September 2012 Ratings for Tampa

When Randy Michaels pulled the plug on his news stations in New York and Chicago after about a year, consultant Valerie Geller wrote a lengthy commentary about the need for talk driven formats to grow. There's no reason to think CBS is going to panic if they don't immediately capture the market. Besides what it looks like we have here is an extended audition period for everyone who's on the air now. If it turns out the can't cut it or are so difficult to deal with that they're not worth the trouble, they can easily fill any time slot they want with their own CBS branded network programming. Without naming names, I think some shows are working very well, while IMHO some aren't and some just aren't a good fit. (I'm not going to name names because that's likely to derail the thread into attacks and defenses of individual hosts and that's not what we're talking about here).

In any case, I think there may be a couple of hosts who have multi-year contracts, but I suspect the great majority are working "at will" and that we may see another shakeup (there's already been one for those keeping score) when the network gets geared up. Personally, I like having local hosts talking about local sports and that's where I'm doing most of my listening these days.

Sounds as though you are having a "relapse"...

CC4life - you are completely clueless about the direction CBS Sports Radio.

If you really think Mike Pepper, Lynne Austin (it appears she is only the 'voice' of the station - little other role)....and Jerry Petuck are 'calling the shots' - you shouldn't even be commenting on this board.

Read back on other posts and you will see CBS made significant investments both in management, talent and even a build-out of a 1st class studio for 98.7 The Fan. It is not going to fail. Press releases from 10+ months ago signaled their intentions with the transfer of VP/Market Manager Ben Hill (goes back to the early CBS days with Dan Mason - now CBS Radio President) and bringing Brian Thomas - VP of Programming a few months later down from NYC. Those 2 guys are the 1-2 punch, and rating have already made MAJOR movement on the other CBS Radio stations in the market, and 98.7 is beginning to follow suit in the weekly's as well.......

Show me a LIVE/LOCAL on-air line-up that includes better talent all-day in this market in the spoken word format that includes LIVE/LOCAL updates every 20 minutes, fresh attitude, caller interaction all day, no EGO----- and perhaps your opinion should be trusted, but that isn't going to happen.

CBS has a major initiative across the country in SPORTS radio - and the consulting from outside the market includes executives from San Fran and NYC that have had major success with this in NYC, PITT, PHILLY, CHICAGO, SAN FRAN, and DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket is regularly #1 general market A25-54, and always TOP 3 gen market). For that matter, CBS is the pioneer of all-sports radio with 660 The Fan in NYC. With CBS's understanding of sports in TV, online assets and now even more focus on radio, I'd be remiss if I didn't again remind you - that the folks you mentioned disparagingly were chosen by CBS to execute CBS's strategy. They aren't calling the shots, they are executing the plan.

You may have a bit of envy about not being a part of their team, but over time you will definatively see that 98.7 The Fan and it's little brother 1010 CBS Sports Radio will own the Tampa market share on the radio dial. WDAE will continue on, and do ok, but 98.7 The Fan will be in the drivers seat.

So "raydeogeek" is actually Jerry Petuck's username on this board?

2 of the 3 time slots on CBS' new national network which have not yet been filled (or at least publicly announced) are 6-10PM and 2-6AM.

Wright is now working 6-10, and the Babe 2-6. Both have significant national experience.

If Tampa hosts what become national shows, I'm sure there's a plan within CBS to have some of the national billing count towards the local budget (or for the national shows' contracts not to count against them).

In that case the local content becomes almost a throwaway and can take as long as it needs to build. Then they pry away the Rays and or Bucs when the contract comes up and it's game on.

Re: CBS Sports Radio Network hosts:

Damon Amendolara of WBZ-FM Boston will host 2-6am.

Rumored hosts of the 6-9am slot are Brandon Tierney (currently KGMZ "The Game" San Francisco; formerly WEPN ESPN NY) and Tiki Barber (former NY Giant/NBC Sports).

No surprise that Booger didnt mesh well with Todd Wright. That's what happens when you put someone with the intellect and vocabulary and temperament of a 7 year old together with a genius.

Whoever thought up that combo needs to be shown the door.

Rich Herrera isnt awful, I dont get all the hate.

But yea, pretty much the entire lineup except for Todd sucks.

Oh come on, Todd deserves more respect than that. He has the vocabulary of at least a nine year old.

Now, I'm disappointed.

After all these years, I thought the complainers just didn't like us Republicans. Now, I see you guys just dont like ANYBODY!

I am lead to the conclusion you are just jealous they have the jobs, and you guys don't.

exboardop - which show do you host on a major, top-20 market FM sports station? oh, wait, none. thanks for your opinion, but no thanks. i'd guess every personality on 98.7 The Fan, including the fabulous sports babe can throw a football further than you, run a 5k faster than you, garner a crowd of interested listeners for longer than you, and can pick up the phone and have a days worth of big name interviews on stand-by faster than you can pick up your unemployment check downtown. have a nice day.

And they can do all that while blowing out some of the worst talk radio heard in the Bay area! Don't get me wrong, there are some good people working there, but that doesn't change the fact that 90% of the time (especially during the week, during key hours) it sounds like absolute horse shit.
