WSHU and WCUM both on the CT South-west shoreline are using long wires. WSHU has an STA for theirs, but WCUM does not.

WCUM looks like a slant wire shunt feed, as there seems to be no insulator where the wire connects to the tower.

Shunt feeds still use the tower as a radiator. The slant wire is attached to the tower about 1/3 of the way up. This allows the base of the tower to be grounded. Most slant wire feeds are grandfathered; generally the FCC will not allow new ones because the slant wire affects the circularity of the signal (the slant wire does radiate). Instead, new installations use a three wire (or more) folded monopole configuration.

Here is an example of a six wire monopole feed: http://www.necrat.com/wfpb_proam.html
