Shhhh.... Be quiet. The children are sleeping. They've had a busy week.

For those of you keeping score at home and reading between the lines of certain posts on this board, this is one guy's opinion of what's happening now in the saga of Citadel vs. Johnny:

Old Kingston Pike is trying to settle down into some semblance of normalcy after Citadel Corporate played the 'screw the women and children, I'M GETTING ON THAT LIFE BOAT!' card.

New Kingston Pike is now standing in the window, waving its stick at passersby, and signaling a Hitkicker future for 94.3.

Expecting thoughtful opinion from most of the members on this board. Expecting a din of 'WHAARGAAARBLE!' or blessed silence from half a dozen of you. All comments welcome!

Yes, because we need more of that wonderful genre known as country music. As if radio here wasn't bad enough. I already spend 75% of my 'radio' listening time on Sirius, I guess there's room to grow.

94.3 does have a good signal and proven potential, however with all due respect it's a sideshow compared to what can happen with 100.3.

Well, boys, it looks like I'm the only smart-aleck on this board since Friday. Did the rest of you geniuses fly south for the winter or something?

Another country formatted station, hmmmm...Merle, 93.1, 850, 1040, 1140 and whoever else better check their boots! Maybe someone should grab True Oldies before someone wants it back?

I'll just leave this here....

Maybe New Kingston could figure out to get their automated breaks to fire correctly and be the correct length before they start a second format. Just sayin'. How many more country stations does this market need?

Come back fiveahead. I'll pretend to be Merle if you'll pretend to be my impending doom. Again.

I could be wrong, but isn't 94.3 The X considered a success? I haven't a clue what their revenue is, but I'm sure they must be #1 in males 18-34 (or at least #2 if WIVK dominates in that demo too). I find it hard to believe that ditching the only under-35 male leaning station and becoming the 4th FM country signal makes any sense at all... especially with less than 3,000 watts.

Too many talking heads/put out to pasture folks on this board. Local radio always wins. (When it has a decent signal)!

I am wondering if Knoxville area readio needs an intervention.

Looks like the other guys went on the wagon Friday. And I can quit any time I want. ::)

Today's Lessons--
Ratings, Country vs. others:
Add to that mix 730 (best classics, IMO), 1380 and 1400, and you get a whopping list of C&Ws. There is a wide, albeit incorrect, belief that Knoxburg is a "country radio town," based on WIVK's legendary success. But, if you add up all the country ratings, they fall far short of justifying the "country radio town" image.
Engineering:
A Class A at 500 ft. haat and 3,000 watts covers the exact amount of real estate as a Class A with a lower tower elevation and more power. To discuss FM coverage based on power alone is to admit a lack of knowledge. It is all spelled out in the Rules, for you who don't understand the relationship between haat and erp.
Advertising biz:
WNFZ would be stupid to go country (see "Ratings" above.) Not only would the country-loving advertisers ignore them, the listeners would consider them as interlopers, competing with "their" beloved WIVK.
Yes, 94.3 is a success, but I bet the Pirkles have bigger things in mind, perhaps some competiton for B-97.5, the one franchise format everyone has left alone since the beginning of time.
Finally, no one should fret about trying to bring down Citadel. From the decisions and actions they have made since coming to town, it is my guess that their empire will destroy itself from the inside.

The bottom line is revenue. Is 94.3 making decent money, relative to the size of it's signal and it's costs of operation? If yes, then the obvious smart move is to leave it alone.

If not, perhaps the next question should be "Could we make more money with Oldies/Classic Top 40?"

A locally-programmed Classic Top 40 would be nice. Not rock-based, since that's too close to WIMZ formatically. A station that plays the hits and isn't afraid to inject some personality and fun. I'm thinking along the lines of 105.7 The Hog.

There are two or three directions it could go. Rock, Urban or Country would the the usual suspects.

If it were me I would program the station with a Sports format and give Citadel another heart attack.

Good points BB!

There's a bunch of operators scrambling for a morsel from the classic country piece of the pie, the format on 93.1 does have some fancy jingles (star 102 style). The country format has it's place in every market, and here in East TN usually leads the pack due to the format's lack of fragmentation. But you rarely see two or more equally strong country stations in the same market, where it does happen you'll find a rocker, AC or Urban at the top of the ratings.

This just in!!

Due to the lack of classic country and country stations available in our market, WFIV 105.3, formerly the AAA formatted "i105", will now become "105.3 the Hayseed". All 5 former listeners of i105 (including owner and staff) are being redirected to purchase a used iPod on Craigslist.

That is all.

And all that time spend formulating their new "how to get ratings plan."

Well, it wasn't much of a plan. When PPM hit Knoxville they were going to hire some UT co-eds to drive around with the windows down on the station microbus and turn the station up at red lights.
