Should Love 105 be blown up?

I've always found it unusual that Minneapolis is the only large market without a full-power Adult Contemporary station. I can't name another Top 50 market (other than Puerto Rico) with no mainstream AC outlet. KSTP-FM is Hot AC while KTCZ is a mix of Modern AC and Adult Alternative.

WCCO-FM/WLTE tried for years to make AC work. It even commissioned TV ads with Teri Garr that were also used for Lite-FM in New York. But CBS Radio gave up and flipped it to 102.9 WMNB Country on Christmas Evening in 2011.

So now, the only AC in the Twin Cities is the three weak stations that simulcast Love 105's Soft AC format.
Sorry, in the 80's to the mid 2000's LTE was a cash cow and it had big numbers.
When the former GM at IHeart got blown out, when it was at CBS, his goal was to take on K102. This ended up being LTE, since the PD was instructed to tank FM 103.

Close circuit to the Cumulus brain wizards: it might be time to take Jay Philpott liners in the weekend automation.
It doesn’t sound like anyone is home over there. Station has sounded like a trainwreck since he was let go. Legal IDs are airing at random times now, Liners promoting Jay’s show are still running like you mentioned (I just heard one run two days ago), music going straight into the stopsets with no imaging in between, lots of dead air… the list goes on. In all honesty, the only reason I listen now is too laugh at how sloppy it sounds and sometimes the music. If I’m actually in the mood for good programming now, I listen to WDGY.

It might be the dumbest managerial move in the last 30 years. Yet that GM is in the HOF.

If it was so dumb, why didn't another broadcaster pick up the format? If AC was still a cash cow here, surely someone like 97.1, 96.3, etc. would have loved the extra revenue.

And 102.9 as a country station hasn't lit the market on fire, but Mick is long since retired, so why not blow it up? Could it be that there is more money in Country here than there was in AC, or really any other format that is left vacant?

Love 105 did pick it up and was doing some of the best ratings it had for a long time.
But Less-Cume corp was determined to run CBS Sports instead, thus killing it.
The was a time when AC was looked down upon, but it's doing very well in NYC, Chicago and LA to name a few.

97.1 main goal is to pull numbers form KS95, and 96.3 -- well they were what they were.

Yes. We need an Alternative and/or Classic Alternative Station in the Cities, since 93.3 switched to all-news.
The Current fills that void, along with Radio K for those who consider 89.3 too mainstream. 93.3 was unimpressive, and 96.3's run with the format, though it sounded decent, didn't do that well either.

Oh, I get that, but I don't know if those ratings turned into cash. It does seem like Love is going more mainstream AC lately, so we'll see if it moves the needle.

Point remains though, if it was such a cash cow, I'd think someone would have jumped on it by now. Hell, 96.3 was for sale for several years, I'm still shocked that Entercom or Hubbard didn't pick it up and throw AC on it (less so Hubbard as they may see it as competition to KS95, but Entercom/Audacy?)

Remember FM wise, the Twin Cities is an under radio market.
IHeart owning 5,
Hubbard -3,
LessCume 3/5 (Love 105 on three),
MPR 3
Audacy 3
I'm no listing the low power FMs
Mpls Education 1
University of Northwestern 1

The commercial have cut out their niches and counter programming.
At the time when Lite 103 was killed off, AC was looked down, and Hot AC was 'it' and no one was going to easily take on KS95.
Audacy's country is tanking at the moment, but they've got major problems corporate wise. They are Entercom, so they don't run the best ships.

Yeah, I think the Pohlads were asking too much for 96.3/95.3, and by the time they came down in price Audacy and Hubbard were dealing with other issues. Those are the two commercial broadcasters that could have picked up 96.3/95.3. Cumeless could pick them up if they divest Love 105, but the coverage of the 3 signals is better than the other two.

With AM radio leaving cars soon, they really HAVE to move 'CCO. There's actual money there. Put it on 102.9 before there's NO money.

And to answer mnradiofan, iHeart won't move 97.1 any closer to the music on 107.9, which is what a real AC would do.

Is anyone even working there anymore? John Tesh was moved to afternoons and Delilah added months ago, yet the promo liners still haven’t been updated. And not too long ago, Jay Philpott’s name was still coming up in the RDS, long after his firing. Don’t know if that changed, but wouldn’t surprise me. And just before the Christmas flip, they were still promoting their HD feed on KXXR, which hasn’t been running HD at least since summer. It’s turned into a Mickey Mouse operation.

I just read a post that they are dumping Bob & Sheri for Chris O’Connor in the morning slot.… I wonder if he’s the new person who is in charge of watching over Love?

Jeez…. Just flipped over to Love. Their processing sounds bad. Really bright and has lots of distortion like KQRS. That’s not good at all for a Soft AC / AC station. This new engineer SHOULD NOT be allowed access to any audio processing of any kind.
