Shakeup at KEOM?

Anyone know what's up at KEOM? Haven't heard Bass in PM drive for awhile now. Did he quit?

He's still the Music Manager (equivalent to PD) and promises a SURPRISE soon...I'm betting on that long-awaited switch to 80s, myself. I don't think he was given any specific reason for being taken off PM drive, but what a slap in the face for 22 years of service.

WHAT?

Are you serious? They took him off the air? Why?

Maybe the district is finally getting with the program and allowing him more control over the station..im hoping for once they allow the students to come in to program their own shows instead of sticking with the smooth sounds of the 1970's, man cannot live by loggins and messina alone.

If you'd like to send an email to the right people in support of getting RB back on the air, send 'em here:

Has anyone heard what they replaced RB with? Some guy (student?) who keeps chuckling at his own bad jokes. Pretty drastic change from hearing RB give the afternoon traffic and breaking news in an appropriate, serious tone with concise info. RB will be sorely missed. I'm all about giving students some valuable on-air time, but not during morning and afternoon drive. Maybe Dr Griffin wasn't so distanced from reality after all.

Yeah, because we wouldn't want STUDENTS to get air time on a student radio station.

Especially if that would interfere with Mike's little buddy RB getting air time... ::)

Sorely missed? More like shoulda happened years ago...

F-U, dude...I see you're back in your true form. Welcome back. ::) I guess it would only make sense to ME that a listener stuck in afternoon traffic would want to hear the traffic reports given in clear, concise terms...not with mistakes, guffaws, mispronounced streets, crap like "a wreck at the corner of 635 at LBJ Freeway," or with poor judgment (like giving construction items when there are more pressing incidents like accidents,) etc. Let the kiddoes play during post-AM drive and pre-PM drive, but put a seasoned pro on during the important times. Bass has proven for 22 years that he can handle that.

An even better solution get rid of ALL Dj's. Take a note from Jack FM NO Dj's and just play music. All I do when a DJ starts talking is change the station.

They're a non-profit, student radio station. their 'job' isn't to "get" listeners, their (KEOM's) job is to provide a training ground for student DJ's, their job is to provide a community channel for Mesquite HS sports, community interest activities, etc. Getting listeners is a fringe benefit to whatever else they do.

But If a listener wants traffic in a clear concise terms, they could listen to dozens of other stations in the metroplex. Gee dude, don't YOU do traffic? If I'm really interested in traffic, I can hear it on the 8's. But If I'm listening to KEOM, it's because I want to hear 70's music from a student radio station.

Why not let the "kiddoes" play ALL DAY. Let the best, most experienced, etc do AM or PM drive. Why let a 22 year vet have a spot on a student radio station?

If you're in favor of a "seasoned pro" working at KEOM, does the same hold true for KNTU, KTCU, etc? Why should college students at KNTU or KTCU get airtime in drive times, if there are seasoned pros looking for jobs? Or is it just high school students who suck enough that they need to be replaced by "seasoned pros"

I dont know anything about this station. It appears from this post that it is a STUDENT radio station. Now if this guy is such a seasoned pro why isnt he on a major station? I agree if I want to hear traffic reports there are a million choices to do it. Let the students have there air time. At least a student will bring something fresh to the air and not the same old stale crap seasoned Dj's bring. I think dj's have about 18 months worth of material. So every 18 months they rehash there schpeel.

These are some truly idiotic arguments about letting the students on the air all the time. Isn’t job one of a radio station – even a training ground like KEOM – to attract listeners? Job two then can be to train the 16- and 17-year olds how to read liner cards and not mispronounce local names, but try to do that without compromising job one.

Like most everybody else, I have some issues with RB. But one thing you cannot say about him is that he’s doesn’t (didn’t?) handle his duties in a totally professional manner. True, you can go to any of a dozen different stations to get your traffic or weather information, but when some poor schlub (who’s probably only taking the class for an easy elective grade) massacres a street name in drivetime it’s an embarrassment to the station and a quick punchout for the listener.

But let’s face it: most of the talk on KEOM is a punchout. Is there anyone, outside of family and friends, who listens to KEOM for anything but the music? Okay, I admit being fascinated by the cheesy PSAs and syndicated programs (a la “Hoof, Paw, Fin and Claw” or whatever it’s called), but whenever anyone cracks the mic I’m out. That includes Dr. James Griffin, whose voice makes fingernails on a chalkboard sound like Vivaldi.

Bring back RB. And why hasn’t he been on this board for so long?

If they're looking for some low-end syndie, I heard Dr. Demento is looking for a dallas radio home....

All joking aside, RB is a decent enough guy and has done well for over two decades, but maybe its time for him to move back and let the younger folks(those under 40) take a more active role in the training and handling of the station. Id like to see them with a format similar to KTCU, with more active roles for the students on nights and weekends throughout the broadcast year, both inside and outside of school. Not to mention MISD should be partnering up with DCCCD and cross-training people in their TV/Radio programs, as the last time I checked North Lake or Eastland didnt have their own broadcast tower.

Like I said, they need to partner up with DCCCD to cross use their facilities for training, maybe give some college kids who wouldnt have access to these types of resources normally the chance to learn and create their own programming.

What??? Dr. Demento a low end Syndi???

Ah.. I don't think so. He has over 30 + years in syndication. Longer than me!

And yes he'd love to be back on in Dallas.

I was joking about the Good Doctor, though I heard KLLI is looking for good programming ;)

Stations like KEOM teach students during the day. It makes sense to have professionals like Mr. Bass come in for the late afternoon and early evening hours. If I had a son or daughter in the program, I wouldn't want them hanging out at the station all by themselves until 7pm or later. Someone like Mr. Bass can do that without a problem. I hope they change their minds and put him back on the air.

RB is a really good guy, all im saying is that we have other folks join him as either adjunct staff to make sure the station stays on and also gives students the after-hours opportunity on weekends.

I agree and disagree on two things:

1) I disagree about only family and friends the only listeners. MANY busineses I run into have KEOM on in their stores. They not only enjoy the music and local news but can be safe in knowing they won't be playing music offensive to their customers.

Also there is a difference between a KNTU and a KEOM. KEOM is funded by MESQUITE TAXPAYERS!! KNTU is funded by students that pay to go to the school. I think the Tp's would be complaining highly if the students have a Goth show running or something else.

The dean at 5UV St Adeliade college in Australlia has a rule: Classical when school is in session and student programming on the weekends. Maybe a slight bend?

2) I agree that Dr. Griffin is not that great. He may be a great superindendent but a lousy Operations Manager. Too much ego me thinks! As we say in the business, we may have a face for radio but the good Dr. has a voice for small reel to reel tapes you send back to your family from your Naval post in Okinawa!

And BTW, Yea I'm a taxpayer! ::)
