September 6+ numbers are out... discuss

Given the choices for morning drive, and the lowest common denominator approach to programming, I'd rather have my MP3 player any day of the week, but mostly I listen to XM 60's on 6, where the music spins constantly and the host is there for my benefit, not his.

But there is a companionship quality that radio brings, especially in morning drive, that you just can't get from an iPod.

See, I think the lack of companionship is the problem with Matty in that younger demo (again, if someone has the numbers and could prove me wrong, I'll shut up). I always seem to be tuning in when Matty is talking about getting in a car accident, or his TV breaking, or something that couldn't have less to do with the station's format. There's a featured podcast on the Kiss 108 website with a story about Matty picking Billy Costa up from his colonoscopy -- who in the W18-25 demo wants to hear that?

Greater Media seems to like the jockless concept on 92.9 - if they were to just willing to get out of the safe 25-54 bracket for once and flip the music to CHR, I'm convinced they'd be able to pull some numbers with very little effort vs. the colonoscopy talk on Kiss.

If the tables were turned and another company in Boston owned a CHR with a 10 share what are the chances CC would put on a competitor? My guess is 1000% chance.

The last MAJOR player that had reason to flip a station was when CBS blew up WBCN, moved formats and calls, and took what was a historically under performing property ( WBCN was 16th in it's final book IIRC) and made a run at the competition ( 850 WEEI, and affiliated stations) in the war of sports stations.

I think we can all agree, that CBS took a gamble and won, not like they had anything to lose if you ask me.

Now the next question, knowing CC owns 94.5 and 107.9, basically owning the youth demographic in the market, is who (assuming major player) has an under performing, under billing station, that would have nothing to lose if they flipped it?

IMHO none of the majors have a station to risk, or the budget to do it.

I'm open to hear others opinions, agreeable or not.

the numbers have been embargoed for a while now IIRC, but I could be wrong.

Look at the ratings page and notice the last time they were posted before this book.

The reason I mentioned it at all was to point out what Boston stations showed up in the Providence ratings, since we usually discuss why WEEI's providence affiliate should count
( or not) in the WEEI ratings numbers game with 98.5

"WXKS-AM and WKOX-AM are simulcast"?

When did that happen?

Probably at the same time as WJMN went "Rhythmic AC."

Well, what would you expect out of WJMN...Dance Top 40? Basically, Arbitron may want to look at how they categorize a station's true format.

With spoilers like Pandora, iPods and MP3's, YouTube, and even Internet Radio Stations, people are expecting FM radio to play what they want to hear when they want to hear it. No one wants to hear talk these days, because they have been spoiled by on demand internet services that give them what they want at the touch of a button. Terrestrial Radio's competition has exploded in the past decade.

In the car with a friend one weekday morning, I vividly remember he was searching through the dial looking for music but it was all talk, and he said something like "damn why is it all talk on the way to work every morning? i really need one of those ipod adapters for this car". And he is in the 18-25 demo.

Keep in mind that radio = broadcasting. Radio Broadcasting is much mroe than simply music.

People don't tune into say, Matty, for the music. They tune into it to be "connected" to something live, entertaining, local, amusing.

These are not things they get from their iPod or Pandora.
