Should Power 106 play more R&B yes or no?

Let me post my thoughts

Thats fine you can post anything you want but you keep bringing up the same stuff we already talked about and gave you answers too. When you get a little older and get more involved in the industry you will understand how this market works
 
If Power 106 won't play certain R&B songs it is what it is. Like I said before they are very picky over R&B songs. They should play more house music though. My bus ride home was Turnt up thanks to Power 106. I love the new sound of Power 106.

Power 106 should be doing exactly what they're doing. They are consistently 2nd or 3rd to KIIS in Persons 18-34 and 18-49. Why would they change.
 
Power 106 will always appeal to me because I'm apart of their target age. I've been out of the Power range for quite sometime. I've should've been listening to Power 106 on the regular like a normal teenager. Power 106 is playing some hot songs such as Back Seat by New Boyz Featuring Dev that's a hot new track for the L.A. streets. Everybody's right Gangsta Rap in L.A. is a thing of the past. If I'm in the mood for some ol' skool I'll turn to KDAY or listen to my iPhone but 9 times out of 10 I will listen to Power 106. Power 106 makes my mornings and afternoons fun. Downloading the Power 106 app was worth it. Reality struck me. The Beat is not coming back, KJLH is boring as heck except for the 4-8pm daypart Power 106 will always be my station to listening to after a long brutal day.

Funny...i thought I would always listen to Power too. But, like everyone else in here, we got older, and moved on to other stations. Remember BJordan...Todays Music, are tomorrows Oldies! Didn't someone use that as a jingle?
 
KDAY and KJLH are owned by small owners so the PD's which are Andre and A.D. have a bit more freedom. KPWR is owned by Emmis which is a major radio company that is having issues right now. The PD of Power has to answer to a higher demand and most of it comes from corporate and sales. Appealing to a new generation of music will keep the money rolling espically in this town. Im sure people at KPWR are aware of the changes with the music but its still mainly somewhat Hip Hop leaning 80% when you tune in. So there is nothing wrong with KPWR. And Emmis could care less about what songs are in rotation. As long as its making its billing every year.
 
After reading all these posts I must chime in. Power 106 was the best during its first 5 or 6 years. The music/jocks/presentation made it a truly fun and enjoyable station to listen to. It was a whole concept, and then there were the exclusive POWERMIXES, clubmixes, all the way down to the way the station specially-edited even the normal edits!

I've seen people on here brag about having all these tapes and whatnot but are selfish and refuse to share them and that's a shame. Nevertheless, my passion for finding classic Power 106 audio and memorbilia will never die. It's a fun hobby!!!
 
Another good song Power 106 is playing is I Need A Doctor by Dr. Dre & Emeniem. Dre has been a hugs staple around Power 106 since the Chronic album came out in 1992. Shoot The Beat played Dre's records on the regular too. I'm loving I Need A Doctor. If The Beat was still around today it would play I Need A Doctor.
 
I found out that Power 106 used to play Before I Let You Go by Blackstreet from 1994-95. That song is too slow for the Power demo too. Don't get me wrong I love that song but Power 106 was playing that? Too sappy. Yes I know that they were going against 92.3 The Beat but Power 106 known for playing Hip Hop not sappy R&B ballads.
 
I remember Power playing "when a man loves a woman" by Michael Bolton when that song was new. Probably the most shocking flashback from power I can think of.
 
I have one that tops that...Bryan Adams Everything I Do I Do It For You when they were still Dance Now! I was interning there at the time and thinking, "Okay, they're done." They switched to LA's Hottest Music about a month later.

I doubt people are selfish here but it might be becasue some of us dont own a tape player anymore... LOL like me ill post them when I can ;)

Now that I went back to the Power 106 demo I'm starting to think that slow sappy romantic R&B won't fit with the format. They're better off playing uptempo R&B and Dance and Hip Hop. They had LA's Hottest in like 1988 to 1992. Then switched to LA's Party Station in the mid 90's when they migrated to Hip Hop & R&B and started playing that sappy BlackSTREET hit called Before I Let You Go in 94. The last time I heard Before I Let You Go on L.A. radio was on KDAY during it's The Beat phase in August 2008. I'm sorry but I can't see them playing slow jams. I could see them playing Usher but not BlackStreet in the 90's. I'm thinking wow Power 106 was that urban in the 90's. In 1997-1998 they would play Dru Hill In My Bed Remix, Total What About Us and Somethin For The People My Love Is The SHHH! and Mya It's All About Me featuring Sisqo but it was more Hip Hop. While on KKBT you would the same hits but more R&B.

You might not have the full understanding of the "urban contemporary" format. It might sound "too sappy" but the composition of that format is "R&B, soul, and hip-hop songs that appealed to both genders within the 18-49 demographic" and usually it is heavily dayparted as well. Mainstream urban format would be a format where it would seem more out of place.
 
@Kilamanjero That was in the 90's. But now in 2011 it won't fly on Power 106. All those songs I've mentioned from 1997-98 were getting mad spins on 92.3 The Beat as well. But 92.3 The Beat at that time played more R&B such as Jon B. They Don't Know, Kelly Price Friend Of Mine, Brandy & Monica The Boy Is Mine Usher Nice & Slow and Next Too Close as well as Butta Love & I Still Love You.

I already know this. ;) What I'm saying is your assumption that certain R&B song(s) were "too sappy" was incorrect about the format of that time. It was not because Power 106 (just like the Beat) was charting as an urban contemporary on the BDS back in the 1990s.
