Serving The Universe, and from Mesquite, Texas too

Congrats to local Dallas RI/RD Member Robert Bass who had an international audience during his world wide show last night on Vancouver's Hit Music Mix - LG73, a Canadian based internet station. Robert's show originated from Mesquite, Texas.

From Mesquite, Texas => to Vancouver British Columbia => to the World!

LG73 even has FLAMETHORER and other legacy JAM jingles cuts, complete with the original Serving the Universe (sono), the original Z-100 NY Top 'O The Hour ID (which is a custom variant of a Warp Factor cut). And they truly are serving the universe, with jocks on the station representing nations all over the world!

The show was great, with cool music like Jane Child's "Don't Want to Fall in Love" which I love and haven't heard since it charted in 1990, and the LP/long version intro/non radio edit of Level 42's "Something About You" which never gets airplay.

Robert even had a Milli Vinilli segment which surprised because I thought everyone had returned those CD's for a pittance of a refund provided by the record label due to settlement of a class action law suit(?)

Robert will be on the air all over the world again next Saturday at 8pm Central, and here's how you find him:

Click on www.lg73.ca

Hey, it's easier to find Robert then it is tuning in to KLIF on HD-2 (which requires first tuning to some FM station and then hitting the seek button, and that's if and only if you have an HD Radio)!

Robert, congrats man. You are way cool!

Robert even had a Milli Vinilli segment

I must restate.... my wife reminds me that it was not a Milli Vinilli "segment" but rather Milli was played as a request from the electronic chat room that originated from someone outside the US.

Apparently they didn't recall the All or Nothing album in other countries..

Actually MV was "jokingly" requested by a U.S. listener who was fully aware of the controversy. It was under discussion in the chat room and that's why I played it.

This is my fourth or fifth time to host a show on the LG73 Internet station. I've known Phil since about 2001, and used to do a Super Seventies Sunday show for him. That show ran through November of 2003. I got out of Internet radio at that point because I was named MD at KEOM. When the KEOM gig went south in 2008, Phil invited me back to LG and I did an all 80s show for him on Saturday nights. Later, we relaunched the Super Seventies Sunday show.

Over the course of that time frame, things were not going well for me, personally. I was dealing with a severe case of PTSD and depression from losing the KEOM gig and finally decided to essentially retire from broadcasting. This meant ending both the 70s and 80s shows on LG73. While he was completely understanding about what I was going through, Phil wasn't exactly happy about that decision and it left him with two blocks of programming to replace.

We remained in touch and after a few months he coaxed me back to the station and thus "Reeling in the Hits" was born. But it didn't last very long, and after one rough night of a ridiculous disagreement between the two of us, the show was dropped. I won't go into details about the whole fiasco, as that's now in the past. Since then, we've managed to basically move forward with a relaunch of Reeling in the Hits.

Phil is indeed a very understanding person and I appreciate both his patience and his invitation to relaunch the RITH show. It's a shame that the Mesquite Schools management doesn't have the same compassion Phil has. Otherwise, I might still be with KEOM. It's their loss...

I might add that Rob's own station is doing very well on live365. I enjoy listening to his 80s station every day.

AND he's recently added custom sweepers... I like the station more with sweepers than dry segs only. My TSL is going up!

Thanks for listening! Yes indeed, the station is currently ranked #5 in the 80s genre and #145 overall on Live365.

Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last
You wouldn't know a diamond
If you held it in your hand
The things you think are precious
I can't understand

Are you Rreelin' in the Hits?

If not, you should be!

OH, Robert-

I forgot to ask...

Is Reelin' in the Hits powered by Pretzel Logic technology?

Ummmmmmm, no ;D

But it is powered by OtsAV, which was the software that the original "Jack FM" launched with on the Internet. ;)

If you write down every song Robert plays in one hour, you can have a chance at $1500 just like with JACK. But Robert Bass will pay you in Monopoly money!

Playlist on the 3/9 edition of Reelin' in the Hits included:

On the Radio:
Hasn't been played in Dallas since Banana Joe Montione did mornings at 102!

Lotta Love:
Reminded me of the show ending of WKRP season 1 Ep 11

Lights Out:
Love that one from 1984, Lotta airplay in NY, but I completely had to look it up (Peter Wolf)

Lost in Your Eyes:
"That's what happens every time I'm at the corner of Collins and Randol Mill Rd and I Can't See Cowboy Stadium... cause I'm Lost in Your Eyes" [my proposed personal intro for Debbie]

Opposites Attract / Wild Pair Long Version: Paula Abdul

Ace of Base: same song as played last week, (I think) this is a personal fav?

Girl You Know It's True: MV again!

Journey Pair:
Girl Can't Help It (haven't heard that since '87)
and Only the Young (title song from Vision Quest Movie)

You can't hear that in Dallas. Not even on JACK's HD-2!

Last week it was Living In Danger. This week it was The Sign.

Thanks for listening!

Over in Seoul, South Korea, LG means Lucky Goldstar. But in Vancouver and in the rest of the free world, LG-73 means Maximum Music!

Reelin in the Hits / Show notes from 3-16-13:

1) Moving Pictures "What About Me" ... Buzz Bennet had that in rotation in 1989 when it charted for a second time. (Original chart year was 1983; similar to Benny Mardones 'Into The Night,' also played on Y-95 in 1989, charted for a second time in 1989, with an original chart year 1980)

-Robert said that was on one of 4 in a row on cassette single. The Moving Pictures CD is very difficult to find.

2) The Food Segment: Eat It, Lasagna, & Addicted to Spuds (Weird Al)... would have been funny to follow with Scenes from a Italian Restaurant (Bottle of Red, Bottle of White for the pallet)

3) Prince's "Batdance" with the question posed when is the last time you heard that? (yea, Folger probably played that on KEGL)

4) Bass took the "hit the post" challenge with Mockingbird (Carly Simon and James Taylor) and won..
it has an intro time of :00!

5) And NKOTB from '89 (before they were truncated to NKOTB) The Right Stuff

Love the Night Rider 1980's instrumental you use as an outro..

I suggest this narration-

"Robert Bass, a young loner on a crusade to champion to cause of great radio by taking back the airwaves from big corporate clusters who operate above the law..."

Cheers for the show notes JRZ!

On another note, I've ordered new sweepers for Legendary 80s. They should be in sometime next week. Legendary 80s has moved up to position #4 in the 80s genre on Live365, out of 300 80s stations over there.
