station that appeals to females is drawing more men than your male station...

But if I93 even draws a little bit away from KISS, look who's in front of KISS. That's right, Their sister station, the Wolf. I bet this is multi-dimensional move from Cumulus- if i93 explodes, so much the better, but if they can just help keep KISS off the Wolf's back, even better-er....

If the ratings period was really 8/20/09 - 9/16/09 as listed in the post, KLIF-FM changed formats midday 9/4, so the ratings would be for 11 and half days of i93.

Certainly, KLIF-FM has a tougher challenge of creating an audience out of not much. With KDBN ending with about 20-25% the audience share KLLI had before it became KRLD-FM, and little in coverage of the change from KDBN to KLIF-FM, it's change was fairly invisible. KLLI's flip to KRLD-FM came with lots of press coverage (each of the TV stations running stories, particularly on the Russ Martin removed as a result angle

Mind you, this is when 'The Fan' is supposed to take off. CBS paid huge money to lock up the rights to the Cowboys games. 'The Fan' is "your home for the Dallas Cowboys", this is supposed to be when everyone 'wakes up' and realizes how awsome 'The Fan' is and listens to it!

So, now we're 1/4th of the way through the season, and how's that working out? 23rd among Men 25-54. Awsome.

This has to be the most stupid strategic move by a radio station since David Lee Roth.

If you believe the ratings company, country does fairly well with Hispanics (see page 37):
http://www.arbitron.com/downloads/hispanicradiotoday08.pdf

I don't know how KSCS and KPLX do here; I assume how well in a given market depends on how assimilated the Hispanics are. One would think first generation Hispanics that speak pretty much only Spanish probably only listen to Spanish-language radio. After that, I would think listening would mirror other groups. The inference that they couldn't have listeners because there is a sizable minority community doesn't seem to jive with that study or looking at other markets in the southwest.

The Laredo market is 95% Hispanic and the country station there regularly gets 8-9% share of the audience. The English stations get around 30% of the audience overall. Albuquerque is 41% Hispanic, but doesn't have a lot of Spanish-language radio. Univision has 4 stations in that market -- 2 are Spanish-language and 2 are English-language (R&B KKSS, classic rock KIOT). I believe, as a population, much like San Antonio, the Hispanic population is fairly second generation or later.

To be fair, the ratings period ended 2 days (Sept 16) after the first weekend of the NFL season concluded.

The story that I heard from people inside Cumulus is that they were more than willing to not re-up their deal with the Cowboys for a couple of reasons-
#1 Jerry controls so much of the inventory that there was little revenue upside for them in carrying the games. And
#2 That they saw little to no 'bump' from carrying the Cowboys. That while a lot of people tuned in during the game itself, that doesn't translate to an overall effect on M-Su ratings.

The problem that I think the Fan may have is how much recycling is there from broadcasts to sports talk. If the Ticket couldn't recycle enough people to make a difference in their ratings, what makes us think that Fan will be able to convert "guy who listens to game because he's not near TV" into "guy who tunes in on Monday to talk about the game"?

Ok, like I said it seemed. I'm not saying it's anything, cause the Ticket is ALWAYS going to be #1 in sports (unless the station loses power or something). That would never happen though.

The Fan has at least for now jumped to the first loser in DFW sports.

When KVIL carried the games, I doubt a lot of guys hung around for the Monday programming as well...

With KTCK though, I wonder if there was an opportunity missed. Love them or hate them, the KTCK crew are pretty creative in terms of generating content. During the time KTCK had them, however, there wasn't anything special in the way of programming wrt to the Cowboys. Seems like there could have been a lot of opportunity to do something outside the fairly formal and stiff Cowboys-managed interviews and programming and generate some "radio gold." To the other extreme in fan base in the Stars, KTCK has had some pretty cool (yearly road trips with the Stars) and "wheels off" (NHL all-star game events, some of the midday crew dressed up as knights and going into the Nashville NHL team's locker room last year when here for a game, etc.) that seem like stuff the Cowboys or the NFL wouldn't go for...all before they became the flagship this season. Either the Stars promotions and marketing folks are fun-lovin' and "get" what KTCK does or the Cowboys staff are just really uptight and don't feel the need to do anything special since they are the dominant sports team in town?

Oh, I don't think so. Everything changes sooner or later.

But follow me here-
I've got a friend that I play this game with-
Imagine you're programming a station and you're up against _________. What do you do, how do you attack, position, etc.

Fill in the blank with "KTCK".
What are their strengths? Weaknesses? How do you make their weaknesses your strengths, etc.

For me, their strengths are their longevity, and how they walk that fine line between serious sports talk and schtick. Their weaknesses are their longevity, their self-absorption (rarely take phone calls, a lot of one guy talking to the other) and the fact that they will do schtick, get off topic, etc.

Okay how do we attack their weaknesses- Longevity- counter that by promoting YOUR hosts ties to DFW. Oh that's right, they fired most of the guys that had been on in this marekt before, and hired a bunch of out of towners no one has heard of.

Self absorption- they've countered this by going overboard with listener reax. Instead of constantly going phone call then read atext, call, read more texts, etc, how about grouping them, got a 10 minute segment? Do 5 minutes of your opinions, summarize the texts for a couple of minutes, then take a couple minutes of calls. As is, it's all over the road and I find it nearly unlistenable. (and the ratings show a lot of other people find it unlistenable).

Then off-topic. Tuned in to Jagger this morning he was talking Letterman. Last night Barsky and Henson were talking best sports bars. Kinda related, but not 'sports' talk per se. And if you think people don't like the Ticket goes off topic, why are you also going off topic?

They're programming that station like it's The Ticket***, when yep, there's already a Ticket. If they just do what KTCK does, they're never going to win. They have to either offer something different, or find what they do better than the Ticket and use that to beat them down.

***-And bonus points for anybody that can tell me what major mistake they're making by doing this. Hint: KTCK has incredibly low cume and ungodly TSL. Compare and contrast that with KRLD-FM and their choice of topics...

As Far as why Country does so well...remember that 60% of the population is "other." That give the Country stations a big pool of potential audience. Plus, Hispanics DO cume Country..especially The Wolf. The format is pretty hot right now with plenty of TV and print exposure. Add to that the fact that most all of the Country format's A and B list of performers came through the area this summer and you have plenty of reasons why Country does well right now. Plus...need I say it? It's Texas.

If anything...the Country stations were probably under represented during the diary days. Even here, there are folks that don't want to admit that they listen to anything that twangs.

I noticed that KFWR was up a little bit too. Further indication that this was a Country friendly month.
