September Ratings

And they started out as Classic Hits before Classic Hits started to mean former Oldies stations.
You make a good point in that "Classic Hits" was evolving separately even as the Oldies stations were declining in sales demos. And that could mean, that while some Oldies stations evolved into the format, it is indeed a separate format.

iHM needs to fix its mistake. Move hip-hop back to 105.3. Ditch the deader-than-dead Power brand. (Want to run an even crappier version of it on an HD2 just to say you're clearing some syndie junk? Have at it.)

Put Adult Contemporary, Adult Hits or Classic Rock on 96.1 depending on sales objectives.

iHM generally does an excellent job with Adult Contemporary in major markets. Putting a mass appeal format like that on a monster signal seems like the best option to me. It would pair very nicely with 94.9 for sales purposes, too.

Well, at this point, their hands are kind of tied. The Beat's move to 96.1 was too recent to reverse things now. They made too big a commitment to it.

But long term if the situation doesn't change, going AC would pit them against B98.5, and flipping to Classic Rock would put them in direct competition with The River. The market does seem to have a hole for Adult Hits.

IIRC the River was aimed at 96 Rock with The Regular Guys doing mornings. TRG self destructed leaving an sub average Classic Rock station which tried AA then became totally a non factor until it went CHR. I always thought I heart could do CHR well but somehow the out of market national shows didn't work.

94Q’s only “up” ratings book between 1987 and 1990 was the Spring 1989 book, when “Jazz Flavors” was finally banished back to Sunday nights only.

When the station was #1 or 2 in the market, they could afford to experiment a little bit. When it was #13, they should have stuck with a consistent sound during all dayparts.

And even when WQXI became Star, the management insisted that “Jazz Flavors” be reinstated to weeknights. No wonder it took a good three years to see some upward momentum.
